CWPharma2 is the extension of the CWPharma mains stage project and has 9 partners and 4 associated organizations from 6 Baltic Sea countries. CWPharma2 builds on the outcomes of the CWPharma project, which evaluated occurrence and routes of APIs in the water cycle and provides recommendations on technical and non-technical measures to reduce API-load entering the Baltic Sea. Focus of the CWPharma2 project is on the practical implementation of CWPharma’s main output “Guideline for advanced API removal processes”, which provides a summary on relevant aspects to be considered when planning or operating a WWTP with an API elimination treatment stage. Within CWPharma2, users of the guideline such as WWTP operators or water authorities will be supported in applying different aspects of the guideline: fitness checks of WWTPs (n>10) to identify potential barriers for tertiary treatment options (e.g. routes of sludge disposal, high bromide levels), feasibility studies (n=3) for evaluation of relevant design parameters for an API elimination stage, optimization measures such as bromate reduction strategies as well as conduction of pilot-tests to identify optimal ozonation post-treatment options. The project will deliver relevant input for full-scale implementation API removal at various WWTPs that are in actual need to implement API removal but to not have the knowledge to do so themselves. CWPharma also identified a lack of awareness on APIs in the environment in several states as a serious obstacle in reducing the overall API load into the BS because it reduces the acceptance for the implementation of any kind of reduction measures. Therefore, a focused information video will be produced in national language to increase awareness on these topics in Poland and the Baltic States. Experiences learned during the implementation of the guideline in practice will provide valuable improvements of the guideline. Conducted fitness-checks and feasibility studies can be used as templates for the evaluation of other WWTPs and, thus, enabling relevant actors such as WWTP operators, water authorities or engineering companies to make accurate decisions based on profound knowledge. Direct contacts with WWTP operators during the conduction of the CWPharma2 project along with the information video will vastly increase the visibility and dissemination of the CWPharma project’s outcomes, thus, supporting a large number of stakeholders from wastewater treatment plant operators as well as local, regional, national and even EU authorities to reduce the API emissions into the environment. CWPharma2 is supported by EUSBSR Policy Area Hazards as integrated part of flagship on Pharmaceuticals in the environment (PIE) – a Baltic Sea Region cooperation platform.

Achievements (EN):

The project CWPharma 2 enhanced the knowledge and competence of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) operators as well as supervising and permitting authorities from several countries of the Baltic Sea region. The CWPharma 2 partners turned the “Guideline for advanced API removal processes”, developed by the preceding project, into practice, namely through short-term piloting and feasibility studies. Outcomes: Results of the feasibility studies and showcases for full-scale API removal stages can be used as a blueprint for the evaluation of other WWTPs and, thus, lower barriers to investing in advanced treatment technologies and speed up wide-spread implementation on a full-scale. Thus, WWTP operators and municipalities will have better knowledge on cost-efficient planning, designing and implementation of advanced wastewater treatment stages. Implementation: Implementation of the guideline in different countries (fitness checks in all Baltic Sea region EU countries, in Denmark, Finland, and Estonia) also serve as fore-runner model and best-practice examples. In addition, direct contact with the WWTP operators for the conduction of the fitness check significantly improved transnational promotion of CWPharma’s outcomes in general. Production and promotion of the information video supported local and national actors (e.g. municipalities, environmental agencies, and NGOsto distribute knowledge on the proper disposal of unused medicine and API emissions into the aquatic environment.
