Description (EN):

REDII PORTS focuses on the Programme´s Smart Specialisation area of Renewable Energy from a port authority´s perspective. The project aims to exploit resources for a technically feasible and economically affordable generation, storage and consumption of cleaner energy and fuels with specific reference to 5 alternatives promoted by the REDII 2018/200+AFID 2014/94 Directives that are relevant for a Port Community: ELECTRICITY (SHORE/HYDRO POWER/BATTERY), WIND/LOCK/TIDE/SOLAR; BIODIESEL, HYDROGEN, AMMONIA/METHANOL. To achieve this ambitious goal REDII PORTS will work on a 3-step Roadmap moving from local sources to production/storage in ports to market, closing the cicle by benefiting the regions. REDII PORTS will determine the conditions for blueprinting a medium-to-long term strategy that enables ports to become springboard for new green energy developments in the said fields. It will: identify local excess green resources/feedstock/waste via a CE approach & share them through online tools; define gaps/challenges/possibilities for ports; estimate the demand/potential trading volume of the type of energy taking into account multiple factors, e.g. price, grid. This will allow at least 250 ports/involved external organisations to increase their capacity to take informed decisions on the matter. After setting the framework the partners will test their effective capacity to convert the resources into the selected power/fuel options and/or facilitate other companies´ renewable energy initiatives in their site. To this purpose they will pilot transnationally 13 technology solutions tailored for onshore-sea/inland waterways-the hinterland, with public/private stakeholders. Finally REDII PORTS will strive to ensure that the energy is supplied to the wide Port Community (incl. end-users/businesses in the harbour/citizens) and similar actions are replicated. Upscaling/engaging mechanisms will be deployed, e.g. B2B, good practices, a trading hub, a RE business opportunity platform.

Actual Achievements (EN):

Approaching the project closure during the 04-09/2025 period the 13 technology/tool pilots reached pre-completion and appraisal phase with solutions uptake due on time for the final event in February 2026 (4 already adopted). The Platform Portmarketplace for port waste material recycling and Market Tool for biomass/waste trading were set up and are ready for promotion with potential target users. The BIO-FUEL pilot made a big step forward with the bio-ethanol engines dry tests finished. PoZ completed its Biodiesel Study. In the ELECTRICITY PILOT, Skagen Port´s OPS installing started (conclusion inDecember). The marine waste sorting station is in full progress with the 4 units under production by port personnell, the e-truck already delivered to DK and the e-crane retrofit ongoing. In Korsoer Port the high-voltage cable routing and microgrid with 400-volt cabling were planned and a new transformer station + metering point established. The Battery Energy Storage System was prepared to be connected to the consumption points. In Moss Port the tender´s legal framework & technical specifications for the e-crane were outlined. In the HYDROGEN PILOT Brittany Region´s H2 Study for Brest and St Malo was published. The mobile H2 distribution station will be implemented in the next months. MCS´s H2 sailing continued with more in-depth business assessment of the test. In the METHANOL PILOT Vives´s high-pressure Carbon Capture and Utilization methanol demonstrator was engineered, constructed, validated through cold-flow testing. The engine´s methanol retrofit continued. The Brest Ammonia Report was finished. In the SOLAR/WIND PILOT NPorts battery storage was purchased; the Micro Wind turbines´ performance/economics were evaluated; the container-based wind turbine was optimised. Groundbreaking solar sails were developed/installed in BPS´s hybrid engine vessel. Trelleborg Solar Park Study was completed. The project was publicised via Newsletter III, events, other comms activities .

Deliverables:

MARKET TOOL PILOT: proof-of-concept (“PoC”) trade of a -RED II (Renewable Energy Directive II) and FQD (fuel quality directive)- certified environmental commodity for the port regions with prototy / PILOT the development of a Tool PoC and prototype to exchange resources (with voluntary ISCC/REDCert) to be traded locally and empower RE market players (lenders/producers/suppliers/intermediaries/offtakers) to make sustainable, profitable decisions.
BIOFUEL PILOT: fuel from biomass and/or biomass processing operations for small marine diesels / The pilot in the Ports of Skagen/Egersund will investigate the best available technology for biodiesel production for fleet propulsion, including a business case (resource needed, investment costs, demand, operator/investor matchmaking). BPS will test hybrid propulsion powered by bio-ethanol to be intragated into a vessel with solar sails technology.
EXCESS MATERIALS PLATFORM: Waste management platform to share excess materials from between companies (1 platform based on WP1.2 data) / The proposed platform will serve as a hub where companies can share information about available excess materials for others to use (supply) and express their needs for specific materials (demand). The goal is to facilitate connections between the materals supply & demand, with a preference for regional collaboration. Companies in the ports of Eigersund, Skagen and Zwolle will be surveyed to tailor the platform is much as possible to their needs. 1 platform led by PoZ, VIVES and Skagen.
REDII B2B event / Transnational networking opportunities, led by HHM/Trelleborg, to match demand-supply within the RED II selected energy sources between relevant stakeholders (resources/feedstock/waste suppliers, RE developers, ports, sea/land transport operators)
ELECTRICITY PILOT: onshore power, battery (storage), hydropower to provide green power to ships / Technical specifications, economic feasibility and installation of shore-side eletricity system + electrified waste sorting system (Skagen); test with battery systems + electrified crane & grid integration viability (Korsoer+Moss) and mobile solar-powerd energy storage (BPS)
MATERIAL FLOW ANALYSES. Waste scan of 3 ports to identify and visualise material inflow and outflows of the port areas / Three material flow analyses will be conducted of ports (Eigersund, Skagen and Zwolle). The outcome will be a report where all the streams of the ports are visualised which allow them to make smart decisions by clearly understanding where their greatest environmental impact are taking place. The outcome of this activity can be used for the business cases in WP3 (VIVES+NICE+Eigersund/Skagen/Zwolle ports)
CRAFT PILOT: Renewable Energy Opportunity Sharing & Business Interactive Platform for the Port Eco-system / The existing BDI´s CRAFT tool (www.bdi.fr/fr/plateforme-craft/) will be tailored to the Port Eco-system and its Renewable Energy opportunities. The Model of Brest port will serve as platform to exchange info and as decision making/business tool
HYDROGEN PILOT: Ports of Zwolle´s development of H2 sailing / Facilitating the operation of H2 powered vessel in the ports of Zwolle & Brittany Region: operational specifications, bunkering safety issues, MCS inland waterway sailing trial, Brittany´s pre-operational investigations (transport vessel loop, consumers...) and StatMobH2 Mobile hydrogen bunkering/distribution station testing in St Malo. Integration of pilot data for Strategy.
CAPACITY-BUILDING WORKSHOP: Using a sustainable and intelligent resource stock exchange system for RE developments in port regions / Networking&knowledge gathering event to fill in knowledge gaps and define operational criteria for ports: focus on selected RED II/AFID DIrectives´ green energy & fuel solutions. Led by NICE in cooperation with the partners & their stakeholders.
Capacity-building workshop: "The role of ports in improving the flows of excess resources (e.g. biomass) for Renewable Energy production/supply chain with rural communities" with conclusions paper on Spotlight Theme. / The debate will serve to identify how rural communities could benefit from a Circular Economy approach on renewable energy generation in port areas. The workshop´s conclusions will feed into the Port Startegy in WP1.4
AMMONIA/METHANOL PILOT: energy/fuel from renewables in the Ports managed by the Britanny Region / Economic/technological feasibility/pre-operational study for the local production, shore-side fuelling, storage and supply chain of H2 and ammonia from renewable sources (BREST H2UBS pilot of Brittany Region). Exchanges with VIVES´s lab test (WP2.6).
PORT MEDIUM-TO-LONG TERM STRATEGY for harbours as Renewable Energy Hubs aligning with REDII Directive & AFID Directive / Joint transnational strategy setting directions for ports on how to build on thei potential and capacity to gradually transition into RE & alternative fuel centres (incl. policy/port/technologies/market: recommendations)
Communication, valorisation, legacy / Communication, marketing and capacity building material (at least 1 brochure, 1 poster, 2 pull up, 12 (internal/external) articles/PR, 3 newsletters, website) to valorise the projects products developed and help build a NSR port energy Community.
Capacity-building workshop: "Renewable Energy: meeting the challenge of integrating renewables in the North Sea Basin through ports" with conclusions report on Spotlight Theme. / A customer engaging event with external trasnational experts (shipping lines/ports/environmentalists) will allow to involve new clients that proactively integrate RE solutions in the NS Basin´s ports. The conclusions will feed into the Port Startegy.
TIDE/SOLAR/WAVE/WIND PILOT. Renewable Energy for/in ports / Technical/regulatory viability of scalable options to produce RE from wind/locks/tide/solar/wave, integrated with the harbor infrastructure, will be investigated, field tested and monitored by NPorts.
Final dissemination event / 1 final conference will disseminate the project´s results & Strategy. Invited: ports & their local/regional authorities, port associations, energy sector and RE resources providers, shipping/transport operators, organisations engaged in REDII PORTS.
VIDEO: marketing tool for RED II solutions for ports / A video will be realised by HHM with the other partners to use as communication and marketing tool to bring the identified and tested solutions to the market through the intermediation of the REDII participating ports.
LAB SET UP CCU FOR RENEWABLE METHANOL GENERATION FROM BIOMASS, EMISSIONS FROM COMBUSTION ENGINES AND CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE AIR WITH TEST INSTALLATION FOR METHANOL POWERED ENGINE TO USE AS DEMONSTRATOR FOR THE PILOTS + RESULTS SHARING / A small scale laboratory setup CCU from VIVES will produce renewable methanol based on hydrogen and garbage/waste + small scale demo for methanol-based shore power. Useful testing to support Brittany studies (WP2.4).
CAPACITY-BUILDING WORKSHOPS on the application of RE from different sources (waste/garbage/CCU/…) to energy storage systems in ports / Workshops: on methodology; setup of CCU (engineers, students, ports); use of methanol for combustion engines (engineers, students, ports)

3 WEB-BASED/HYBRID TECHNICAL PILOT GROUP MEETINGS coordinated by Brittany Region / 1 web-based/hybrid technical group meeting per year will be organised for the engineers/technicians/managers engaged in the pilots to exchange info/experience on the tested technologies incl. events minutes with finding (e.g. challenges, risks,...).

Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

By focusing on Renewable Energy generation in/through harbours, REDII Ports will directly contribute to one of the GD´s guiding principle, i.e. ensuring a secure and affordable EU energy supply. It will also address the issue of interconnecting different alternative power sources (H2, methanol, ammonia, biofuel) and reducing emissions in shipping (e.g. via shore power/zero-low emission fuels) and port towns.
By testing and demonstrating the value of introducing alternative fuels and RE solutions in or via harbours, REDII PORTS also addresses the Integrated Maritime Policy´s objective of maximising the sustainable use of seas with a focus on shipping and seaports.
REDII PORTS is clearly enabling the implementation of the guidelines set by the Renewable Energy Directive RED II 2018/2001 and its 2021 revision on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources as part of the EU Green Deal. By choosing to test several RE and green fuel options with REDII PORTS, the project partners adopted the Directive´s guiding principle of technology neutrality in achieving GHG emissions reductions and removals and increasing resilience.
More than 50 % of the REDII PORTS pilots are linked to alternative fuel infrastructure, hence the project directly meets the objective of the AFID Directive of setting up the right frameworks for developing available refuelling and recharging points for alternative fuel vehicles and vessels. It also goes in the direction of the Fit for 55 package incorporated in the recent proposed revision of the AFID that foresees greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 e.g. by onshore power supply.
By focusing some of its pilots on green H2, REDII PORTS tackled the 2020 EU Hydrogen Strategy that recognises that hydrogen can be used as a feedstock, a fuel or an energy carrier and storage, and has many possible applications across industry, transport, power and buildings sectors. The adoption in shipping, trucks and ports will be considered in the project by several partners, from Britanny Region to NPorts, Zwolle, VIVES.
REDII PORTS addresses various Countries policies aiming at promoting Renewable Energy uptake and alternative fuel-based sustainable transport: BE: Belgian National Plan for Recovery and Resilience DE: EEG2021 DK: Danmark fremad– Infrastrukturplan 2035 FR: Plan National Integre Energie-Climat de la France NL: Green Deal on Maritime and Inland Shipping and Ports NO: Nasjonal transportplan 2022–2033 SW: Sveriges integrerade nationella energi- och klimatplan.
