Description (IT): Il progetto SEA MARVEL mira ad aumentare la consapevolezza dei rischi dell’ecosistema marino e mitigare gli effetti dell’inquinamento da plastiche, dello sfruttamento delle risorse marine, dell’invasione delle specie aliene e gli effetti dei cambiamenti climatici in maniera da mantenere e riattivare l’ecosistema marino ed i siti protetti di Natura 2000. La valutazione della biodiversità nel mare Italo-Maltese è cruciale per comprendere al meglio l'incidenza dei cambiamenti climatici e ambientali nel Mediterraneo. Verrà svolto un lavoro sul campo che valuterà la presenza e distribuzione di specie-indicatori vulnerabili, specie aliene e rifiuti plastici nei siti Natura 2000 selezionati (AMP Isole Ciclopi, AMP Isole Pelagie, AMP Capo Milazzo e RNO Foce Simeto in Sicilia - Ghar Lapsi and Filfla Area e l’area attorno all’isola di Gozo a Malta). Gli interventi del progetto daranno la possibilità di sviluppare esperienze dirette, sotto forma di competizioni tra le nuove generazioni, azioni partecipate per le comunità costiere per lo sviluppo di piani di gestione sostenibili, e l’avvio del servizio "Sentinelle del Mare": il monitoraggio con i naviganti, applicando la "Citizen Science". I gestori dei siti Natura 2000, le Ong ambientaliste, i pescatori artigianali professionali, i Comuni, i Ministeri dell'ambiente e dell'istruzione saranno supportati, per migliorare il loro impatto sui siti Natura 2000, riducendo la perdita di biodiversità con attrezzature e dispositivi innovativi, diffondendo conoscenza e consapevolezza tra visitatori e popolazione limitrofa. SEA MARVEL intende contribuire ad arrestare la perdita di biodiversità marina nell'area transfrontaliera migliorando l'efficacia dei siti Natura 2000, la consapevolezza e la conoscenza dei portatori di interesse sulla vita marina preziosa e versatile che necessita di conservazione attraverso la partecipazione a comportamenti più responsabili e la mitigazione di gravi impatti da plastica e specie aliene
Read more Description (EN): The SEA MARVEL project aims to raise awareness of the risks of the marine ecosystem and mitigate the effects of plastic pollution, exploitation of marine resources, invasion of alien species and the effects of climate change in order to maintain and reactivate the marine ecosystem and Natura 2000 protected sites. The assessment of biodiversity in the Italian-Maltese Sea is crucial to better understand the impact of climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean. Field work will be carried out that will evaluate the presence and distribution of vulnerable indicator species, alien species and plastic waste at the selected Natura 2000 sites (AMP Cyclops Islands, AMP Pelagie Islands, AMP Capo Milazzo and RNO Foce Simeto in Sicily - Ghar Lapsi and Filfla Area and the area around the island of Gozo in Malta). The project's interventions will give the opportunity to develop direct experiences, in the form of competitions between the new generations, participatory actions for coastal communities for the development of sustainable management plans, and the launch of the "Sea Sentinels” service: monitoring with sailors, applying Citizen Science. The managers of Natura 2000 sites, environmental NGOs, professional artisanal anglers, municipalities, ministries of the environment and education will be supported, to improve their impact on Natura 2000 sites, reducing the loss of biodiversity with innovative equipment and devices, spreading knowledge and awareness among visitors and the neighbouring population. SEA MARVEL aims to help halt the loss of marine biodiversity in the cross-border area by improving the effectiveness of Natura 2000 sites, the awareness and knowledge of stakeholders about the precious and versatile marine life that needs conservation through participation in more responsible behaviour and the mitigation of serious impacts from plastic and alien species.

Expected Results (IT): 42.49 kmq di superfice di aree e siti marini protetti che sviluppano azioni congiunte per la protezione della biodiversità; 7.500 persone, tra popolazione locale e visitatori di siti di Natura 2000, rese consapevoli degli aspetti di ricchezza e fragilità della biodiversità; 3 Comunità target (pescatori, marinai ed equipaggi di traghetti) sensibilizzate su migliori servizi e azioni di partecipazione, come il servizio di Sentinella del Mare

- 10 progetti di sensibilizzazione disseminati nelle scuole con il supporto delle OMG selezionate, degli studenti formati e dei partner associati;- 3 sfide organizzate per coinvolgere le scuole e creare, a livello transfrontaliero, un senso comune di appartenenza e cura delle risorse marine come bene comune;- 6 toolkits educativi condivisi tra Malta and Sicilia;
- 6 interventi per diminuire la quantità dei detriti di plastica con il posizionamento di “cestini marini” nei siti Natura 2000 selezionati;
- 15 Scuole che adottano un protocollo “plastic free” a livello transfrontaliero per ridurre l’uso delle plastiche;
- 50 pescherecci equipaggiati per “servire” come Sentinelle del Mare;
- 3 equipaggi di traghetto formati per diventare Sentinelle del Mare;
- 50 equipaggi di barche a vela sensibilizzati per diventare Sentinelle del Mare durante le regate

- 15 Schools adopting a "plastic free" protocol at cross-border level to reduce the use of plastics;
- 50 vessels equipped to "serve" as Sentinels of the Sea;
- 3 ferry crews trained to become Sentinels of the Sea;
- 50 sailboat crews sensitized to become Sea Sentinels during regattas
