The idea of the project was based on the fact that Hungary and Croatia share natural resources that lie between the borders of their countries and is linked together with the Mura and Drava River. In our project, we are focusing on questions concerning the stability of the local eco-systems and landscapes, habitats for native species – more specifically to birds - and damages by the invasive races. Since these habitats are located along the borders of Hungary and Croatia -along the Mura-Drava Valley it has to be a joint effort by Letenye, Zala and Čakovec, Međimurje to assess and protect these areas and – since these animals also live in cities - also research how we can provide these animals better living conditions in an urban environment. With our strategy, we believe that we are able to help restore the ecological diversity in the border area. Our goal is to assess the current situation with a comprehensive study by our supporting institutions such as natural parks and bird experts from both sides. Based on the combined results we will jointly develop an action plan where the focus is the formation of Special bird protection areas and the ways to contribute to conservation of their area of living either in national parks or in cities. Therefore, project overall objective is to improve ecological status of natural habitats in the bordering region of Međimurje and Zala County. Specific project objectives are: to research and set up a monitoring system in order to assure preconditions to increase the number of habitats with „A: excellent conservation“ status; to improve biodiversity and increase the quality of natural habitats at pilot locations in Čakovec and Letenye; to raise awareness on nature protection and promote responsible management of natural sites. Our designated project areas are the Valley of the Mura-Drava Rivers and the surroundings of the two cities (Čakovec and Letenye). Planned duration of the project is 24 months, during years 2020 and 2021. Target groups of the project are general public, preschool and elementary school children, students, researchers and research institutes, NGO members, experts from project partner’s organizations, local policy makers and planners. The implementation of project includes 5 partners: Town of Čakovec (LB); Međimurje County(B1); Međimurje Nature(B2);Town of Letenye (B3); Balaton-felvidéki Nemzeti Park Igazgatósága (B4). Project includes 5 groups of activities: 1.Project administration and management; 2.Information and publicity; 3.Biodiversity impact research in Međimurje and Zala border area; 4.Pilot projects of parks revitalization in border area; 5.Raising ecological awareness in Međimurje and Zala County border area. All partners are included in all before mentioned groups of activities and responsible for their activities within groups of activities. Expected results of the project are (all with an impact on both sides of the CB area equally): 1. Developed action plan for assuring preconditions to contribute to conservation of bird habitats; 2.Improved biodiversity and increased quality of natural habitats by implementing small scale investments as pilot locations in Čakovec and Letenye; 3.Positive attitude and increased awareness of the importance of nature protection and the importance of biodiversity.

Achievements (EN):

The fact that nature preservation and habitat rehabilitation goes beyond national boundaries was clear to the partners in the project that focuses on enhancing the quality of nature protection in the cross-border area, both in protected and urban areas in the region. Two urban parks have been reinvigorated, with interventions aiming at inviting new species to the urban areas and a bird education centre was established to act as a knowledge hub for experts and amateurs interested in nature and birds. Research has been conducted into the biodiversity of the border area and recommendation for better conservation practices elaborated. Several joint publications have also been developed as an outcome of the project and awareness-raising events organised to introduce a wider section of society to the challenges of nature protection and the importance of preservation of biodiversity.
