Description (EN):

Climate changes (CC) pose a risk to water resources availability in many CE countries. The regions need to increase resilience to extreme weather events as urban droughts and floods as well as depletion of urban groundwater (GW) resources. Both falling groundwater levels in long term and the excessive amounts of water in short period become urgent risks to be tackled by adequate water management practises. The project aims to enhance the capacity of regions in CE for climate change resilience in the aspect of urban water resources management by joint development of climate-adaptation solutions. The project solutions to be adopted by public administrations and water management bodies will result in a behavioural change in water management and spatial planning practices to increase the resilience to climate change in regions. Key innovation is provided through the integral consideration of water management issues being part of regional and city related wider climate change adaptation concepts and the comprehensive water management approach. The cooperation network of 11 organisations will jointly develop and implement 6 pilot actions, 8 solutions, 6 action plans and a managament strategy to the benefit of cities, regions and related water management and water supply organisations. All solutions will have innovative character and have not been used so far in the involved regions. The transnational cooperation of the partners from various regions is needed to gather exemplification of key aspects to be tackled and related regional expertise. Working at transnational level will increase the capacity and enhance the knowledge transfer to reduce barriers to effective climate change adaptation of regions. We expect that the network and best practise demonstrated will increase awareness of local and regional policy makers encouraging further implementation of jointly developed strategy, action plans and solutions to climate change adaptation in the context of urban water management.

Actual Achievements (EN):

Networking was an essential part of professional information & ideas exchange in the first year of the project. The partners have gained knowledge on climate change scenarios and their implication to local scale water management. They have organized the first local meetings with authorities and stakeholders in order to duly involve institutions responsible for the development and implementation of the action plans in their pilot areas. All pilot actions were successfully launched. In Milan and in Stuttgart, the main achievement was the delineation of the pilot actions designs and the development of the characterization activities needed to achieve the necessary understanding of the systems. In Jaworzno, the concept of pilot action was developed enabling the realization of a blue and green infrastructure investment in next period. In Novy Bydzov, the Water Management Study how to use the rainwater in the city with proposal of the locations and measures for reducing the consumption of drinking water was completed. In Varaždin, the status and trends of groundwater quality were determined and a monitoring system was created to control the effects of climate change. In Ljubljana, the executive design for the implementation of the investment of a retention and drainage system was completed. The essential boundary and design conditions for the granting of consents and the realization of climate-resilient retention and infiltration systems were defined on the basis of extensive discussions with regional interest groups. The basis for cost and efficiency analysis was established. Indicators of spatial planning that play an important role in maintaining groundwater recharge and preserving groundwater quality were defined. The cooperation between partners was a key for all pilot actions and enabled a fruitful design of the actions to be implemented. For better addressing the target groups, the first project film was produced and distributed via project communication channels. Since the project start, MAURICE has made substantial progress in strengthening resilience to climate change impacts on urban water management across Central Europe. A major achievement has been the establishment and consolidation of the Resilient Water Management (ResiWM) network, a transnational platform fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and capacity building among partner cities and institutions. Partners defined key elements of an integrated urban water strategy, serving as a common framework for developing local Action Plans. These are shaped through stakeholder meetings involving regional authorities and practitioners. Two joint technical reports provide methods for assessing climate-related pressures on groundwater and include good practice examples of adaptation measures relevant to local contexts. In Milan, monitoring weirs were built, while groundwater and agricultural models are being advanced. Hydrologic and hydrogeologic models were completed through joint efforts. In Jaworzno and Nový Bydžov, partners co-designed pilots and joined transnational workshops to align approaches and exchange feedback. In Ljubljana and Varaždin, pilots were co-created with local stakeholders. Construction of an infiltration basin is nearing completion, and innovative mapping procedures for infiltration capacity have been developed. A monitoring system for groundwater quality is already operating. Modeling tools including vertical flow measurements and simulations have helped assess climate change impacts. Urban indicators and planning tools were reviewed with regional actors to improve integration into policies. To support visibility and outreach, the first project video was produced and distributed, showcasing MAURICE’s goals. These achievements highlight strong cooperation among partners and show how joint actions lead to practical, locally adapted solutions for climate resilience in urban water systems.

Rehabilitation of the old ecological burden in the area of the former Kovoplast company and the neighbouring inner city of Novy Bydzov (EN) | PP4 succeeded with a request for support from EU fund Operation Programme to realise the project Rehabilitation of the old ecological burden in the area of the former Kovoplast company (2020-2023). The cleaning of the polluted aquifer will increase the possibilities of future use of so far unusable groundwater and increase the resilience of the city to climate change. PP4 will use MAURICE project results in the other EU-supported project, therefore good synergy is expected with no overlapping. There will be effective synergy with no overlapping, as PP3 will use the climate change data from ISAP project as an input for numerical modelling of the pilot area planned in MAURICE.
