Description (EN):

Patients with blood cancer have to present themselves frequently at the clinic to have blood tests taken. The frequent trips to the hospital are a heavy burden for the patients and their relatives. HomeHemo will investigate the possibilities for a Danish-German collaboration in developing a whole new method for patients to do blood tests themselves. Our hope is, that these patients in the future will be able to do their blood tests from home. This way, it will be possible to determine with more precision than today, if a patient needs to show up at the clinic or not. This would spare them unnecessary trips to the hospital and give a higher quality of life – as well as contribute to a more efficient use of the resources at the hospitals. This Danish-German network project will create results and a collaboration, which future cancer research and innovation projects can build on.

Patienten mit Blutkrebserkrankungen müssen häufig für Bluttests ins Krankenhaus. Die häufigen Reisen zum Krankenhaus sind dabei eine grosse Belastung für die Patienten und ihre Angehörigen. HomeHemo soll die Möglichkeiten einer Dänisch-Deutschen Zusammenarbeit bei der Entwicklung einer neuen Vorgehensweise untersuchen, durch die Patienten selbst Bluttest (in erster Linie Blutbilder) durchführen können. Unsere Hoffnung ist, dass die Patienten in naher Zukunft von zu Hause aus selbst ihren Bluttest durchführen können. Dadurch kann genauer festgestellt werden, ob eine Krankenhausbehandlung notwendig ist oder nicht. So können die Patienten sich verzichtbare Reisen zum Krankenhaus sparen und erhöhte Lebesqualität haben – aber auch zu einer besseren Ausnutzung der Ressourcen im Krankenhaus beitragen. Dieses Dänisch-Deutschen Netzwerkprojekt wird Ergebniss und eine Zusammenarbeit hervorbringen, auf dem zukünftige Krebsforschungs- und Innovationsprojekte aufbauen können.

Patienter med blodsygdomme skal ofte på sygehuset for at få taget blodprøver. De hyppige transporter til sygehuset er en stor belastning for patienterne og deres pårørende. HomeHemo vil afsøge mulighederne for et dansk-tysk samarbejde omkring udvikling af en hel ny metode til at patienter kan tage blodtest selv. Vores håb er, at patienterne i fremtiden selv kan tage deres blodtest hjemmefra. Derved vil man mere præcist kunne afgøre, om fremmøde på sygehuset er nødvendig eller ej. Det vil kunne spare unødvendige ture på sygehuset for patienterne og give højere livskvaliet – samt bidrage til en mere effektiv udnyttelse af ressourcer på sygehuset. Dette dansk-tysk netværksprojekt vil skabe resultater og et samarbejde, som vi i fremtidige kræftforsknings- og innovationsprojekter kan bygge videre på.

Achievements (EN):

RESULTS: • Training of parents in the self-control of blood values in large and small children with leukemia in the paediatric hospital of Kiel University Hospital. • Training adult blood cancer patients in self-control of their blood values at the Hematology Unit of the Seeland University Hospital in Roskilde. • Qualitative interviews with patients and relatives in Germany and Denmark about their experiences with self-testing. • Check the measurement accuracy of the blood test device at very low blood values, if the test is performed by the patients themselves.

Expected Results (EN):

The overall objective of HomeHemo is to improve diagnostics and treatment for blood cancer patients, which will result in a higher quality of life for the patients and their relatives, as well as it contributes to a more cost efficient public health care system. The aim of HomeHemo is to clarifiy the prerequisite to enable child and adult hematological patients to do blood tests themselves in their own home in the future, and thereby reduce their high frequency of hospital visits. The main outcomes of the HomeHemo network projekt will be: Studies: - Validity test of POCT (Point of Care Test) devices for blood tests for child and adult hematological patients, especially with focus on the validity in patients with extremly low blood counts and therefore high risk of infections (this validity test is different from the tests in CCC because breast cancer patients don´t the same very low blood counts). - Feasibility tests on a specific number of child and adult patients with blood cancer. Here the focus is to develop and test a method of teaching patients and relatives to do the blood tests themselves. For adult hematological patients using blood from the catheter that most patients already have as a consequence of their medical treatment (this approch is different from the use of capilar blood from the patients finger i CCC). For pediatric patients is to determine, from what age capilar blood test can be made and what alternatives can be found for smaller children (in CCC there are no experiences with blood tests for children). Network: - Establishing a new crossboarder network for Danish-German collaboration in the field of cancer treatment and innovation.
