Piirissaar is the small mysterious island with an area of 7.5 square kilometres. Island is located between Estonia and Russia at the confluence of Lake Peipus and Lake Lämmi in Tartu municipality. The whole island, is a natural reserve: the swamps here have many species of frogs and toads that have been entered into the red list. Piirissaar also has many other protected amphibian species, as well as rare birds and plants. Russian Old Believers form a large part of the inhabitants. They have lived mostly in isolation and have maintained their religious beliefs, their culture and their dialect. The objective of the project is to support the preservation of the history and cultural heritage of this small island and its inhabitants. The project also includes improving the quality of social life of local residents. The activities planned within the project are aimed at improving the well-being of local residents as well as providing added value to tourists visiting the island. Results achieved within the project and their impact:Information boards, Island brochures and website – result: introducing and preserving the island's history, make the island more attractive to tourists.New stage in the village square – result: promoting the cultural life of local residentsClean beaches – result: improved swimming conditions. The beneficiaries are local residents and tourists.New house of prayer and iconostasis - In 2016, the old prayer house was destroyed by fire. The existence and use of a prayer house for religious services is very important for the preservation of the culture of the Old Believers.

Expected Results (EN): Accessibility of cross border social, health and sporting services, and vocational and language training

Expected Outputs (EN): Expected results within the project: island visitation activity, cultural activities, the quality of life of local residents, improving opportunities for social life. Previously described project results are related to social life and services, and have a positive impact in this area.
