À l’échelle mondiale, environ 80% de la pollution plastique provient de sources terrestres (GESAMP, 2016) et environ 4 millions tonnes de déchets plastiques entrent dans la mer par voie fluviale chaque année (Schmidt et al 2017. Environ. Sci. Technol. 51, 12246-12253); pourtant, nous manquons d’un état des lieux sur cette pollution et une compréhension de son origine, et d la gestion est donc difficile, fragmentaire et coûteuse. Actuellement dans l’UE, une préoccupation majeure est l’impact des macro et microplastiques sur les écosystèmes et le réseau trophique, ainsi que sur la santé humaine et l’emploi, avec 330 000 personnes travaillant dans la pêche, l’aquaculture et les filières de transformation. Nous devons donc comprendre les origines de la pollution plastique dans le milieu marin pour cibler efficacement ses sources. Les partenaires PPP (dont LABOCEA, CNRS en FR, les universités de Plymouth & QMUL au RU – leaders en matière de plastiques marins – mais aussi l’Agence pour l’environnement et l’Agence française de la biodiversité impliquées dans les réseaux de bassins versants) développeront et utiliseront conjointement un modèle de bassin versant (MT2) pour recueillir des données sur la quantité et les sources probables de pollution plastique sur 7 Pilotes (rade de Brest, baie de Douarnenez, baie des Veys, Medway, Tamar, Great Ouse & Poole Harbour). La pollution plastique arrivant dans les bassins versants sera identifiée, quantifiée sur la base d’approches standardisées, qui seront ensuite évaluées. Ce modèle conceptuel sera utilisé pour identifier les zones d’accumulation de pollution et, où les interventions seraient les plus efficaces. En utilisant ce modèle pour cibler/guider les actions, nous évaluerons le rapport coût-efficacité/durabilité des approches actuelles et innovantes, en créant un portefeuille d’actions (MT3) durables, éprouvées et testées de collectes, qui peuvent être adoptées dans et au-delà de la Zone FMA pour prévenir et mieux gérer la pollution protégeant la biodiversité et les écosystèmes (Défi 6). Dans le MT4 de PPP on s’engagera, avec divers organismes, collectivités, agriculture et industriels de la pêche/maritime, pour déterminer les moyens efficaces de réduire/éliminer les déchets plastiques de leurs activités, de réduire l’empreinte plastique et les orienter vers des Importements plus durables (Défi 5). Grâce à la collaboration entre les partenaires FR et EN, le PPP améliorera la qualité des eaux de transition de la zone FMA (SO 3,2) pendant le projet (Bon Etat Ecologique descripteur 10 DCE) dans ses pilotes, avec un préjudice évité d’environ 580 M€ pour les écosystèmes marins. La reproductibilité de son modèle sera assurée par les réseaux de partenaires clés (voir les lettres de soutien de l’EN, FR au sein/au-delà de la zone FMA) et entraînera un gain de 4540 €M de préjudices évités en 5 ans.

Description (EN):

Globally, about 80% of plastic pollution comes from terrestrial sources (GESAMP, 2016) and approximately 4 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the sea via rivers every year (Schmidt et al 2017. Environ. Sci. Technol. 51, 12246-12253); yet we lack a baseline of the extent of this pollution and an understanding of its origin, and managing this is difficult, piecemeal and costly. The impact of macro plastics and micro plastics on ecosystems and food webs, as well as on human health and employment is a major concern, with 330,000 people working in fishing, aquaculture and processing currently in the EU. We therefore need to understand the origins of plastic pollution in the marine environment to effectively target its sources. PPP partners (including LABOCEA, CNRS in FR, Plymouth & QMUL in EN – leaders in marine plastics- but also the Environment Agency and Agence Française de la Biodiversité involved in catchment based networks) will jointly develop and use a conceptual catchment model (WP2) to gather data on the amount and likely sources of plastic pollution in 7 pilot (Brest Harbour, Douarnenez Bay, Bay of Veys, Medway, Tamar, Great Ouse & Poole Harbour). Plastic pollution entering the catchments will be identified, quantified based on standardised approaches that will be then evaluated. This conceptual model will be used to identify pollution hotspots and where interventions would be most effective. Using this model to target/guide actions, we will assess the cost-effectiveness/sustainability of current & innovative approaches, creating a portfolio (WP3) of tried and tested sustainable sector-specific removal methods that can be adopted in and beyond the FCE area to prevent and better manage pollution protecting biodiversity and ecosystems (Challenge 6). In WP4 PPP will engage with various communities, agriculture and fishing/maritime industries to determine effective ways to capture/remove plastic waste from their activities, reducing plastic footprints and steering them to more sustainable behaviours (challenge 5). Through collaboration between FR and EN partners, PPP will improve the quality of FCE Transitional Waters (SO 3.2) during the project (GES descript.10 WFD) in its pilots, with €580M of harm avoided to marine ecosystems. The replicability of its model will be ensured by key partners networks (see letters of support from EN, FR within/beyond the FCE area) and will lead to a further €4540 of avoided harm in 5 years.
