From the historical – archaeological point of view, the Adriatic sea has been an unique basin, for millennia the priority transport link for the peoples living on the seashore. Their transit left numerous traces in the seabed of the areas concerned by these ancient commercial routes, and ruins of landing places, harbors or inhabited villages by the sea remain. This peculiarity allows us, through the synergy offered by the Interreg programme, to propose the cultural improvement as a strong point towards the local development; such development would mainly be directed to the economic upgrading of the affected areas. The project aims at applying on sample areas a methodological and technological protocol based on research/ knowledge and development/communication of an underwater archaeological site that is complex and multi-stratified, characterized by strong diversity. The project’s objective is therefore to improve destination management and tourism valorisations of underwater cultural sites of East Adriatic region and Increase accessibility of different typologies of underwater sites using Virtual and Augmented Reality in order to try to reduce the loss of important cultural heritages as well as to guarantee an economic spin-off deriving directly from the creation of a sector linked to the tourist-cultural promotion of the context of reference. WRECK4ALL will target local communities as long-term keepers of vitality at tourist destinations, promote co-creative partnerships among tourism and cultural actors, public decision makers, creative companies, associations of citizens, facilitating exchange of information. An immersive VR approach renders underwater sites accessible to a wider public, including people with different kinds of disabilities. Building capacity for professionals already working in this field will help them adapt to the concept, in spite of limited organizational or financial resources.

Expected Results (EN): Increase in arrivals of non-residents staying in hotels and similar establishments

Expected Outputs (EN):

The added value of this project is support to development of smart and sustainable scuba-diving tourism based on underwater cultural heritage enabling accessibility for the wider public through the innovative digital technologies. Project will encourage development of transnational identity through creation of thematic scuba-diving trails along the historic East Adriatic navigational routes based on the shipwrecks and other underwater heritage which are telling the story on connections and the unity of the region. Innovative 3D digitalisation of shipwreck and other underwater heritage will be a method for its preservation, monitoring and eventually wide public access through 3D, Virtual Reality and internet platforms. It will encourage transnational cooperation and transfer of knowledge, skills and competencies between relevant stakeholders based on a good practice examples. It will encourage transnational information exchange and networking between the research institutions, tourism industries, cultural sector, visitors and wider society fostering synergies and destination management and increasing their involvement in the utilisation approaches to common underwater cultural heritage. Eventually, the development of touristic products based on shipwrecks as a common cultural heritage of the East Adriatic region will set a framework for local individual actions, contributing to improve competitiveness, destination management and jobs growth in the small touristic locations, which are in close vicinity to ship and other underwater wreck. It will help to increase the attractiveness of the region for the wider target group of visitors extending the season beyond summer directly influencing on increase of non-residents staying in hotels and similar establishments. It is expected to have an increase of overstay of foreign tourist for at least 2500 per year knowing that the average stay of scuba/diving guest is 5 days per location.
