Il progetto FAST si propone di combattere l’introduzione, la naturalizzazione e la diffusione delle specie aliene invasive che arrecano danno alla biodiversità, fenomeno che assume particolare rilevanza in zone transfrontaliere, per la maggiore facilità d’interscambio, e che richiede azioni tempestive ed urgenti. Le attività verranno effettuate all’interno di siti che presentano ambienti terrestri e acquatici con elevato carattere transfrontaliero. Sono stati individuati quattro siti siciliani della Rete Natura 2000, (Riserva naturale Foce del Fiume Simeto e Lago Gornalunga, Riserva naturale Fiume Fiumefreddo, Riserva naturale Foce del Fiume Irminio e Riserva naturale Vallata del Fiume Ippari) e tre siti maltesi ( L-Inħawi tal-Buskett u tal-Girgenti, L-Inħawi tax-Xlendi u tal-Wied tal-Kantra, Il-Magħluq tal-Baħar ta' Marsaskala). FAST procederà con il riconoscimento delle specie aliene invasive e la loro classificazione in scale di priorità, il loro contenimento e/o eradicazione e l’individuazione e la gestione dei pathways (soprattutto i transfrontalieri bidirezionali) e dei veicoli di introduzione e diffusione. Saranno quindi elaborate delle linee guida e adottate delle best practice. La creazione di un sito web dedicato e di programmi di comunicazione ambientale garantiranno la massima diffusione dei risultati raggiunti. Il progetto FAST contribuirà ad arrestare la perdita di biodiversità delle specie autoctone in aree protette delle due isole, mediante l’individuazione, il monitoraggio e il contenimento delle specie aliene invasive, e l’attuazione di azioni di ripristino efficaci.

Description (EN):

The FAST project aims to combat the introduction, naturalization and spread of invasive alien species that harm biodiversity, a phenomenon that is particularly important in cross-borderareas, for the greater ease of interchange, and which requires timely and urgent action. The activities will be carried out within sites with terrestrial and aquatic environments with a high cross-border character. Four Sicilian sites of the Natura 2000Network have been identified (Riserva naturale Foce del Fiume Simeto and Lago Gornalunga, Riserva naturale Fiume Fiumefreddo, Riserva naturale Foce del Fiume Irminio e Riserva naturale Vallata del Fiume Ippari) and three Maltese sites (L-Inħawi tal-Buskett u tal-Girgenti, L-Inħawi tax-Xlendi u tal-Wied tal-Kantra, Il-Magħluq tal-Baħar ta' Marsaskala). FAST will proceed with the recognition of invasive alien species and their classification into priority scales, their containment and/or eradication and the identification and management of pathways (especially two-way cross-border) and introduction and diffusion vehicles. Guidelines will then be drawn up and best practices adopted. The creation of a dedicated website and communication plans on environment will ensure the maximum dissemination of the results achieved. The FAST project will help to halt the loss of biodiversity of indigenous species in protected areas on the two islands, through the monitoring and conservation of invasive alien species, and the implementation of effective restoration actions.

Expected Results (IT):

0.5 kmq di superficie di aree sottoposte ad azioni di intercettazioni IAS (Invasive Alien Species), loro contenimento e recupero della biodiversità terrestre delle due isole in 4 siti Natura 2000 in Sicilia e 3 a Malta; 1.000 cittadini/fruitori formati e sensibilizzati sui temi ambientali e coinvolti nelle azioni di monitoraggio; 20 stakeholders, tecnici e ricercatori partner istituzionali specificamente formati per la gestione in rete delle IAS.

Expected Results (EN):

0.5 sq. km of surface areas subject to IAS (Invasive Alien Species) interception actions, their containment and recovery of the terrestrial biodiversity of the two islands in 4 Natura 2000 sites in Sicily and 3 in Malta; 1,000 citizens/users trained and made aware of environmental issues and involved in monitoring actions; 20 stakeholders, technicians and researchers institutional partners specifically trained for the network management of IAS.

Expected Outputs (IT):

Le attività di progetto individueranno: n. ≤10 IAS catalogate e caratterizzate; n. 30 individuazione IAS a rischio introduzione; n. 15 IAS monitorate nelle aree protette; n. 10 specie target minacciate e definizione delle varie tipologie di interventi di ripristino; n. 4 IAS contenute/eradicate; n. 10 partecipanti ad incontri di sensibilizzazione, formazione e work esperience. Le attività di progetto realizzeranno 14 interventi di ripristino ambientale in aree precedentemente affette da IAS

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project activities will identify: n. ≤10 Invasive Alien Species (IAS)catalogued and characterized; n. 30 IAS at risk introduction; n. 15 IAS monitored in protected areas; n. 10 threatened target species and definition of the various types of restoration interventions; n. 4 target species of IAS eradicate/contained; The project activities will carry out 14 environment restoration interventions in areas previously affected by IAS.
