Description (EN):

Opaque PET waste, a plastic material increasingly present in plastic packaging, is difficult to revalorize. It disturbs the PET sorting and recycling value chain, for which it constitutes a threat that has led to a growing awareness among the general public and environmental associations. The RevalPET project has developed a methodology for the recycling of opaque PET, and showed that in order to develop high added value applications for this recycled material, there is a need to stabilize and improve its quality. The RevalPET'UP project aims to address this challenge by using the reactive extrusion process. This upgraded opaque PET will then be transformed by blending with other materials, to target applications requiring good mechanical performance, or in foams for building insulation. RevalPET'UP will go as far as the production of materials on a pilot-plant scale, the production of prototypes for the measurement of insulation performance, and the study of the commercial potential of the materials developed. The plastics packaging recycling sector will thus be able to develop new outlets with high added value and long service life. The building materials sector will also be able to develop a sector using recycled materials to replace currently imported insulation materials.

El PET opaco se utiliza cada vez más en la fabricación de diversos tipos de envase plásticos. Sus residuos son difíciles de valorizar, perturban el sector económico de reciclado del PET y constituyen una amenaza percibida por el público en general y las asociaciones medioambientales. El proyecto RevalPET ha permitido desarrollar una metodología de reciclado del PET opaco y demostrar que para desarrollar aplicaciones de alto valor añadido para este material reciclado, es necesario estabilizar y mejorar la calidad del material base tras su recuperación. El proyecto RevalPET'UP propone afrontar este reto utilizando el proceso de extrusión reactiva. El PET opaco reciclado así mejorado se utilizará para el mezclado con otros plásticos con el objetivo de mejorar sus propiedades mecánicas o se transformará en espumas para el ailamiento de edificios. El proyecto RevalPET'UP llegará hasta la producción de materiales a escala piloto, la realización de prototipos para la medición del rendimiento de aislamiento y el estudio del potencial comercial de los materiales desarrollados. El sector del reciclado de envases plásticos podrá así desarrollar productos innovadores de alto valor añadido y larga vida útil. La industria de materiales para construcción también podrá desarrollar la utilización de materiales reciclados para sustituir los materiales aislantes que se importan actualmente.

Les déchets de PET opaque, matériau plastique de plus en plus présent dans les emballages plastiques, sont difficiles à valoriser. Ils perturbent la filière de tri et de recyclage du PET, pour laquelle ils constituent une menace ayant conduit à une prise de conscience du grand public et des associations environnementales. Le projet RevalPET a permis de développer une méthodologie de recyclage du PET opaque, et de montrer que pour développer pour développer des applications à haute valeur ajoutée pour cette matière recyclée, il est nécessaire de stabiliser et d’améliorer la qualité du matériau de base à l'issue de son recyclage. Le projet RevalPET’UP se propose de relever ce défi en utilisant le procédé d’extrusion réactive. Ce PET opaque recyclé ainsi amélioré sera ensuite transformé soit en mélange avec d’autres matériaux, pour viser des applications nécessitant de bonnes performances mécaniques, ou sous forme de mousse pour l’isolation des bâtiments. RevalPET’UP ira jusqu’à la production de matériaux à l’échelle pilote, la réalisation de prototypes pour la mesure des performances d’isolation, et l’étude du potentiel commercial des matériaux développés. Le secteur du recyclage des emballages plastiques pourra ainsi développer des débouchés inédits à haute valeur ajoutée et longue durée de vie. Le secteur des matériaux de construction pourra également développer une filière utilisant des matériaux recyclés pour substituer des matériaux d’isolation actuellement importés.
