The role forests play in environmental protection has increased significantly over the past decades, thus the EU lays great emphasis on protecting forests, biodiversity and soil (vid. EU Forestry Strategy & AP). Protecting forests’ ecosystem presents an increasingly serious challenge for the 2 forestries, as the climate change causes a significant problem in the field of forest management. E.g.: winters becoming milder and precipitation patterns more extremist year by year, thus soil water balance and microclimates are changing, and forest zones sometimes are shifting. Consequently many invasive species have appeared in the project area, which are more resistant to circumstances (e.g.: the lack of rainfall). As a new tendency, native species die off as their habitats are steadily declining. Among the native species, the most affected and most sensitive one is the English Oak, with significant natural and economic values. (10 thousand m3 E. Oak registered to die off in the Forestry of Koska per year). In addition to the lack of water it is a great new problem that invasive species drown native species in this habitat. There are more than 150ha of infected areas in the cross-border area, but unfortunately there are no large-scale technologies to clear-away these species. The overall aim is to stop deforestation described above. For this purpose, we must reveal the background of infections, and elaborate new comprehensive methods to foster the survival of native species and preserve soil fertility. These activities can be separated into two main fields, which must be implemented simultaneously: 1)Implementation and installation of a joint groundwater monitoring system in order to model the movement of groundwater exactly. As USP Nasice has 20 years of experience in this field, they will coordinate this activity and give professional guidance. This means the installation and maintenance of 38+5 new and 17 existing monitoring wells and piezometers and 2+5 weather stations in the project area. In the framework of the project the Croatian partner is going to draw up a study based on data regarding groundwater movements. The English-language documentation is going to be public, so all stakeholders can access it on the project website. Moreover, the collected groundwater data are going to be available on a public WebGIS database, thus they will be usable for scientific aims (e.g.: University of Pécs, University of Zagreb; Forest Research Institute etc.) and for other authorities too (DDVIZIG; H. Voda) as well as farmers too. The long-term sustainability and importance of the joint system is that Partners want to implement own water governance management tasks collaboration with authorities after this project period. 2)Suppressing invasive species in Natura2000 areas: by surveying invasive plant species (with LB coordination). Finally the two forestries are going to launch a pilot project (especially in Hungarian part) in the interest of clearing away all non-native vegetation. The main goal is to protect the habitat of native species (e.g. E.Oak, ash...) taking into account the environmental regulations. Developing a mobile App is part of this activity. It provides opportunity for the users to notify foresters about invasive species or other issues, furthermore they can receive information about protected nature values (plants, birds, insects).The App also allows the users to access these values through forest roads, forest facilities at the Forestry of Nasice & Mecsekerdő Finally, the project redounds protection of native species and the original ecosystem on an area of almost 155,17ha, thanks to the joint monitoring system and the clearing. Moreover, the 2 international methods (best practice) are a good opportunity to disseminate our achievements.

Achievements (EN):

The most important part of the project "Protectin of the English oak in the crossborder area", the acronym "Oak protection" is an ecological study. The 146 pages of text, tables, figures and diagrams scientifically deal with the state of forest and aquatic ecosystems of the Koska forestry with recommendations for management adaptation in climate changes. The study was created by experts from contracted companys Perceptives and Biota with the help of experts from the Faculty of Forestry, University of Zagreb and the employees of the Forest Administation Branch Našice. For the purpose of the study, fieldwork was carried out, which included investigating the structure of stands on the test plots, determining the growth of pedunculate oaks, analyzing the features of forest soils, and field research on the status of aquatic ecosystems. Data on forest stands and performed forest work were taken from the Croatian Forests database, and data on LiDAR imaging were processed, which was performed twice for the study area: in April 2018 and in April 2019. During the preparation of the Study, the planned coverage in the Koška Forestry area was extended to a part of the Donji Miholjac Forestry Area, which is also part of the FAB Našice. Additional work included stand analysis as well as processing of LiDAR imaging of the area for the purpose of determining potential locations for the implementation of hydropower measures. These analyzes have identified several key problems that foresters are already facing in the management of English oak stands both in the investigated area of Donji Miholjac and Koška forestry areas, as well as throughout its whole area in Croatia. The study elaborates measures for the adaptive management of oak stands in the medium-term period of time to increase the resistance of the oak stands at the upcoming climate change. In particular, this refers to defining potential locations for implementing so-called hydro-adaptive adaptive measures to reduce hydrological extremes in terms of climate change.
