Relevant linked projects:
- OceanICU - a Horizon2020 project looking to improve understanding of the role the ocean plays in the global carbon cycle. The Marine Institute is a partner and work package leader in this project, specifically looking at the impacts of fishing and industrial extraction processes on the ocean carbon cycle. (EN) | Outputs from this project, addressing how bottom trawling and dredging, in addition to mining, impact upon the biogeochemical and biological processes influencing carbon sequestration will be useful for feeding into our analyses of the location and vulnerability of blue carbon on the ocean. (EN), MarinePlan - a Horizon Europe project looking to improve transdisciplinary science for effective ecosystem-based maritime spatial planning and conservation in European Seas. The Marine Institute are involved in all work packages in the project and will lead a Celtic Seas case study. (EN) | This project aims to develop and apply a decision support system (DSS) for ecosystem-based maritime spatial planning along with best practice guidance to enhance the design and effectiveness of spatial conservation and restoration measures for marine biodiversity in European Seas. As a result outputs from this project can inform how marine spatial planning approaches can best incorporate blue carbon across the North Atlantic. (EN), Quest - a collaborative project between University College Dublin and the Geological Survey of Norway, financed by the Marine Institute's 2021 Blue Carbon call. This project will conduct a multidisciplinary programme of research to qualify and quantify stocks of carbon on Irish marine sediments, examine and characterise threats to blue carbon in these settings and support the development of long-term management strategies. (EN) | The aims of the Quest project align with BC4MSP, but focus on a local and national scale rather than considering blue carbon at an ocean basin scale. Drawing on expertise within Ireland, would be incredibly beneficial for growing the BC4MSP project consortium and to apply regional and national understanding of blue carbon at a transnational scale. As such project partners from UCD will be sought to build our consortium. (EN), BlueC is a project funded under Ireland's Marine Institute's 021 Blue Carbon call with partners from Galway University and University College Cork. The aim of the project is to advance understanding of the carbon dynamics in Irish coastal and marine environments. (EN) | While the objectives of the BlueC project focus more on coastal marine habitats and their role in sequestering carbon a key goal of the project is to build national capacity for blue carbon research across multiple disciplines. As such support from and inclusion of partners from the BlueC project in BC4MSP will strengthen the project and again utilise skills and knowledge from a national perspective to help improve of understanding of blue carbon and how to manage it at a transnational scale.
