Reuse of wastewater is a necessity for all arid and semi-arid regions of the planet. but there are two basic findings in this seemingly simple choice: the higher the need for use, the lower the quality of the treatment criteria, while at the same time as high-tech and efficient as the treatment process is, there are pollutants and contaminants. that can not be removed in a completely satisfactory way such as drugs (mainly human consumption), viruses, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes (ARBs & ARGs). But even in areas of the world where reuse is not necessary for maintenance of the mainly agricultural economy (no significant irrigation required) k and therefore the requirements for the final outflow are lower, there is a significant risk from the exact same factors. On an annual basis in Europe, more than 35,000 people die from antibiotic-resistant bacteria, more than 10,000 from deaths in car accidents. Many of these resistant bacteria were created by leaking large amounts of aqueous drug / antibiotic receptors. Effective tackling of the problem is a prerequisite for "Preservation and protection of the environment and risk prevention" (Axis Title 3) and especially for "Improving the efficiency of the use of waste and water resources" (Title Specific Objective. 3.4). The innovative element of the project is of course not the finding of the problem. It is the test on the one hand, of an alternative, which is gaining ground in the scientific community, and on the other a process of its evaluation, in order to determine the real importance and the effect of this solution. This solution is the on-site treatment of wastewater in hot spots where the presence of these substances is expected to be extremely high, such as for example the discharges of hospitals. This action is the main activity of the project, while the realization of an integrated mass balance of pollutants for each of the two areas of action, is expected to give the real importance, need and effectiveness of on-site treatment. In terms of added value of the project, this is related to the possible creation of a new field of activity of the industry dealing with wastewater treatment systems. The on-site treatment of hospital effluents and medicinal effluents in general is in the order of hundreds of millions of euros at European level.

Η επαναχρησιμοποίηση υγρών αποβλήτων είναι μια αναγκαιότητα για όλες τις ξηρικές και ημιξηρικές περιοχές του πλανήτη.Η διαφορά μεταξύ μιας δραστηριότητας ανάγκης με υψηλό ρίσκο, περιβαλλοντικό αλλά και δημόσιας υγείας,με μια ασφαλής δραστηριότητα για χρήστες και καταναλωτές, είναι ο βαθμός επεξεργασίας των λυμάτων.Δυστυχώς όμως υπάρχουν δυο βασικές διαπιστώσεις σε αυτή τη φαινομενικά απλή επιλογή: όσο μεγαλύτερη είναι η ανάγκη χρήσης, τόσο συνήθως χαμηλότερα είναι και τα ποιοτικά κριτήρια επεξεργασίας,ενώ την ίδια στιγμή όσο υψηλής τεχνολογίας και απόδοσης και εάν είναι η διαδικασία επεξεργασίας, υπάρχουν ρύποι και μολυντές, που δεν μπορούν να αφαιρεθούν με απόλυτα ικανοποιητικό τρόπο όπως φάρμακα(κυρίως ανθρώπινης κατανάλωσης),οι ιοί,τα ανθεκτικά στα αντιβιοτικά βακτήρια και τα γονίδια ανθεκτικότητας (ARB & ARGs).Αλλά ακόμα και σε περιοχές του πλανήτη που η επαναχρησιμοποίηση δεν είναι απαραίτητη για τη διατήρηση της γεωργικής κυρίως οικονομίας (δεν απαιτούνται σημαντικές αρδεύσεις) και άρα και οι απαιτήσεις για την τελική εκροή είναι χαμηλότερες, υπάρχει σημαντικός κίνδυνος από του ίδιους ακριβώς παράγοντες. Σε ετήσια βάση στην Ευρώπη πάνω από 35.000 άνθρωπο πεθαίνουν από ανθεκτικά στα αντιβιοτικά βακτήρια, περισσότεροι κατά 10.000 από τους θανάτους σε αυτοκινητιστικά δυστυχήματα. Πολλά από αυτά τα ανθεκτικά βακτήρια δημιουργήθηκα λόγω της διαρροής σε υδατικούς αποδέκτες φαρμακευτικών/ αντιβιοτικών ουσιών σε μεγάλες ποσότητες. Η αποτελεσματική αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος αποτελεί προϋπόθεση για τη «Διατήρηση και προστασία του περιβάλλοντος και πρόληψη κινδύνων» (Τίτλος Άξονα 3) και ειδικά για τη «Βελτίωση της αποδοτικότητας στη χρήση των αποβλήτων και των υδατικών πόρων» (Τίτλος Ειδικού Στόχου. 3.4).Το καινοτόμο στοιχείο του έργου δεν είναι φυσικά η διαπίστωση του προβλήματος. Είναι η δοκιμή από τη μια, μιας εναλλακτικής λύσης, που κερδίζει έδαφος στην επιστημονική κοινότητα, και από την άλλη μιας διαδικασία αξιολόγησης της, ώστε να διαπιστωθεί η πραγματική σημασία και η επίδραση της λύσης αυτής. Η λύση αυτή είναι η επιτόπια επεξεργασία των λυμάτων σε σημεία (hot spots) που η παρουσία των ουσιών αυτών αναμένεται να είναι εξαιρετικά υψηλή, όπως για παράδειγμα οι εκροές των νοσοκομειακών ιδρυμάτων. Αυτή ακριβώς η δράση αποτελεί και τη βασική δραστηριότητα του έργου, ενώ η πραγματοποίηση ενός ολοκληρωμένου ισοζυγίου μάζας των ρύπων για κάθε μια από τις δύο περιοχές δράσεις, αναμένεται να δώσει την πραγματική σημασία, ανάγκη και αποτελεσματικότητας της επιτόπιας επεξεργασίας.Σε ότι αφορά την προστιθέμενη αξία του έργου, αυτή σχετίζεται με την πιθανή δημιουργία ενός νέου τομέα δραστηριοποίησης της βιομηχανίας που ασχολείται με συστήματα επεξεργασίας λυμάτων. Η επιτόπια επεξεργασία νοσοκομειακών λυμάτων και γενικά λυμάτων επιβαρυμένα σε φαρμακευτικές ουσίες, είναι της τάξης των εκατοντάδων εκατομμυρίων ευρώ σε Ευρωπαϊκό επίπεδο.

Expected Results (EN):

The immediate results are expected to be: A technology that satisfactorily and systematically removes drugs and other contaminants from hospital effluents, thus satisfactorily and systematically reducing the environmental and public health risk from the disposal of wastewater treatment plant effluents.. 2. A new market that will be created on the confirmation of the assessment that technologies that can treat these pollutants, in the premises of hospitals, bring a significant result to the quality of the final outflow. More than 5,000 potential application points of similar technologies, with a total value of hundreds of millions of Euros are found in Europe alone, with these numbers increasing 10 times worldwide. 3. Plans and cost estimates for the immediate expansion of the pilot units for all outputs of the hospitals involved, so that there is a direct and measurable impact on the quality of the outputs of the Wastewater Treatment Plants of the wastewater management bodies involved in the project. 4. Systems that will allow actors outside the project to assess both the importance of implementing the project results in their case, but also to assess the cost of this decision and at the same time the expected effectiveness. 5. Confirmation of the important role of the Research Institutions involved in the management and treatment of wastewater and waste, especially in an action with strong elements of innovation and possible commercial applications.

Τα άμεσα αποτελέσματα αναμένεται να είναι: 1. Μια τεχνολογία που με ικανοποιητικό και συστηματικό τρόπο, μπορεί να απομακρύνει φαρμακευτικές ουσίες και άλλους ρύπους ενδιαφέροντος από νοσοκομειακά λύματα, μειώνοντας έτσι αντίστοιχα με ικανοποιητικό και συστηματικό τρόπο τον περιβαλλοντικό κίνδυνο και κίνδυνο για τη δημόσια υγεία από τη διάθεση των εκροών κεντρικών εγκαταστάσεων επεξεργασία λυμάτων. 2. Μια νέα αγορά που θα δημιουργηθεί πάνω στην επιβεβαίωση της εκτίμησης ότι τεχνολογίες που μπορούν να επεξεργαστούν του ρύπους αυτούς, στους χώρους των νοσοκομείων, επιφέρουν σημαντικό αποτέλεσμα στην ποιότητα της τελικής εκροής. Περισσότερα από 5.000 πιθανά σημεία εφαρμογής αντίστοιχων τεχνολογιών, συνολικής αξίας εκατοντάδων εκατομμυρίων Ευρώ συναντώνται στην Ευρώπη μόνο, με τα νούμερα αυτά να 10πλασιάζονται σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα. 3. Σχέδια και εκτιμήσεις κόστους άμεσης επέκτασης των πιλοτικών μονάδων για το σύνολο των εκροών των εμπλεκόμενων νοσοκομείων, ώστε να υπάρχει άμεση και μετρήσιμη επίδραση στα ποιοτικά στοιχεία των εκροών των ΕΕΛ των φορέων διαχείρισης λυμάτων που εμπλέκονται στο έργο. 4. Συστήματα που θα επιτρέψουν σε φορείς έξω από το έργο να εκτιμήσουν τόσο τη σημασία της εφαρμογής των αποτελεσμάτων του έργου στην περίπτωση τους, αλλά και να εκτιμήσουν το κόστος της απόφασης αυτής και ταυτόχρονα την αναμενόμενη αποτελεσματικότητα. 5. Την επιβεβαίωση του σημαντικού ρόλου των εμπλεκόμενων φορέων Έρευνας στη διαχείριση και επεξεργασία λυμάτων και αποβλήτων, ειδικά σε μια δράση με έντονα στοιχεία καινοτομίας και πιθανές εμπορικές εφαρμογές.

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. Acquisition and installation in two hospitals (Heraklion and Larnaca) of pilot wastewater treatment plants with a capacity of 1 m3 / d. The units will consist of: anaerobic MBR, phytoremediation through Lemna minor, ultraviolet unit in combination with hydrogen peroxide. 2. Acquisition and placement of automatic samplers in Wastewater Treatment Plants in Heraklion and Larnaca (one in each Wastewater Treatment Plant). 3. Accurate and specific determination of the contribution (quantitative and qualitative) of hospital outputs to the concentrations of drugs, viruses, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes (ARBs & ARGs) recorded, both in influenza and influent in the effluent of Wastewater Treatment Plants that are driven to utilization (reuse through irrigation). 4. Assess the ability of the proposed treatment systems to remove more than 95% of the CECs from the effluent of the hospital effluent, when they are developed at a pilot level, as they have respectively achieved on an experimental scale. 5. Complete economic and environmental evaluation of the operation of the pilot units and development of guidelines and design models, for full implementation of the total outflow of hospital units, both in the participating hospitals (scale up) and in other hospitals of other areas ( transferability and replicability). 6. A comprehensive plan for the dissemination of results and publicity, using conventional as well as electronic means of communication and information, in order to highlight both the problem and the solution.

Expected Outputs (EL):

1. Απόκτηση και τοποθέτηση σε δύο νοσοκομεία (Ηράκλειο και Λάρνακα) πιλοτικών μονάδων επεξεργασίας λυμάτων δυναμικότητας 1 m3/d. Οι μονάδες θα αποτελούνται από: αναερόβιο ΜΒR, φυτοεξυγίανση μέσω Lemna minor, μονάδα υπεριώδους ακτινοβολίας σε συνδυασμό με υπεροξείδιο του υδρογόνου. 2. Απόκτηση και τοποθέτηση αυτόματων δειγματοληπτών στις ΕΕΛ σε Ηράκλειο και Λάρνακα (μια σε κάθε ΕΕΛ). 3. Ακριβής και συγκεκριμένος προσδιορισμός της συνεισφοράς (ποσοτικής και ποιοτικής) των εκροών των νοσοκομείων, στις συγκεντρώσεις των φαρμακευτικών ουσιών, των ιών, των ανθεκτικών στα αντιβιοτικά βακτηρίων και γονιδίων ανθεκτικότητας (ARB&ARGs) που καταγράφονται, τόσο στην εισροή (influent), όσο και στην εκροή (effluent) των ΕΕΛ που οδηγούνται προς αξιοποίηση (επαναχρησιμοποίηση μέσω άρδευσης). 4. Εκτίμηση της δυνατότητας των προτεινόμενων συστημάτων επεξεργασίας, να απομακρύνουν περισσότερο από το 95 % των CECs, από την εκροή των νοσοκομειακών λυμάτων, όταν αναπτυχθούν σε πιλοτικό επίπεδο, όπως έχουν αντίστοιχα καταφέρει στην πειραματική κλίμακα. 5. Πλήρης οικονομική και περιβαλλοντική αξιολόγηση της λειτουργίας των πιλοτικών μονάδων και ανάπτυξη οδηγιών (guidelines) και σχεδιαστικών μοντέλων, για πλήρη εφαρμογή στο σύνολο της εκροής των νοσοκομειακών μονάδων, τόσο στα συμμετέχοντα νοσοκομεία (scale up), όσο και σε άλλα νοσοκομεία άλλων περιοχών (transferability and replicability). 6. Ένα ολοκληρωμένο σχέδιο διάχυσης των αποτελεσμάτων και δημοσιότητας, με τη χρήση συμβατικών αλλά και ηλεκτρονικών μέσων επικοινωνίας και ενημέρωσης, με στόχο να αναδειχθεί, τόσο το πρόβλημα, όσο και η λύση.
