Description (EN):

The INNsieme project is working to ensure that the Inn is once again the lifeline of the Inn Valley in 2030 — for humans, plants and animals. By 2030, there are again routes that are in good condition and the guide species of the river and the floodplains are sufficiently suitable habitats. Existing protection concepts are combined into a cross-border mission statement and a species conservation plan from the source to the mouth of the Inn, and individual pilot measures are implemented during the project period. Accompanying environmental education and communication activities increase the understanding and acceptance of species conservation measures among local populations and local communities. In doing so, the project contributes directly to the mission of the EU macro-regional strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) to strengthen the Alps as a habitat for people and nature by balancing protection and exploitation interests. It is based on the specific objectives of Action Group 7 (enhancing ecological and social benefits of ecological continuity, halting biodiversity losses) as well as the Action Group 6-Subgroup III (integrated water restoration, identification of win-win strategies for the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive and Flood Protection Directive). The protection and restoration of river basin-typical habitats takes into account the EU Water Framework Directive as well as the Habitats and Birds Directives. All the challenges typical of Alpine rivers also occur at the Inn. This, as well as its cross-border progress, makes it an ideal model flow to test recommendations from regional strategies (see above) or from previous projects in practice and later transfer them to other relevant river systems.

Das Projekt INNsieme arbeitet darauf hin, dass der Inn im Jahr 2030 wieder die Lebensader des Inntals ist – für Menschen, Pflanzen und Tiere. 2030 gibt es wieder Strecken, die einen guten Zustand aufweisen und die Leitarten des Flusses und der Auen finden ausreichend geeignete Lebensräume vor. Bestehende Schutzkonzepte werden zu einem grenzüberschreitenden Leitbild und einem Artenschutzplan von der Quelle bis zur Mündung des Inn zusammengefasst, einzelne Pilotmaßnahmen daraus in der Projektlaufzeit umgesetzt. Begleitende Aktivitäten der Umweltbildung und Kommunikation erhöhen das Verständnis und die Akzeptanz für Artenschutzmaßnahmen bei der lokalen Bevölkerung und Anrainergemeinden. Damit trägt das Projekt direkt zur Mission der makroregionalen EU-Strategie für den Alpenraum (EUSALP) bei, die Alpen als Lebensraum für Mensch und Natur zu stärken, indem Schutz- und Nutzungsinteressen ausgeglichen berücksichtigt werden. Es beruht auf den Spezifischen Zielen der Action Group 7 (ökologische und soziale Nutzen von ökologischer Durchgängigkeit stärken, Biodiversitätsverluste stoppen) ebenso wie der Action Group 6-Subgroup III (integrierte Renaturierung von Gewässern, Identifizierung von win-win-Strategien für die Umsetzung von EU-Wasserrahmenrichtlinie und Hochwasserschutz-Richtlinie). Durch den Schutz und die Wiederherstellung von flussraumtypischen Habitaten wird der EU-Wasserrahmenrichtlinie ebenso Rechnung getragen wie der Habitat- und der Vogelschutzrichtlinie. Alle für Alpenflüsse typischen Herausforderungen treten auch am Inn auf. Dies sowie sein grenzüberschreitender Verlauf machen ihn zu einem idealen Modellfluss, um Empfehlungen aus den regionalen Strategien (s.o.) oder aus früheren Projekten in der Praxis zu testen und später auf andere relevante Flusssysteme zu übertragen.

Achievements (EN):

Species protection and environmental education at the Inn from the source to the mouth: Animal and plant species migrating along the Inn do not stop at country borders, so their condition cannot be improved by selective measures alone. Through the cross-border network of coordinated measures – be it in the area of habitat and species conservation or environmental education and communication – along the entire river course, this project has achieved cross-border added value. The “Action Plan for Species Protection for the Inn” has also been developed as a central project result. This includes for the first time a holistic mission statement for the Inn, as well as numerous suitable recommendations for action, which are intended to alleviate already existing negative influences on the Alpine river and to improve the living conditions for flora and fauna. “Only eight percent of the waterway of the Inn is considered to be close to nature and only 30 percent of the side streams are connected to the Inn without any interruption. Thanks to the INNsieme project, there is once again hope for recovery for endangered species, such as for grayling, river runners or German Tamariske.” – Project Manager Gerhard Egger from WWF.
