ISSUE: Packaging waste generated in Europe is estimated at 87 mil.mt/y. For biobased packaging, such as bioplastic PLA, industrial composting is often used. However, when plastic is composted the non-biodegradable, synthetic colorants are released, many of which contain toxic components that cumulate in the environment. In paper recycling these colorants end up in wastewater. CHANGE: The few biodegradable colorants available do not meet the quality criteria for applications in paper and plastic, hence the industry has no choice. Curcumin, a yellow natural colorant, is used in food and pharma. Wider use is hindered mainly due to the poor UV stability. Recent research shows possibility to improve stability and generate other colors (red, blue) based on curcumin. CURCOL demonstrates: ECONOMIC POTENTIAL by identifying supply chains from regionally grown plants to biobased colorants in packaging. TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY in 3 pilots addressing colorant production and application in packaging. MARKET by identifying barriers and business cases and developing introduction actions. OUTPUTS: 3 application pilots for colorants. 5 bioproducts with the novel colorants, tailored to the market specifications, supported by Life-Cycle (LCA) and Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA). Guidelines and business plan for greenhouse production of curcuma crop developed. Regulation/market aspects are reviewed in TEA. LONG TERM EFFECTS: CURCOL aims to valorise biobased colorants in biodegradable packaging, introduce a new high value crop in the greenhouse industry and identify new supply chains resulting to 100-150 jobs and economic growth 25M€/y in 5 years after the project. New knowledge and transnational partnerships will support the change to the circular economy. CURCOL focuses in packaging, however use in a range of applications e.g. textile and cosmetics is possible.

PROBLEMSTELLUNG: Jährlich fallen in Europa schätzungsweise 87 Mio.t Verpackungsmüll an. Biobasiertes (Nahrungsmittel-)Verpackungsmaterial, wie z.B. PLA, wird häufig industriell kompostiert. Hierdurch werden biologisch nicht abbaubare, fossilbasierte Farbstoffe freigesetzt, die oft toxische Bestandteile enthalten, die sich in der Umwelt anreichern. LÖSUNGSANSATZ: Die wenigen verfügbaren bioabbaubaren Farbstoffe erfüllen nicht die Qualitätsanforderungen für Papier und Plastik und sind daher nicht industriell einsetzbar. In der Nahrungsmittel- und Pharmaindustrie wird der natürliche gelbe, Farbstoff Kurkumin genutzt. Eine weitergehende Nutzung scheitert an der schlechten UV-Stabilität. Jüngste Forschungsergebnisse zeigen jedoch, dass eine bessere Stabilität erreicht und auch andere Farben (Rot, Blau) aus Kurkumin erzeugt werden können. CURCOL 1) zeigt das ÖKONOMISCHE POTENTIAL durch Identifizierung von Wertschöpfungsketten für biobasierte Farbstoffe für Verpackungen auf; 2) demonstriert die TECHNISCHE MACHBARKEIT in 3 Farbstoff-Pilotproduktionen sowie in Anwendungen in Bioplastik und Papierverpackungen; 3) identifiziert Hemmnisse für die VERMARKTUNG und entwickelt Geschäfts- und Aktionspläne. ERWARTETE ERGEBNISSE: 3 Pilotproduktionen für Farbstoffe; 5 Bioprodukte mit den neu entwickelten Farbstoffen, die an die Spezifikationen der Abnehmer mithilfe von Ökobilanzen und techno-ökonomischen Analysen angepasst werden; Anleitungen und Geschäftspläne für die Gewächshausproduktion der Kurkumapflanze. LANGZEITEFFEKTE: Das Projekt zielt auf Inwertsetzung biobasierter Farbstoffe in bioabbaubaren Verpackungen, die Einführung einer hochwertigen Pflanze in Gewächshausproduktion und die Identifizierung von Wertschöpfungsketten, die 100-150 Arbeitsplätze und ein ökonomisches Wachstum von 25M€/a liefern, ab. Zwar fokussiert CURCOL auf Verpackungen, doch sind auch Anwendungen in anderen Bereichen, wie z.B. Textilien und Kosmetika, möglich.

PROBLEME: Les déchets d’emballage générés en Europe à 87mil.m³/an. En ce qui concerne les matériaux d’emballage bio-sourcés, tels que le PLA, le compostage industriel est considéré comme une forme effective de recyclage. Néanmoins, lors du compostage, des non-biodégradables,synthétique colorants sont libérés, de nombreux contiennent des composants toxiques qui cumulent dans l’environnement. CHANGEMENT: étant donné que les colorants biodégradables disponibles ne répondent pas aux critères pour les applications, l’industrie n’a pas le choix. La curcumine, un colorant naturel, est utilisée dans l’alimentation et la pharmaceutique. Son application plus étendue est surtout entravée par la pauvre stabilité aux UV. Des études récentes ont démontré qu’il est possible d’améliorer la stabilité ainsi que de générer d’autres couleurs (rouge,bleu). CURCOL démontrera: LE POTENTIEL ÉCONOMIQUE des nouvelles filières prometteuses de biocolorants pour des applications d’emballage. LA FAISABILITÉ TECHNIQUE par le biais l’application dans l’emballage.LE MARCHÉ: développant des actions d’introduction et business cases. RESULTATS: 3 séries de pilotes optimisant des colorants. 5 bioproduits aux nouveaux colorants selon les spécifications des commerciales, un plan d’affaires pour la culture de curcumine en serre; une analyse relatives à la régulation/ commercialisation. A LONG TERME: Le projet a pour but de de valoriser l’utilisation de colorants bio-sourcés dans des emballages, d’introduire une nouvelle culture avec une grande plus-value dans l’industrie de production en serre résultant en la création d’au 100 à150 d’emplois et en une croissance économique (25M€/an). Des connaissances et partenariats nouveaux soutiendront la transition vers une économie circulaire. CURCOL se concentre sur l’emballage, mais son utilisation par exemple le textile est possible.

Expected Outputs (EN): No biobased colorants meeting the packaging requirements exist. Natural curcumin color is too unstable. On a lab-scale more stable curcumin-based colors are demonstrated (TRL4-5). Use in biopackaging 0%. No curcuma production in NWE-region.
