Ecological revitalization of Boros-Dráva and Aljmaski rit branches to renew aquatic habitats, increase biodiversity and fishing tourism possibilities

Description (EN):

The Aljmaški rit area, covering a surface of 2.616 ha, is located between the settlements Nemetin and Aljmaš on the right bank of the Drava River in the farthest north-east of Slavonia, i.e. the Republic of Croatia. Its present appearance resulted from cutting of the Drava and Danube meanders at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Since then, the Drava cut its river bed along this area due to the performed river regulation works, whereas the cut river arms gradually filled with sediment during the Drava and Danube floods, including organic sediment. Boros-Drava river branch is located in the floodplain of Drava river, in Baranya county on the administrative area of the village Old. The Lanka canal transports water to Lake Boros and then into the Drava. The river branch is divided in half by the Hungarian-Croatian borderline. The branch is part of Natura 2000 ecological network and the Duna-Drava National Park. According to the results of multidisciplinary investigations and studies for both areas, Aljmaski rit and Boros Drava, which showed that they were greatly eutrophicated and that the ecological balance is exceptionally deteriorated, implementation of certain activities on restoration and conservation of the subject floodplain areas are necessity. These activities are targeting to achieve overall objective of the project which is to restore and preserve biodiversity of important indigenous and other habitats in these highly sensitive environmental areas of NATURA 2000 at the national, regional and global levels with implementation of hydrotechnical works and measures on River Drava floodplains which improves cross-border cooperation on establishing sustainable environment in both countries in same way. Target groups are DDVÍZIG, Duna-Drava National Park Directorate, Hrvatske vode and Public institution Agency for the Management of Protected Natural Values ??in the area of ??Osijek-Baranya County, local population, civil organizations, local students, anglers, tourists, public entity Hrvatske šume and so on. The overall implementation of the project activities will provide coherent involvement of partners from both countries. Cross-border cooperation will be increased though joint approach to the revitalization of aquatic ecosystems in both countries, as well as improving the water conditions and benefit the local community. After finishing the project there will be approximately 4.0 hectares on Croatian side of the border and 3.2 hectares on Hungarian side of the border of better conservation status of aquatic and wetland habitats. This revitalization will open a wide selection of choices for all target groups. Even if one target group decides to give up from usage of selected area, it can be easily repurposed for any type of usage. Special attention will be reflected on the local population in order to develop ecological agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing, hunting and tourism. The successful project will be a good example on how to harmonize human activities with the conservation of habitats and species. Project will increase reuse of the locations and improve the quality of life of the local communities in both countries and raise the level of environmental awareness by organizing awareness rising event. With identification of mutual development interests of the area it contributes to laying the foundations of the growth of mutual relationship between responsible institutions as a prerequisite of further joint activitie.

Achievements (EN):

The aim of the project was to enhance the Boros-Drava oxbow’s ecological status on the Hungarian side and the Aljmaski rit’s ecological status on the Croatian side by dredging the sediment full of organic materials. In both aquatic habitats the eutrophication process had been in a well-advanced condition. On the Hungarian side the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate dredged 50 000 m3 sediment from the bottom of the Boros-Drava oxbow which is situated closed to the settlement called Old. Beyond the above-described project activities, new fishing piers were installed at Boros-Drava and native fish species (carp, pike, tench) were released to enhance the touristic attractiveness of the area. On Croatian side on the so-called Aljmaski rit aquatic habitat 4 hectares wetland and on Hungarian side 3.2 hectares got better conservation status by the sediment removal. Due to these works the water flow is better ensured in these aquatic habitats and thus their ecological status is expected to increase on the long run. This will be envisaged by a newly established eco-monitoring system.
