Around one million species already face extinction, many within decades, unless action is taken to reduce the intensity of drivers of biodiversity loss. Indicators of the extent and structural condition of ecosystems, of the composition of ecological communities, and of species populations overwhelmingly show net declines over recent decades (IPBES, 2019 Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services). The same report mentions that Biodiversity provides us with clean air, fresh water, good quality soil and crop pollination. Therefore, this proposal aims to enhance (functional) biodiversity for climate resilience in dairy grasslands. This project focuses on dairy farming, a main agricultural sector in terms of biodiversity loss and land use. Whereas many dairy farmers are willing to contribute to biodiversity recovery, they experience barriers in terms of a lack of knowledge about how to integrate biodiversity, cost coverage, adverse incentives from agricultural policies and many other problems. DivGrass will tackle these barriers through: regional knowledge transfer from farmer-to-farmer, through farmer-trainers, capacity building and transnational transfer in the triple helix project network, the establishment of transdisciplinary field labs with test beds for biodiversity, climate adaption and resilient seeds and tests for digital monitoring and technology development involving regional authorities, competent in facilitating farmer-friendly regional planning, digitally supported grassland monitoring via state-of-the art artificial intelligence (AI), drone data and tailor-made app to enhance farmer decisions, co-produced, scientifically supported national and EU policy recommendations. DivGrass, involves partners from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany & Sweden.

Actual Achievements (EN):

During this period, Agroväst Livsmedel AB conducted fieldwork at three Swedish farms, while German partners UniGöttingen and Uni Vechta prepared for the 2025 season. Göttingen set up field labs on five farms with species-rich and species-poor seed mixtures and began biomass sampling. Vechta focused on advancing data collection by testing an improved drone system and planning regular sampling of biomass, drone images, and audio recordings. Biomass and soil samples from Sweden were sent to Göttingen, and audio data to Utrecht. VLM refined the biodiversity classification system, incorporating indicator species and gathering partner feedback for consistent biodiversity assessments across the North Sea Region. VLM also purchased a drone and trained staff to develop an app enabling real-time biodiversity monitoring. Spectro AI developed digital tools, including drone and mobile applications and a web platform, for efficient biodiversity data collection and AI-powered analysis. This supports user needs and ensures scalable, practical solutions beyond the project’s duration. Uni Utrecht advanced ecological and socio-economic assessments, preparing a survey for five countries planned for fall 2024. VLM prepared stakeholder interviews and surveys to inform policy recommendations, emphasizing the value of species-rich grasslands for biodiversity and farmers. Chambres Régionales d’agriculture de Bretagne analyzed CAP constraints on grassland management. Boerenbond and Boerenbond Projecten contributed to project management and financial reporting preparations. Project visibility increased through presentations at SLU forage crops and Sustainimal meetings and participation in Agriflanders events. Boerennatuur Vlaanderen shared agroecological knowledge gained from training courses with colleagues and farmers. Regular consortium and working package meetings were held. The consortium meeting in Sweden were on the 14&15 of May and will be reported on in the next reporting period.

Deliverables:

Bottom-up set up of regional field labs / (Year 1) Set up field labs on at least 3 farms per region. They serve as learning networks and grassland testing-stations during up to 3 vegetation seasons. For acquisition and selection of farms/ farmers and for the planning of the field lab sites, a transdisciplinary involvement of farmers, farmer organisations, researchers, and digitalization experts is planned. AI algorithm prototype for the drones and app prototype (WP1) will be tested and iteratively imporoved in these field labs as well.
Design experimental functional biodiversity interventions / (Year 1) Farmers and researchers co-design functional biodiversity interventions for field labs based on needs. We co-create a knowledge database on best practices of developing and harnessing grassland functional biodiversity, in collaboration with farmers, farmer organizations and researchers. We also co-create innovative grassland species combination and management experiments based on grassland functional biodiversity, in collaboration with farmers, farmer organizations and researchers.
Kick-off conference / (Year 2) Organise a “DivGrass kick-off conference” with all stakeholders and advisory board members: The aim to get to know each other better with all transnational project partners, deepen shared understanding of network and project objectives, convey culture of transnational cooperation and learning. In addition, a live demonstration of a drone that flies on a small parcel and immediately generates some grassland indicators to show how the planned DivGrass app can support the farmer.
Framework-Setting Conference / (Year 1) A first organisational meeting on project management issues attended by all partners to clarify the planned work for the first year - and setting the edges for the 4 year project period, to distribute tasks, to agree on a common assessment framework and to discuss and furthermore define the criteria for the project s risk register. Beyond, the advisory board tasks and expert assessment process is discussed and agreed upon too. Communiation issues will be tackled as well.
Communication activities / We will launch a project homepage with newsletter (Year 1), use different social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) and will disseminate the content of papers, articels and guidelines produced during the project as much as possible at national/ international events and conferences (Year 2-4). Due to the advisory board membership of the European Grassland Federation, we will have the chance to present at the General Meeting of the EGF in 2024 (300-400 people from all over Europe).
Selection of sample farms / (Year 1) Each DivGrass partner can rely already on a broad regional network of farmers. They will do interview with farmers and select farms (5-20 farms per country) that will be suitable to participate in DivGrass. Some partners also have demonstration farms, where it is possible to test and demonstrate more than on real farms, suitable demonstration farms will also be included. The farmers participate voluntary and the partners will offer them advice and different renumeration opportunities.
Digital education concept / (Year 1-4) Our digital education program consists of creating video tutorials (interviews with farmers telling about how they manage their grassland in a nature-inclusive or regenerative way, video clips in which a farmer trainer explains how he/she manages the sward) webinars, preparing user guides for data collection and using DivGrass app, creating a “Get started” video for quick involvement of farmers to use the app. This activity is organized by each partner country the respective language.
Agronomical assessments / (Year 1)(i) Performing literature review on agronomical consequences of measures (ii) Assessing grassland performance (milk, meat of dairy) of participating farms in relation to the actual level of biodiversity. (Year 2 and 3) Assessing consequences of biodiversity measures adopted on participating farms at plot and farm level as compared to conventional practice. (Year 3 to 4) Evaluate agronomic consequences of establishing grassland biodiversity measures in relation to biodiversity benefits.
Gather knowledge on adoption barriers from field labs / (Year 3) Conduct regional focus group sessions with field lab actors and farmer trainers on adoption barriers and incentives for long-term functional biodiversity increase; include wider sets of actors if useful. With WP3: discuss results of field labs, discuss nature of barriers and why they are problematic, understand how barriers differ among farmers, explore origin of barriers in policies and other areas of the agricultural ‘regime’ (production paradigm, demands from processors, banks etc.).
Selection of indicators/ measurement methods / (Year 1) Initially we will hold several exchange meetings between practical, scientific and digital experts of the partner regions where we discuss suitable indicators and how to measure them. These indicators (e.g. grassland productivity, feed quality, biodiversity and soil quality indicators, grazing behaviour of livestock, tolerance to drought) serve to feed the planned classification-system and digital algorithm. The meetings will be online and on the field in all partner regions.
Farmer trainer training concept / (Year 1-4) In each country 1 or 2 experienced farmer trainer are specialist on diverse grassland. They organise training courses for min. 60 farmers (20/ year). Long-term impact; knowledge of trainers will be documented into a field guidebook for managing diverse grasslands, farmer trainer will organize field trips for a handful of farmers who can be educated to become trainer themselves. Our digital experts develop 1-day course material for these trainers and a help center for the DivGrass app.
Ecological assessments / (Year 1-3) Field studies on a range of farms to quantify and monitor plant species diversity and vegetation climate resilience, monitor insects and birds and estimate impacts on regional biodiversity recovery. (Year 3) Link monitoring data to Remote Sensing data and biodiversity (indices) assessments using app to support app development and application.
Design regime policy interventions from field lab insights / Design tailored interventions in policy and legislation at multiple levels (local, regional, national and EU). (Year 4-5) Organise 5 co-production workshops (1 per country) with policy-makers and stakeholders from cross-sectors at different levels; one workshop at the European Commission to contribute to the upcoming EU-program design 2027 for more options, removing barriers and to create favourable experimental pathways for farmers to better functional biodiversity in grassland management.
Development of classification-system / (Year 1) The planned classification-system is based on structural, functional and species (bio)diversity of grasslands, including key indicators. The aim is to develop a common classification system across the partnership, so grassland biodiversity is monitored the same way in all different partner regions. This classification-system will be a common result of the project, will deliver the possibility to compare different regions and can support to learn and to exchange between each other.
International farmer trainer meetings / (Year 2-4) Once a year farmer trainer of each partner country meet internationally to discuss specifics of training concept for their countries/ regions and update their knowledge. They identify common constraints and opportunities for information and technology dissemination. Trafo:agrar will invite the local trainer for these international trainer meetings and organize these meetings in changing partner countries, with field trips to refresh knowledge and get new practical input.
Socio-economic assessments / (Year 1) Literature review: produce a list of barriers to the adoption of sustainable grassland management practices, categorised into different types of barriers. (Year 1-2) Interviews with farmers from sample farms and sector specialists to identify country-specific types of barriers and tailor surveys to the national context. (Year 2-3) Conduct surveys (partly standardised across the 5 countries, partly nation-specific) to identify most important barriers, disseminated via national partners.
Disseminate policy recommendations / (Year 3-4) Disseminate the jointly designed policy interventions (policy brief) to regional and national governments in the 5 countries (via DivGrass partners, related stakeholders and education- and biodiversity consultans ) to other EU regional and national governments for instance via the European Grassland Federation and the European Commission.
Feeding trials with high functional biodiversity grasses / (Year 2-3) A test group of dairy cows or young stock on a commercial farm will graze a test mixture, which is compared to the regular pasture mixture on the farm. Data will be collected on pasture and animal performance. (the farm is located in Sweden)
Initial farm and field data collection and mapping of grassland diversity / (Year 1) At the (demo) farms’ grassland parcels the classification system is tested, the data is collected by monitoring on site and/or with surveys. All different grassland parcels are classified and mapped initially. These will all be collected by the partners in their countries and disseminated across the partnership. The digital experts will collect ground truth data based on DivGrass biodiversity classification and drone RGB images on sample farms at various heights and weather conditions.
Final conference / (last year) Organise final conference with all stakeholders and interested guests (press, government, farmers, members of european commission, realted project members, rural/urban citizens etc.). The final confernce will last 2 days and will also include a field trip and demonstrations of the drone and the app.
Co-learning between farmers / (Year 1-4) For co-creation and dissemination of knowledge, focus groups and group field trips will be organised. Focus groups will be peer-to-peer focus groups in which farmers exchange practical knowledge and experience and mixed focus groups in which farmers, researchers, policy makers, and extension service providers exchange knowledge from different perspective. Therefore, each country organizes 1 field trip/ year; 4 in total, Focus groups: meet each spring for farmers who are experimenting.
Evaluation and follow-up of experimental measures / (Year 3-4) Field lab actors identify common regional and transnational success factors and limits of functional biodiversity increases after the last vegetation period in agronomical, socio-economic and ecological dimensions.
Rural-urban linkages / (Year 4) Preserving pasture farming as a cultural landscape in the North Sea region can also be important for urban areas if the local recreational value plays a role and the food is to come from regional, natural and sustainable production. For this, all participating countries will organize at least one field day especially for urban citizens, to disseminate practical knowledge of economic and ecological sustainable grassland farming.
Review and test AI algorithms to convert drone images to biodiversity classes/indicators / (Year 1-4) Exploring and combining various algorithm types to model the relationship between objects and patterns in image and biodiversity indicators (WP1/activity 4). There are several AI algorithm types that might be useful to model the biodiversity class/indicator in RGB images; so the aim of this activity is to test and evaluate these algorithms and select the most accurate and generic algorithms and fine-tune them to be used in the backend of DivGrass app.
Knowledge exchange and demonstration / (Year 2-3) Farmers from trial farm regions exchange knowledge after vegetation period 1 and 2; they demonstrate their experiments to other DivGrass test regions after vegetation period 1; insights can inform experimental decisions for the next vegetation period. This should be done in connection with partner meetings and farmer trainer activities (WP2).
Development of the DivGrass app (web application) / (Year 1-4) Building a database system to store the future farmers information and data and generated information such as biodiversity maps and indices. Developing a cloud-based web application (backend) that allows farmers the interaction with the system including 1) field specification, 2) image uploading 3) biodiversity map visualization and report generation. Developing a user-friendly interface that farmers can use the functionalities of the DivGrass app.
Benefits for farmers and grassland / (Year 3-4) Farmers should be made aware that ecological advantages (e.g. drought tolerant due to deep-rooted varieties, more carbon sequestration due to deep rooting, positive impact on soil health) could also lead to economic advantages in a next step. This activity draws conclusions from WP3 to evaluate benefits of enhanced functional biodiversity in grassland, provide them especially to farmer trainers, workshop/ field trip organizers (WP2) and base policy recommendations on them (WP4).
AI algorithm to monitor grassland biodiversity on prototype level / Spectro AG, as our digital expert partner, will develop an AI algorithm with input and consultancy of farmers, researchers and other target groups. These algorithm can detect different grasland species, and can give a monitoring about the biodiversity level of the grassland, based on the results of the status quo analyses and classification modell of WP1.
Jointly developed transnational biodiversity classification model / In order to develop a uniform classification system across several countries, an initial data collection (status quo) is required, which is then used to (further) develop a classification system. With this classification system, farmers and scientists can work to quantify grassland biodiversity and make it comparable. In this way, different levels of biodiversity can be determined.
Communication activity / Reaching out to farmers through new network building, already existing and growing network and through the practical partners.

Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

The European Green Deal and its farm to fork strategy treat agriculture as more than an economic sector: it also contributes to sustainability goals such as social well-being, ecosystem health, and food and nutrition security. DivGrass will show pathways for agriculture’s contribution to biodiversity increase, resonsible consumption and production (SDG12) and more climate resilient grassland in the North Sea Region.
The EU’s biodiversity long-term strategy for 2030 is meant to protect nature and reverse the degradation of ecosystems, to get Europe's biodiversity on recovery by 2030 with specific actions and commitments. The project objective of DivGrass is 100% consistent with this EU stratgy.
The Strategy for Shaping Europe´s Digital Future will help improve Europe's ability to predict extreme weather patterns, assess the impact of climate change and respond to environmental disasters. DivGrass is also taking advantage of AI and digitalisation, which are already available at affordable prices and can also be used by technically minded people without major hurdles. The DivGrass AI algorithm and app will contribute to a much more effective and time-saving biodiversity monitoring.
DivGrass actively contributes to priorities of the Territorial Agenda 2030: e.g. sustainable development and climate change, loss of biodiversity and land consumption, nature, landscape and cultural heritage and working across national borders.
DivGrass implements the four priority areas of the North Sea Region 2030 Strategy on a productive & sustainable, a climate neutral, a connected and a smart north sea region. DivGrass will also strive for a lively exchange with the NSC and involve the relevant representatives as much as possible in the project events.
The Farm to Fork Strategy encourages especially farmers to start experiments with new foods, products, services, and business and therefore opening opportunities for change. Regional authorities and politicians are in the focus too ,setting up new and improved governance models. DivGrass contributes to Rethinking Agriculture in the field of ecoysstem services for European Grassland Management.
