Background Setomaa has become an important cultural tourism destination. Nature tourism is also on the growth trend, and due to the strong nationally important military historical background, there is an opportunity to expand the target group of the region. In this context, there is a site which offers unique and exciting insight into military heritage in Setomaa - Northern and Southern Camp. The Northern Camp is special because of its preserved buildings - no other military object in Estonia has been preserved in this form. This alone deserves attention and presentation, as the buildings have architectural value in addition to the historical background of the war. Objectives Overall objective - based on the history and potential of Northern Camp and Southern Camp, to form them into a full cultural and military tourism complex that will offer to visitors an exciting insight into the history of Northern Camp and Southern Camp, incl. the living conditions at that time, by using the repaired-renovated infrastructure and modern information technology solutions. Direct objective - by focusing on the Northern Camp, to offer visitors the opportunity to get to know the sights and exhibitions of the site throughout the year. More specifically, visitors can: go through a trail introducing the various objects (15) of the Northern Camp, where each object is equipped with an information stand and an audio guide and virtual interfaces integrated with it; visit individual specific objects without going through the trail (e.g., due to unfavourable weather conditions or lack of time). Implementation The project will be implemented as follows: WP T1 Research and mapping Research work, preparation of texts Mapping of the area WP I1 Trail and its objects Tidying up the trail - clearing the brush, repairing the trail surface Marking of the trail and objects - direction signs, white stones, etc.; information boards with QR codes Repair/renovation works of some objects, incl.:casino walls - clearing the brush, fill the walls with sand; stairs - cleaningshooting range - clearing of trees and bushes, secure the location of the targets (in the ditch) with a wooden wallbarracks - arranging the entrance of one barracks to display the barrack interior view, incl. by using 3D visualisation based on photos + installation + lighting; construction works and electrical cabling; window/door exchange-arrangement WP C Communication and visibility Public events - opening event with tour Publications - news-articles-interviews in the media Promotional material - materials for visitors Digital activities - 3D visualisation of barrack; website of the camp Project Partners Setomaa Municipality, Lead Partner Setomaa Museums, Partner 2 Setomaa Tourism, Partner 3

Expected Results (EN): The strength of cross-border activities by institutions in education, R&D, and innovation sectors

Expected Outputs (EN):

The direct objective of the current Project is to focus on the Northern Camp part of the whole target area, to offer visitors the opportunity to get to know the sights and exhibitions of this site throughout the year. More specifically, visitors can: - go through a trail introducing the various objects (15) of the Northern Camp, where each object is equipped with an information stand and an audio guide and virtual interfaces integrated with it; - visit individual specific objects without going through the trail (e.g., due to unfavourable weather conditions or lack of time). At the moment, it is difficult to say exactly, but in the first year after the completion of the work on the Northern Camp project, we tentatively estimate the number of visitors to be 30 000 , which will then gradually increase to approx. 40 000. in the 2nd year and to 45 000 in the 3rd year. As the development of Northern Camp requires knowledge and competencies in a wide range of subjects (incl. military history, tourism, ICT), the objectives of the Project can be achieved only through close co-operation of local authorities, cultural institutions, R&D and innovation organisations. Because of this, the Project Partnership includes Setomaa Municipality, Setomaa Museums, and Setomaa Tourism.
