The energy storage system is the weak point of electric vehicles: very expensive, limited range, slow to charge and needs special protection. Today the main driver of progress is undoubtedly the development of energy storage systems that offer solutions to improve range, lifespan or total cost of ownership (TCO). "A promising solution proposed by scientific researchers is the hybridization of energy carriers. On the one hand, a high energy density technology as the main source and on the other hand, a high-specification power technology as a secondary source. This hybridization makes it possible to take advantage of the two storage components and gives degrees of freedom the design of the system. The VEHICLE project focuses on the development of intelligent energy management strategies based on advanced algorithms. From a typical vehicle based on a hybrid source (Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors) coupled to an advanced synchronous reluctance machine, multiphysics models are developed using a holistic approach and evaluation tools. This allows energy flows to be optimized, which improves the service life of the battery and thus the TCO.

Le système de stockage d’énergie utilisé dans les véhicules électriques reste le maillon faible : très coûteux, limité en autonomie, lent à la recharge, et fragile. Aujourd’hui, l’axe principal de progrès est sans nul doute basé sur le développement de systèmes de stockage d’énergie apportant des solutions pour l’amélioration de l’autonomie, de la durée de vie, ou encore le TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Pour ce faire, une solution prometteuse proposée par les chercheurs est l'hybridation des sources d'énergie. L'objectif particulier de cette solution est de combiner deux technologies de stockage complémentaires : une technologie de haute énergie spécifique pour la source principale et une technologie de haute puissance spécifique en appui. Cette hybridation permet d'exploiter les avantages des deux composants de stockage et permet une plus grande liberté dans la conception du système. Le projet VEHICLE se focalisera sur le développement de stratégies de gestion intelligentes basées sur des algorithmes avancés. Plus précisément, à partir d’un véhicule type basé sur une source hybride (batteries li-ion & supercondensateurs) couplée à une machine synchrone à réluctance variable, des modèles multi-physiques seront élaborés avec une approche holistique et des outils d’évaluation qui permettront d'optimiser les flux énergétiques et de prolonger la durée de vie de la batterie et son TCO.

Das Energiespeichersystem ist die Schwachstelle von Elektrofahrzeugen: sehr teuer, limitiert die Reichweite, langsam aufladbar und Bedarf gesonderten Schutz. Heute ist der Haupttreiber des Fortschritts zweifellos die Entwicklung von Energiespeichersystemen, welche Lösungen zur Verbesserung der Reichweite, Lebensdauer oder der Gesamtbetriebskosten (TCO) bieten. Eine vielversprechende Lösung, die von wissenschaftlichen Forschern vorgeschlagen wird, ist die Hybridisierung von Energieträgern. Einerseits eine Technologie mit hoher Energiedichte als Hauptquelle und andererseits eine hochspezifische Leistungstechnologie als Nebenquelle. Diese Hybridisierung ermöglicht es, die Vorteile der beiden Speicherkomponenten zu nutzen und gibt Freiheitsgrade bei der Gestaltung des Systems. Im Projekt VEHICLE wird auf die Entwicklung von intelligenten Energiemanagementstrategien konzentriet, die auf fortschrittlichen Algorithmen basieren. Von einem typischen Fahrzeug, das auf einer Hybridquelle (Li-Ionen-Batterien und Superkondensatoren) basiert, welche mit einer fortschrittlichen synchronen Reluktanzmaschine gekoppelt ist, werden multiphysikalische Modelle mit einem ganzheitlichen Ansatz und Bewertungswerkzeugen entwickelt. Dadurch können Energieflüsse optimiert werden, welche die Lebensdauer der Batterie verbessert und damit auch die TCO.
