The development of new therapies for psychiatric and neurological diseases is one of the biggest challenges for the world of basic, industrial and clinical research. However, the lack of dialogue between these different actors has led to the abandonment of certain areas of research and development. Neurex, which has bundled neuroscience research on the Upper Rhine over the last 2 decades, proposes to create a project that integrates all actors in the drug development chain. The development of this project requires: 1. a realignment of industrial dynamics towards the identification of therapeutic targets through strong interactions with researchers, 2. the training of healthcare professionals for innovative therapeutic applications, 3. a retroactive evaluation of the models proposed by researchers by clinicians. The aim of this project is to create knowledge transfers between all members of the chain. In order to achieve this objective, several actions will be carried out, including expert meetings in which the various stakeholders (basic research, industrial and clinical research) exchange their expertise. This knowledge transfer is complemented by a partnership with univ. Technology transfer platforms and with biotechs & laboratories on the Upper Rhine. A general public sector should help inform the Rhine population about the functioning of the brain.

Le développement de nouvelles thérapies contre les troubles psychiatriques & neurologiques constitue l’un des défis majeurs pour le monde de la recherche fondamentale, industrielle & clinique. Or, l’insuffisance du dialogue entre ces différents acteurs a conduit à l’abandon de certains axes de recherche & développement. Neurex, qui a fédéré au sein du Rhin Supérieur la recherche en neurosciences au cours des 2 dernières décennies, propose de créer un projet intégrant tous les acteurs de la chaine du développement de médicaments. Le dévelopement de ce projet requiert : 1. un recentrage de la dynamique industrielle sur l’identification de cibles thérapeutiques grâce à des interactions fortes avec les chercheurs, 2. la formation des professionnels de santé sur les applications thérapeutiques innovantes 3. une évaluation rétroactive par les cliniciens des modèles proposés par les chercheurs. L’ambition de ce projet est de créer une véritable chaine de transfert de savoirs entre tous les maillons de la chaine. Plusieurs actions viseront à assurer cet objectif et notamment des ateliers dans lesquels les différents protagonistes (recherche fondamentale, industrielle & clinique) échangeront leur expertise. Ce transfert de savoirs sera complété grâce à un partenariat avec les plates-formes universitaires de transfert de technologie et avec des biotechs & laboratoires du Rhin Supérieur. Un volet grand public contribuera à informer la population rhénane sur les mystères du cerveau.

Die Entwicklung neuer Therapien für psychiatrische & neurologische Erkrankungen ist eine der größten Herausforderungen für die Welt der Grundlagen-, Industrie- und klinischen Forschung. Der fehlende Dialog zwischen diesen verschiedenen Akteuren hat jedoch dazu geführt, dass bestimmte Forschungs- u. Entwicklungsbereiche aufgegeben wurden. Neurex, das die neurowissenschaftliche Forschung am Oberrhein in den letzten 2 Jahrzehnten gebündelt hat, schlägt vor, ein Projekt zu schaffen, das alle Akteure in der Arzneimittelentwicklungskette integriert. Die Entwicklung dieses Projekts erfordert: 1. eine Neuausrichtung der industriellen Dynamik auf die Identifizierung therapeutischer Ziele durch starke Interaktionen mit Forschern, 2. die Ausbildung von medizinischem Fachpersonal für innovative therapeutische Anwendungen, 3. eine rückwirkende Bewertung der von Forschern vorgeschlagenen Modelle durch Kliniker. Ziel dieses Projekts ist es, Wissenstransfers zw. allen Gliedern der Kette zu schaffen. Zur Erreichung dieses Ziels werden mehrere Maßnahmen durchgeführt, darunter Fachgruppentagungen, in denen die verschiedenen Interessengruppen (Grundlagenforschung, industrielle & klinische Forschung) ihr Fachwissen austauschen. Ergänzt wird dieser Wissenstransfer durch eine Partnerschaft mit univ. Technologietransferplattformen und mit Biotechs & Labors am Oberrhein. Ein allgemeiner öffentlicher Bereich soll dazu beitragen, die Rheinbevölkerung über die Funktionsweisen des Gehirns zu informieren.

Achievements (EN):

Following two decades of financial support by Eltem and then the transborder Interreg programs, the review of Neurex activities is quite remarkable. Hundreds of scientific meetings and workshops, controversy debates and lab tours have contributed in the training of junior and senior researchers of the Universities of Basel (CH), Freiburg i.Br. (D) and Strasbourg (F). The creation of a website and a newsletter further participated in reinforcing interactions between French, German and Swiss teams. Bridges were built between fundamental and clinical research by involving clinicians in Neurex activities, while large pharmas or smaller companies interested in neuroscience joined us, broadening the range of themes addressed in our trainings. Further actions have marked out our road such as support to start ups, to publications or for supporting junior PIs coming back from abroad in order to set up their research team in the Upper Rhine Valley. All of this was possible thanks to the involvement of the scientific board and administrative team who wrote this story out of the successive Interreg chapters dedicated to specific aims. The middle of 2023 marks the end of the Interreg projects. The network is entering a fund-raising phase, which is necessary for its survival and, more generally, for the maintenance of the wonderful trinational dynamic that has been the neuroscience field for over 20 years. There are still many challenges ahead, and we hope to succeed. Whatever the outcome, we would like to thank all those who have contributed, often on a voluntary basis, to the dynamism and success of our network.
