Wind energy is key for NWE to meet the Paris Agreements. NWE’s extended coastlines provide huge potential. But today’s wind turbines encounter limitations, both on-shore (space, public acceptance) and off-shore (space, water depth). SMEs in NWE are strongly positioned to develop a novel alternative that addresses these issues: Airborne Wind Energy Systems (AWES), aircraft tethered to compact ground-based generators. With AWES, new locations for wind energy can be unlocked (incl. floating offshore, rural onshore). Energy is harvested efficiently, reducing materials, foundations and carbon footprint, while lower visual impact can ease public acceptance. MegaAWE brings utility-scale AWES ("MW-AWES") closer to the market, readying SMEs for its roll-out in NWE and beyond. It shall achieve this by: - endurance demonstration, to improve investability and secure interest of utilities - demonstration of key enabling modules at MW-scale, to derisk planning of commercial prototype demo - an execution plan for MW-AWES commercial prototype demo, to ensure relevant innovation focus (incl. site & user requirements, design guidelines, system sizing & costing), validated by regions & users. MegaAWE investment/outputs address the recommendations of the EU-commissioned 2018 Ecorys study on AWES: - AWES test hub in Mayo, IE - Precommercial AWES architecture demonstrated at 150kW in on-field pilot - Three key enabling AWES modules at >1MW, demonstrated in-lab - “MegaAWE” Platform, supporting MW-AWES development and future roll-out, matching needs & opportunities of regions & users with solutions of developers. MegaAWE shall raise MW-AWES from TRL5 to 7, strengthen innovation capacity of 11 SMEs and secure supply chain & investment towards the next step, commercial demonstration. By 2033, 50 AWES installed (150MW capacity) could then provide RE to 150.000 additional households in NWE.

Windenergie ist für NWE unerlässlich, um die Ziele des Pariser Abkommens zu erfüllen. NWE’s ausgedehnte Küsten bergen großes Potential. Heutige Windräder stoßen jedoch an ihre Grenzen, sowohl an Land (Flächen, Akzeptanz), als auch auf See (Flächen, Wassertiefe). KMU in NWE sind gut aufgestellt, um eine neue Alternative zu entwickeln, die diese Probleme löst: Airborne Wind Energy Systeme (AWES) sind Flugzeuge, die über ein Seil Generatoren am Boden antreiben. AWES erschließen neue Standorte (floating Offshore und an Land) und hat positiven Effekt auf Rohstoffverbrauch, CO2-Austoß, Landschaftsbild und Akzeptanz in der Energieerzeugung. MegaAWE bringt AWES im Megawatt-Bereich (MW-AWES) näher zum Markt und bereitet KMU auf die Verbreitung der Technologie in NWE und darüber hinaus vor, mittels: - Einem Dauerversuch, um die Investierbarkeit und das Interesse von EVU zu sichern - Demonstration der Schlüsseltechnologien für MW-AWES, um das Planungsrisiko kommerzieller Demonstratoren zu senken - Ein Ausführungsplan für die Demonstration kommerzieller MW-AWES, um Innovationsfokuses durch Regionen & Nutzer zu validieren (inkl. Park- und Nutzeranforderungen, Kosten, Richtlininen). MegaAWE Investments/Outputs setzt die Empfehlungen der Ecorys Studie (2018) der EU-Kommission zu AWES: - AWES Testzentrum in Mayo, IE - Vor-kommerzielle 150kW AWES-Architektur im Feldversuch demonstriert - 3 KET für AWES module >1MW, im Labor demonstriert - “MegaAWE” Platform, die die Entwicklung von MW-AWES und zukünftige Verbreitung unterstützt und Anforderungen & Chancen von Regionen & Nutzern mit den Lösungen der Entwickler zusammenführt. MegaAWE soll MW-AWES von TRL5 nach 7 bringen, Innovationskraft von 11 KMU stärken und die Lieferkette und Investitionen für die kommerzielle Demo sichern. 2033 könnten 50 AWES (Kapazität: 150MW) installiert sein, um 150.000 Haushalte in NWE mit EE-Strom zu versorgen.

L'éolien est essentiel à l'ENO afin de respecter les accords de Paris, mais fait face à des limites, à terre et en mer (espace, acceptation, profondeur). Les PME de l'ENO sont idéalement placées pour proposer l'alternative "AWES": systèmes éoliens aéroportés, des aéronefs encordés à des générateurs au sol, donneraient accès à des ressources inexploitées (sites flottants, zones rurales), tout en réduisant matériaux, fondations, empreinte carbone, mais aussi impact visuel. MegaAWE est une étape clé vers la maturité des AWES à l'échelle du megawatt ("MW-AWES"), préparant les PME à sa mise en service au sein de l’ENO, avec les objectifs suivants : - Démonstration d'endurance, pour renforcer l’intérêt des investisseurs & opérateurs - Validation des technologies sous-jacentes à l’échelle du MW, pour lever les risques liés au développement d’un démonstrateur commercial - Plan d’exécution d’une démonstration commerciale de MW-AWES, validé par régions & opérateurs, pour garantir la pertinence des innovations (exigences du site & opérationnelles, dimensionnement du système, calcul de coût). Investissement/réalisations de MegaAWE répondent aux recommandations de l'étude Ecorys (2018) commandée par l'UE: - Plate-forme d'essai AWES, comté de Mayo, IE - Architecture AWES pré-commerciale validée par un projet pilote (150kW) - Trois technologies sous-jacentes validées à l’échelle du MW (laboratoire) - Groupe de travail "MegaAWE", sur le développement et le déploiement de MW-AWES, liant besoins & opportunités des régions & opérateurs et solutions des PME MegaAWE devrait accroître de 5 à 7 le TRL des MW-AWES, renforcer les capacités R&D de 11 PME et garantir chaîne d'approvisionnement & investissements pour la démonstration commerciale. En 2033, 50 AWES (150 MW au total) pourront alimenter 150.000 foyers de l’ENO en énergies renouvables.
