Summary
Project acronym: MUSTBE
Project ID: CB0100018
Project start date: 2023-05-01
Project end date: 2026-04-30
Project status:
ongoingRelevant linked projects:
- CleanStormWater (EN) | Interreg Central Baltic project “Testing new storm water treatment solutions for reduction of hazardous substances and toxins inflows into the Baltic Sea (CleanStormWater. https://cleanstormwater.viimsivald.ee/) is aimed at reducing the inflow of amounts of nutrients’, hazardous substances and toxins’ into the Baltic Sea, by testing the next solutions for this purpose - a multi-stage storm water treatment & monitoring system (in Viimsi), a stormwater treatment unit equipped with real-time sensors for monitoring (in Riga) and bioretention basin/cells (in Lieto and Turku).
- The current new Project will rely on the acquired new knowledge of technological solutions for reducing loads of hazardous and its e-monitoring of Project CleanStormWater, but it takes the next steps in this direction, by combining storm water purification technologies with nature-based solutions (incl. slowing down flowrates, purifying and reusing the storm water for municipal purposes, etc) and developing storm water system remote management/ control function, in addition to e-monitoring capability developed in the framework of CleanStormWater Project. (EN), NOAH (EN) | Interreg Baltic Sea Region programme Project “Protecting Baltic Sea from untreated wastewater spillages during flood events in urban areas” (NOAH, https://sub.samk.fi/projects/noah/) improved spatial planning and the operation of urban storm water runoff and drainage systems in order to reduce the pluvial flood risk and pollution caused by extreme weather such as heavy rains and floods. NOAH developed a new layer for extreme weather events to be used in combination with traditional city planning techniques shifting the municipal planning from fragmented individual site-based planning to a holistic approach covering the entire urban catchment. In addition, first pilots on smart urban drainage systems were developed and implemented in the pilot municipalities. NOAH is also one of the pilot cases in COST action DAMOCLES.
- The current new Project is using the outcomes of Project NOAH, using extreme weather layer and holistic approach as basis in MUSTBE, implementing the lessons learnt on pilots on smart urban drainage systems, tools for stakeholder involvement in the whole Baltic Sea level. (EN), HEAWATER (EN) | Interreg Central Baltic project HEAWATER was aimed at restoration of urban streams and at reducing the transport of nutrients as well as micro and macro litter from small urban streams to the Baltic Sea. The project also raised awareness of citizens on the value of urban streams.
- The current new Project will benefit from HEAWATER project results, but its focus is on hazardous substances and stormwater management, whereas HEAWATER has a particular focus on restoration of the urban streams. (EN), iWater (EN) | Interreg Central Baltic Programme project „Integrated Storm Water Management” (iWater, http://www.integratedstormwater.eu/) was aimed at improving urban planning in the Baltic Sea Region cities – by developing an Integrated Storm Water Management (ISWM) system and a palette of stormwater planning tools, as well as, by promoting application of the green infrastructures with aim to increase urban resilience against climate change.
- The current new Project will take forward the results of the iWater project and lessons learnt about integrated and sustainable stormwater management concepts, tools and techniques, such as Integrated Storm Water Management (ISWM) approach and Stormwater Management Toolbox, incl. the Green Factor tool, to ensure the presence of sufficient and high-quality green infrastructures in all pilots of the new Project. (EN), WaterChain (EN) | Interreg Central Baltic Programme Project “Recovering the Baltic Sea by reducing harmful inflows of nutrients and hazardous substances” (WaterChain”, http://waterchain.eu/) implemented the following related activities: 1) Raising awareness of the effects of everyday actions on the Baltic Sea and introducing various means to reduce the chemical and nutrient load, and 2) Reducing the inflow of nutrients and hazardous substances by utilizing environmental technology – to pilot watersheds as a practical tool to reduce the harmful inflows into the Baltic Sea.
- The current new Project will benefit from the Project WaterChain, by extensive network on grass-root level stakeholders to foster stakeholder commitment. The extensive knowledge on nutrients and hazardous substances is used as part of investments technical planning and implementation of results. (EN), COST DAMOCLES (EN) | The European wide CA17109, DAMOCLES “Understanding and modelling compound events” themes are climate change, multivariate climate extremes, extreme value statistics, disaster risk and extreme events, themes interlinked strongly to MUSTBE theme. SAMK is a WP leader on stakeholder involvement in DAMOCLES. The MUSTBE will benefit from the Project COST DAMOCLES, by expertise on stakeholder involvement and will disseminate of the MUSTBE project results to the European wide network. (EN)
