Description (EN): The bear and the wolf of the Pyrenees are part of the natural heritage of Spain, France and Andorra. The protection of both species is regulated by the Directive 2006/105/CE of the Council dated on 20 November 2006. During the last decade, both species have been independently monitored by countries, which complicates the implementation of common plans for their conservation.
The main objective is to create an integrated and standardised plan for monitoring and tracking Pyrenean bear and wolf populations. The added value of carrying out the project in a cross-border manner means that the plan will be continuous. Only cross-border collaboration to harmonise collected and analysed data will enable us to achieve this objective.
For each species, the following actions will be performed:
1) Standardise sample collection (hairs, faeces, urine).
2) Develop and unify common tools for obtaining genetic and ecological data.
3) Build a common database among countries.
4) Develop strategies for protection, conservation and improvement of the species.
5) Encourage the establishment of common mediation measures, which transcend borders, and encourage species integration into a human activity territory.
6) Report species situation in the Pyrenees through seminars, magazines, website and social networks.
Read more Description (ES): El oso y el lobo de los Pirineos son parte del patrimonio natural de España, Francia y Andorra. La protección de ambas especies está regulada por la Directiva 2006/105/CE del Consejo del 20 de noviembre de 2006. Durante la última década, el seguimiento de ambas especies se ha realizado de forma independiente entre países dificultando la implementación de acciones para su conservación.
El objetivo principal consiste en crear un plan integrado y estandarizado para la monitorización y seguimiento de las poblaciones de oso y lobo de los Pirineos, con el valor añadido de ser un plan continuo. Sólo una colaboración transfronteriza para armonizar los datos recogidos y analizados nos permitirá alcanzar dicho objetivo.
Para cada especie se realizarán las siguientes acciones:
1) Estandarizar la metodología de recogida de muestras (pelos, heces, orina).
2) Desarrollar y unificar herramientas comunes para la obtención de datos genéticos y ecológicos.
3) Construir una base de datos común entre países.
4) Desarrollar estrategias para la protección, conservación y mejora de la especie.
5) Favorecer la aparición de medidas de mediación comunes, que trascienden las fronteras, y fomentar la integración de la especie en un territorio marcado por la actividad humana.
6) Informar sobre la situación de la especie en los Pirineos mediante seminarios, revistas, web y redes sociales.

La protection de ces deux populations est encadrée par la Directive Européenne 2006/105/CE datée du 20 novembre 2006. Au cours de la dernière décennie, le suivi de ces deux espèces est réalisé de façon indépendante entre pays, ce qui complique la mise en œuvre d’actions pour leur conservation.
L'objectif principal consiste à créer un plan intégré et standardisé pour la surveillance et le suivi des populations d’ours et de loup sur tous les Pyrénées, avec la valeur ajoutée d'être un plan continu. Seule une collaboration transfrontalière pour harmoniser les données recueillies et analysées nous permettra d'atteindre cet objectif.
Pour chaque espèce sont projetées les actions suivantes:
1) Standardiser la méthodologie de collecte des échantillons (poils, fèces, urine).
2) Développer et unifier des outils communs pour obtenir des données génétiques et écologiques.
3) Construire une base de données commune entre pays.
4) Elaborer des stratégies de protection, conservation et amélioration de l’espèce.

Read more Achievements (EN): The LoupO project has identified a minimum of 70 bears and 8 wolves since 2019 in the Pyrenees. The European program concludes, which has strengthened cross-border collaboration and has developed a plan for the monitoring and follow-up of the populations of bear (Ursus arctos) and wolf (Canis lupus) in the Franco-Spanish Pyrenees and in the Principat d’Andorra The main objective of the LoupO project has been to develop a cross-border plan for the monitoring and follow-up, especially genetic, of bear and wolf populations in the Pyrenees, two species that are part of the natural heritage of Spain, France and Andorra. Both species show transboundary
distributions: the bear with a breeding population in the Central Pyrenees (Haute Garonne, Arièje, Val d'Aran and Pallars) and the wolf, through the presence of some erratic males settled in the PrePyrenees and Eastern Pyrenees.
Since the beginning of the project, more than 500 non-invasive samples (hair, feces, urine in snow) have been collected to identify the bears and wolves of the Pyrenees. The genetic and ecological data (obtained from cameras, observations, location of wild and domestic fauna prey) have allowed to identify a minimum of 70 different bears for the entire Pyrenees and a minimum of 4 wolves only on the Catalan slope. The presence of some isolated individuals has also been detected both in Aragon and in the French Pyrenees. All this information is collected in a database that has been created jointly between the different partners.
The project, with a total budget of 1,250,109 euros, has been co-financed at 65% by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through the INTERREG V-A Spain-France-Andorra Program (POCTEFA 2014-2020), a European territorial cooperation program created to promote the sustainable development of the border territory between the three countries. During the two and a half years that the project has lasted, coordinated by the researcher Natalia Sastre of the Department of Animal and Food Science of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the LoupO project has had as beneficiary partners the Cos d'Agents Rurals, of the Department of the Interior (GENCAT), the Conselh Generau d'Aran, Forestal Catalana S.A., le Laboratoire d'Ecologie Alpine (CNRS), and as associated partners, the Departament d'Acció Climàtica, Alimentació i Agenda Rural (GENCAT), l'Office Français de la Biodiversité, the Direction Régionale de l'Environnement, de l'Aménagement et du Logement (Occitanie), the Government of Aragon and the Ministeri de Medi Ambient, Agricultura i Sostenibilitat (Govern d'Andorra).
