Het belangvan waterstof en brandstofcellen voor het omzetten van waterstof in elektrischeenergie neemt momenteel snel toe. In brandstofcellen wordt chemische energieomgezet in elektrische energie die bijvoorbeeld gebruikt wordt om eenelektromotor voor voertuigen aan te drijven of om huishoudens onafhankelijk vanhet net van elektriciteit en warmte te voorzien. De zogenaamde bipolaireplaten (BPP) als geïntegreerd onderdeel van een brandstofcel hebben een zeerbijzondere relevantie met betrekking tot de functionaliteit en efficiëntie vanbrandstofcelsystemen. Zezorgen voor de elektrische verbinding van de stapels en een gedefinieerdegasverdeling in de brandstofcel. Ze worden ook gebruikt voor effectieve koelingen gasafdichting. De kosteneffectieve productie van brandstofcellen, en daarmeeeen hoge marktpenetratie in de toekomst, wordt momenteel echter nog ernstigbeperkt, onder meer door de hoge kosten van bipolaire platen. De huidige in demarkt toegepaste productieprocessen op basis van koudvormen (walsen, ponsen,enz.) zijn niet geschikt om de in de toekomst vereiste hoeveelheden tegen lagekosten te leveren, vooral vanwege de steeds kleiner wordende materiaaldikte vanBPP (< 100 μm). Dit is precies de aanleiding voor het project: de productievan metalen BPP moet volledig heroverwogen worden en door middel van warmvormende inzet van BPP op grote schaal mogelijk maken. In het kader van het projectmoet daarom op basis van simulatie een laboratoriumschaal opstelling wordenopgezet waarmee de vorming van het BPP wordt uitgevoerd bij verhoogdetemperaturen (warmvormen bij T < 1000°C) in tegenstelling tot de gevestigde processen. Op basis vande verkregen resultaten op laboratoriumschaal zal het project zich ten doelstellen een overeenkomstig opschalingsconcept te ontwerpen en toekomstperspectieven voor het Interreg-programmagebied teidentificeren in het kader van een routekaart.

The importance of hydrogen and fuel cells for converting hydrogen intoelectrical energy is currently increasing rapidly. In fuel cells, chemicalenergy is converted into electrical energy and used, for example, to drive anelectric motor for vehicles or to supply households with electricity and heatindependently of the grid. The so-called bipolarplates (BPP) as an integrated part of a fuel cell have a very special relevancewith regard to the functionality and efficiency of fuel cell systems. They ensure the electrical connection of the stacks aswell as a defined gas distribution inside the fuel cell. They are also used foreffective cooling and gas sealing. The economic production of fuel cells andthus a high level of market penetration in the future is currently stillseverely limited, among other things, by the high costs of the bipolar plates.Current manufacturing processes in the cold state that are established on themarket (rolling, stamping, etc.) are not suitable for providing the quantitiesrequired in the future at low costs, particularly because of the materialthickness of the BPP (< 100 µm), which is becoming ever smaller in thefuture. This is exactly where the project comes in: The production of metallicBPP is to be completely rethought using hot forming and to enable itsdissemination. As part of the project, a laboratory system is to be set up based on asimulation, with which the forming of the BPP is carried out at elevatedtemperatures (hot forming at T < 1000°C) in contrast to the establishedprocesses. Based on the lab scale results obtained, the project also aims todesign a corresponding scale-up concept and to show future perspectives for theInterreg program area as part of roadmapping.

DieBedeutung von Wasserstoff und Brennstoffzellen zur Wandlung des Wasserstoffs inelektrische Energie nimmt aktuell stark zu. Bei Brennstoffzellen wird chemischein elektrische Energie umgewandelt und beispielsweise zum Antrieb einesElektromotors für Fahrzeuge oder aber auch zur netzunabhängigen Strom- undWärmeversorgung von Haushalten eingesetzt. Die sog. Bipolarplatten (BPP) als integrierterBestandteil einer Brennstoffzelle besitzen dabei eine ganz besondere Relevanzim Hinblick auf die Funktionsfähigkeit und Effizienz von Brennstoffzellensystemen. Sie stellen die elektrischeVerbindung der Stapel sowie darüber hinaus eine definierte Gasverteilung imInneren der Brennstoffzelle sicher. Sie dienen zusätzlich der effektiven Kühlungsowie der Gasabdichtung. Die wirtschaftliche Herstellung der Brennstoffzellen unddamit eine zukünftig hohe Marktdurchdringung ist aber aktuell u.a. durch diehohen Kosten der Bipolarplatten noch stark limitiert. Aktuelle, am Marktetablierte Herstellungsprozesse im kalten Zustand (Walzen, Stanzen etc.) sind insbesonderewegen der perspektiv immer geringer werdenden Materialstärke der BPP (< 100µm) nicht geeignet die zukünftig nötigen Stückzahlen zu niedrigen Kosten bereitzustellen.Genau hier setzt das Projekt an: Die Herstellung metallischer BPP soll mittelsder Warmumformung gänzlich neu gedacht werden und die Marktdurchdringung ermöglichen. ImRahmen des Projekts soll daher, basierend auf einer Simulation, eine Laboranlageaufgebaut werden, mit der die Umformung der BPP im Gegensatz zu den etabliertenVerfahren bei erhöhten Temperaturen (Warmumformung bei T <1000°C) durchgeführt wird. Basierendauf den gewonnenen Lab-Scale-Ergebnissen setzt sich das Projekt weiterhin zumZiel, ein entsprechendes Scale-Up-Konzept zu entwerfen sowie im Rahmen eines Roadmappings Zukunftsperspektiven für das Interreg-Programmgebiet aufzuzeigen.
