Over the past decades, mental health has increasingly gained track and importance. Despite the high frequency of mental health issues and increased awareness for the need to seek help, barriers like stigma and long waiting lists still remain, leading to treatment gaps: a lot of people need mental health care, but do not get it. One possible solution is the use of technology: it has the potential to serve hard-to-reach populations and to elaborate the tradition treatments. Despite this potential, technology comes with its challenges regarding adaptation, uptake and adherence, also in the North Sea Region. These aspects can be improved by the involvement of end users in every step of technology development to adapt the technology to its users. During this project we therefore aim to develop guidelines for entrepreneurs and mental health organizations on how to involve end users and mental health professionals in the (transnational) development, implementation and adaptation of mental health technology. This shall be a joint collaboration by the project partners (GGz Centraal (NL), Thomas More University of Applied Sciences (BE) and Centre for Digital Psychiatry (DK)) of which GGz Centraal and Centre for Digital Psychiatry have previously already involved end users in the development of their applications. Alongside insights regarding the involvement of end users, transnational implementation of technology will also be included in the guidelines, in order to facilitate a broader uptake. After the development of the joint guidelines, they will be applied in tandem pilots. The Dutch Stress Autism Made (SAM) application of GGz Centraal will be adapted and rolled out with the involvement of Danish end users; the Danish application for suicidal thoughts will be adapted to and implemented in the Netherlands. During and after the project, there will be attention to the communication to ensure the findings can be used by all relevant stakeholders.

Actual Achievements (EN):

The SUPER project started with a hybrid kick-off event on September 7, 2023, organized by GGz Centraal in the Netherlands (lead partner). During the event, we presented our aims and plans to a large, international group of stakeholders with 66 SME's, digital mental health organizations, patient federations and some European organizations engaging in our expert pool. The three countries and organizations collaborating in SUPER have the perfect setting to tandem pilot and write together about transnational scaling of digital mental health innovations. Since thekick-off, we have jointly developed a first version of the guidelines for (transnational) user participation in the development, adaptation and implementation of digital mental health. To do so, we have conducted literature research, consulted our expert pool for additional literature and advice, discussed findings and compared them with in-house expertise from the project partners, and finally created a first version. This version was shared with selected expert pool members and discussed during a webinar, leading to the second version of the guidelines that is now being pilot tested in The Netherlands and Denmark. To prepare for the pilot phase, we met in Antwerp in early march to create a detailed project plan with an accompanying logbook, to keep track of the steps we make. At the same time, we have exchanged the project apps between project partners in order to familiarize with and translate the apps. Up till now, we have already collected data on the translation. With respect to online communication and dissemination, we have shared 3 project newsletters with both the expert pool and the general public to inform them of our progress, and we preparing submitting a scientific opinion paper on the importance of user participation in the (transnational) development and implementation of digital mental health. The project team has held weekly online meetings to stay on course with the project.

Deliverables:

Joint guideline development / The aim of this activity is to create joint guidelines, which will be based on existing knowledge within the consortium and a literature search. These will give insights on how to set-up and facilitate (transnational) end-user involvement in the development and implementation of mental health applications.
Data collection transnational scaling of SAM and SAFE app / Activity 1's guidelines are subsequently applied to 2 regional tandem-pilots (in DK & NL) in which 2 existing smartphone applications (Dutch SAM app & Danish Digital Selfhelp for suicidal thoughts) from within the consortium will be translated and adapted to local contexts, involving end-users. During the pilots, data will be collected of all steps involved, to evaluate and optimize the process. Using the Open Science Framework (OSF) this (raw) data will be made available to a wide audience.
Dissemination of pilot results / After pilot data collection the results will be communicated in a scientific report to disseminate across knowledge institutions as well in a general report for mental health care organisations, patient federations, SME's/companies and professionals. This report will be disseminated using social media, relevant journals and other communication formats used in the project.
Online communication / We are in contact with our stakeholders by Linkedin (once every 4-6 weeks e.g. testimonials recorded at the kick off), News letters every 3 months, kick off and closure event and organised webinar(s)
Public events / The consortium will organise two public events for the target groups (entrepreneurs/SMEs, mental health organizations, patient federations, knowledge institutions), one at the start and at the end of the project. Those events will be hybrid (physical event in Amersfoort and Odense, also accessible via streaming), in order to reach as much as possible interested stakeholders from the wider North Sea Region (beyond the partnership).
Expert pool / We will create an expert pool with at least 50 SME's mental health organizations, university's and patient federations to give feedback on the guidelines and to engage in the uptake of the guideline afterwards. In local and European countries.
