Description
Description (EN): Over the past years, smart grids have been placed very high at the European Union's agenda. At the beginning, this field was specific in its introduction, since it required concrete and realistic system solutions. Today, with the extensive development of technologies, these initial barriers are overcome. Experts in this field are unanimous that smart grids represent the entire future development of the electric power system. Smart grid concepts cover all areas, from the planning, operation, maintenance of the grid on one side and on the other side from production, transmission, distribution and end-use. In other words, smart grids are presenting the normal network development. There are no more specifics and new innovative technologies are starting to be used across all segments of the network. Even though the technology is ready, the Danube region is still in the early stages of the actual deployment of smart distribution systems. In this process, regions and local communities across the Danube area lack knowledge and capacities for the integration of smart grid concepts into regional and local policies, which is essential in the further development of Smart Villages, Smart Cities or Smart Regions.
The STRIDE project aims to provide through knowledge transfer and development of planning tools, a comprehensive support for regional/local policy makers for the improvement of energy planning. Within the project carried out regional analyses, developed strategies, action plans and other tools (methodologies, guidebook, platform) will enable and accelerate the integration of smart grid concepts into regional and local policies. Furthermore, the Methodology for regional analysis, the Guidebook and the Platform will be designed in a way that allows the use and application throughout the entire Danube region and therefore the outcomes of the project will represent a high replication value.
Read more Achievements (EN): For the past two years, the STRIDE project provided, through knowledge transfer and development of planning tools, a comprehensive support for regional and local policy makers for the improvement of energy planning. Within the project, regional partners carried out regional analyses and developed strategies, action plans, methodologies, a guidebook and a networking platform to enable and accelerate the integration of smart grid concepts into regional and local policies.
FREE SMART GRIDS TRAINING MATERIALS:
Open-source training materials that have been developed within the Interreg Danube STRIDE project are now freely available to members of the STRIDE Smart Energy Platform. The STRIDE training materials were piloted across Slovenia, Germany, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegovina and provide public officers and other relevant target groups with knowledge on energy planning in order to build capacity for the future smart grid policy developments on the local, regional and national level. Topics of the STRIDE trainings range from smart grid motivations to smart grid strategies and energy policies at the local, regional, national and EU levels.
REMOVING BARRIERS TO RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS IN CROATIA: On 30th June 2022, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development published the document
"Assessment with recommendations for removing obstacles and easing administrative procedures that limit greater use of energy from renewable sources". Considering the
analysis presented in the document, it is necessary to ensure the implementation of ten measures that will ensure the acceleration of the preparation and implementation of projects for the development of renewable energy sources in the Republic of Croatia. Most of the measures relate to the activities of the competent institutions, given that the insufficient capacity of the institutions and the frequent changes in the energy legislative framework at the level of the EU and in the Republic of Croatia.
STRIDE SMART ENERGY PLATFORM: The STRIDE Web Platform is live and available to all project members and publicly to all interested parties. The STRIDE “Danube Smart Energy Platform” serves as a network of experts, policy makers, and other stakeholders from all target groups and therefore build capacity for the STRIDE project. The open-source platform is well-stocked with training materials, good practices, reports, and more for all interested and partners, involving members from the whole Danube Region. The platform allows members to exchange ideas, experiences, and knowledge of the STRIDE project topics and share them with the public.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to contribute to energy security and energy efficiency (survey based composite indicator)
Expected Outputs (EN): The main results of the STRIDE project are developed and integrated smart grid (SG) strategies and action plans at a regional/local level with a joint collaboration of participating Danube regions. In order to assure the integration of SG strategies at different levels, the key actors have to collaborate with each other in order to exchange know how and their experiences and requirements for a better energy planning. In this term, the project will directly include triple helix actors and other relevant stakeholders into the development of SG strategies and action plans, which will enable the integration of different aspects, needs, capacities and knowledge in order to produce comprehensive and coherent outputs.
The process of developing strategies will go one step further as it will require intensive cooperation of key actors of the whole programme area as the whole Danube region is facing similar problems in terms of integration of SG concepts at a regional/local level. As described before, the Danube region lacks knowledge and capacities for the integration of SG concepts at regional/local level. That’s why there exists a strong need for joint solutions for the whole area and this will be assured trough a transnational and holistic Guidebook intended for the support of policy makers and energy planners as well as with a user-friendly platform. The Danube Smart Energy Platform will not connect only participating regions with the topic of smart grids, but will cover the entire Danube region by offering space for a much wider field of smart and innovative energy solutions, covering also the heat production with a focus on smart distribution and energy production from RES. The Platform will be focusing on all aspects of energy with the aim to create a network of experts, policy makers and all relevant stakeholders willing to cooperate in order to create policies on smart energy and accelerate their implemnatation at regional and local levels.
