Octane project aims to enhance visitor’s experience by developing and diffusing a mobile application that allows the visitor to walk around the city as if it was an open museum. The visitors will have the opportunity to discover cultural and natural sites that match their interests, to learn about the city’s architecture, culture and history, as well as the daily routine of the habitants. The key characteristic of the mobile application is the connection between visitor’s navigation and visual contact with the point of interests and information provision. The visitor will download and install the application using Wi-fi hotspots established in the city’s airports and harbors or through the portal of the system. The application will incorporate on the city map all points of interests that had been selected by local authorities as most interesting cultural and natural sites. The Region of Ionian Islands is the Lead beneficiary of this project in cooperation with two Italian partners, the University of Bari and the Consorzio per Lo Sviluppo Dell’ Area Conca Barese, and one Greek partner, the Ionian University – Research Committee.

Expected Results (EN):

OCTANE shall market the cities of Corfu and Conca Barese as a borderless destination. It will establish contacts, strategic objectives and common practices for an inter-authority cooperation and knowledge flow network, on a tourism policy level, between regional and local authorities, but also between public and private actors. Furthermore, it will establish the front and back-end infrastructures of OCTANE, where: (a) public and private stakeholders, particularly SMEs, promote their product, jointly create virtual paths and routes between similar products and services; (b) Visitors receive personalized information but also contribute local and cross-border travel experience feedback to the community. OCTANE will set up the organization of joint seminars, contests, conferences, training and preparation events related to the virtual community. OCTANE will help overcome past mutually separating factors, develop and improve the state of good-neighbor relations in the border regions.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The basic set of services will include: Contact, search, location information for products/services (e.g., hotels, restaurants, traditional local products, museums, monuments); Location-based services for GPS enabled devices, navigation to places/points of interest (POIs) & trajectories connecting POIs; Transportation information within & between regions; Integration with electronic reservation capabilities. The extended services’ set will include: Based on users’ input (e.g., clicks, movement, questionnaires) a profile will be defined in real-time, to be used for personalized services such as POI/route recommendation. The system will encourage visitors to share and recommend travel experiences to other users. Explicit/implicit Information feedback will be used to further ameliorate services. Bluetooth beacons will be used to high accuracy customized positioning and extended interactivity. Finally, tourist/cultural enterprises will act as content providers and manage in real-time their information content offered. At the front end, a Τourism Ιnformation Portal will serve as a focal point and searchable visual representation of touristic/cultural POIs for on-the-move visitors and tourism enterprises. At the back end, the portal will be built upon technologies that enrich the visitor's physical world view with digital data in order to recommend, in a personalized way, places to go, routes to follow and things to do (including and combining activities that can be accomplished through trips between Corfu and city partners from Conca Barese) as well as the hows, whens, wheres of a route selection in a personalized way. Each virtual route will be presented on a digital map and enriched with touristic content (e.g., attractions, accommodation and services) and/or information on regional culture and history. Geo-visualization will be handled by open GIS application software. Communication will be Web-based and Internet-mediated (when available, otherwise pre-stored).
