Description (EN):

Due to the very high density of population in the coastal belt, numbers of urbanized coastal areas are today exposed to risks induced by extreme marine events. This is especially the case for the French-Spanish Basque and Catalan coasts, which are regularly hit by intense storms. Moreover, this risk exposure tends to increase due to the global warming, which results in both an increase in mean water level and an intensification of extreme meteorological events. In this context, the MAIN OBJECTIVE of MARLIT project is to improve knowledge and tools to better understand the impacts of nowadays and future storms on the shore, with the aim of supporting coastal risks management by public administrations. MAIN RESULTS of MARLIT will be: -the production a large database gathering detailed local information about storm impacts, using INNOVATIVE monitoring and modelling technologies -a NEW capitalization on historical storm events to support protection, monitoring and prediction actions led by public administrations -an UNPRECEDENTED evaluation of the future evolution of coastal risks at the local scale -the identification and assessment of INNOVATIVE mitigation countermeasures to reduce the onshore impact of ocean storms.

La franja costera es una zona altamente poblada por lo que actualmente, muchas zonas urbanas están expuestas a los riesgos asociados a episodios marítimos extremos. Este es el caso de la costa vasca franco-española y la costa catalana, las cuales se encuentran sometidas a grandes temporales de manera habitual. Además, esta exposición al riesgo tiene una tendencia a aumentar bajo los efectos del calentamiento global, principalmente por el aumento del nivel medio del mar y de los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos. En este contexto, el objetivo principal del proyecto MARLIT es mejorar el conocimiento y las herramientas para comprender los impactos de las tormentas actuales y futuras en la costa, con el fin de apoyar la gestión del riesgo costero por parte de las administraciones públicas. Los PRINCIPALES RESULTADOS DE MARLIT serán: -la generación de una amplia gama de información local sobre los impactos de las tormentas, utilizando NOVEDOSOS sistemas de vigilancia y modelización - una NUEVA capitalización de los eventos históricos de tormentas para apoyar las acciones de protección, el seguimiento y la prevención a través de las políticas públicas - una evaluación INÉDITA de la evolución futura de los riesgos costeros locales -la investigación y evaluación de medios INNOVADORES para mitigar los impactos de las tormentas en el litoral.

Du fait de la très forte occupation de la bande côtière, de nombreux littoraux urbanisés sont aujourd’hui exposés aux risques liés aux épisodes maritimes extrêmes. C’est le cas des côtes franco-espagnoles basque et catalane, régulièrement exposées aux tempêtes. De plus, cette exposition au risque tend à s’intensifier sous les effets du réchauffement climatique, qui engendre conjointement une montée du niveau moyen de la mer et une intensification des évènements météorologiques extrêmes. Dans ce contexte, le projet MARLIT a pour OBJECTIF PRINCIPAL d’améliorer les connaissances et les outils permettant d’appréhender les impacts des tempêtes actuelles et futures sur le littoral, afin de soutenir la gestion des risques côtiers par les administrations publiques. Les PRINCIPAUX RESULTATS de MARLIT seront -la génération d’une large gamme d’informations locales sur les impacts des tempêtes, à l’aide de NOUVEAUX systèmes transfrontaliers de monitoring et de modélisation -une capitalisation NOUVELLE sur les épisodes de tempête historiques pour soutenir les actions de protection, de surveillance et de prévention menées par les politiques publiques -une évaluation INEDITE de l’évolution future des risques côtiers locaux sous l’effet du changement climatique et -la recherche et l’évaluation de moyens INNOVANTS d’atténuation des impacts des tempêtes sur le littoral.
