Description (EN):

The project will develop sustainable transport with improved access to 3 border crossings (Kelebija - Tompa, Bački Vinogradi - Ásotthalom and Horgoš – Röszke) through construction of bicycle paths in Subotica and Tompa. The project aims continue with simplifying and accelerating the transport by vehicle and bicycle which with the aim to remove bottlenecks at border crossings. The main objective will be achieved by construction of the bicycle paths from both sides, Hungary (493,34 m) and Serbia (1.5 km). The project is the 2nd phase of the same project (Opti-Bike) that is successfully being implemented in the framework of the Programme and builds on the results of the first phase. Namely, the 2nd phase will construct some of the bicycle roads that were designed in the 1st phase. Opti-Bike 2 intends to continue with optimization of traffic in the border zone as construction of bicycle paths will give an opportunity to those who use bicycles as means of transport as well as recreational activity, to approach and quickly cross the border from both sides. Also the development of the new bicycle paths will ensure safe biking across the border and the environmental protection (reduce the CO2 emission). For a long time, during the holidays and periods of vacations at some border crossings there were rows of vehicles of several kilometers long. During such periods, the average waiting time at the border crossing was to several hours, and the conditions of the traffic at the border crossings have traffic characteristics at bottlenecks. Such situations create traffic inconvenience to tourists and the local population, prolong the journey, causing additional travel costs, impact on environmental pollution and road safety. By improving the use of sustainable transport modes, the project will positively affect on bottlenecks at the border crossings and reduce the waiting time. Opti-Bike 2 will achieve a direct benefit to the border regions local residents, tourists and others.
