Description (EN):

HazArctic –project approaches environmental problems and risks of geo-bio hazards in the Arctic Region. It will study areal extension, mechanism and risk for oxidation of environments which can produce hazardously acid substances, both in man-made mining areas and potentially hazardous sulfur bearing Litorina clay sediments. Also the role of microbes in the geo-bio interaction in possible hazardous environments will be studied. In addition, studies related to the mine environments, for example stability of closed and open mines and mine tailings reuse, will be carried out. Project will also focus on training and analyzing of best practices

Achievements (EN):

WP 1: Overall understanding of acid sulfate soils (AS) and their classification among the partners has improved due to the research done in the project. The classification of AS soils has been harmonized among the Scandinavian geological surveys, which will enable future comparison of collected AS soil data in each country. WP 2: This work package suffered probebly most of the unexpected situations during the project duration. Two mine excursions were carried out, and appropriate reports and workshops were held. WP 3: This study has improved our understanding of the huge diversity and complexity of the microbial communities related to acid sulfate soils and the processes driven by them. Bacterial community structure was analyzed from the DNA of a total of 211 soil samples collected from Finland, Sweden and Norway in co-operation with the WP1’s studies. Impacts of the project: Partners of the project will utilize the outputs in their own future projects and disseminate the new knowledge and lessons learnt. There will be some scientific publications published during 2022 of WP1 and WP3 work. The data from these WPs has already been submitted to GTK, SGU and European nucleotide archive databases from where it will be in use for researchers around the world. The acid sulphate soil distribution data is available as a map service to the public and it can be used for example in the municipalises land use planning and decision-making processes. The data script written during the project will be in use of SGU, NGU and GTK researchers. For WP3 this was the first step of studying microbiology in the acid sulphate soils. More research is required. There will be publications later 2022 and that will hopefully start the conversations in the scientific community of microbiology.
