Relevant linked projects:
- Reconect – H2020 (EN) | RECONECT (2018-2023) stands for Regenerating Ecosystems with Nature-based Solutions for Hydro-meteorological Risk Reduction. This H2020 project aims to enhance risk reduction by demonstrating, referencing and upscaling large scale NbS in rural and Natural areas.
- Reconect is creating a framework to support co-creation and collaboration for effective use of NbS. This knowledge can be used and built further in ResiRiver for the development of the mainstreaming solutions that will be developed in SO/WP 1. Associated organisation IUCN, is a partner in Reconect, and can provide insights on the project and its findings during the knowledge exchange events to be organised in ResiRiver SO/WP 2. (EN), MANABAS COAST – Interreg NS (EN) | The Interreg North Sea project MANABAS COAST (2022-2027) stands for -MAinstreaming NAture BAsed Solutions through COASTal systems.
- MANABAS COAST aims to mainstream nature-based solutions as the approach for coastal works. To accomplish this, a generic framework for mainstreaming will be developed including regional NbS implementation strategies. This will be based on an analysis of the impact of on-the-ground pilot experiments on the enabling factors. Learning activities for future and current professionals and decision-makers will promote capacity building. ResiRiver has a similar objective, though focussing on river systems and choosing an approach that is more practice oriented. The framework development of MANABAS COAST can be of use for the development of the assessment for the pilots and the plans and guidelines in SO/WP3 of ResiRiver.
- Learning tools that will be developed in MANABAS can serve as a source of inspiration for the training scheme to be developed in ResiRiver
- Rijkswaterstaat is Lead Partner in MANABAS COAST. Members of the ResiRiver team are also involved in the MANABAS Coast project, providing options for continuous knowledge exchange. Simultaneously, knowledge sharing is possible via the knowledge exchange events in ResiRiver, but also by participating in MANABAS COAST Events.
- (EN), MERLIN - H2020 (EN) | The HORIZON 2020 project MERLIN (2021-2025) stands for Mainstreaming Ecological Restoration of freshwater-related ecosystems in a Landscape context: Innovation, upscaling and transformation.
- MERLIN will demonstrate best practices for freshwater restoration. Bringing together 44 partners from across Europe, including universities, research institutes and nature conservation organisations, as well as stakeholders for businesses, governments and municipalities.
- MERLIN promotes ecosystem restoration using nature-based solutions (NbS) as key to this counter aggravating effects of climate change, in which freshwaters hold a pivotal role. MERLIN works by measuring the strengths and weaknesses to mainstream and upscale Nature based solutions. ResiRiver can use this knowledge in the detailed choice of mainstreaming activities in the pilots.
- Rijkswaterstaat and associated partner BfG are working in MERLIN and knowledge transfer for this purpose is possible by directly connecting to the learning platform of MERLIN. (EN), Adapto – LIFE (EN) | Initiated by the Conservatoire du littoral, Adapto (2027-2021) was a project supported by the European Union through the LIFE program. Adapto explores solutions to the impacts of climate change on the coast, like sea level rise and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
- Adapto carried out a transversal approach by doing biodiversity monitoring, economic analysis and social perception study. Our project can learn from this and understand the economic benefits and social perception at the NbS sites that can help in mainstreaming.
- Knowledge transfer about the project will be possible via CPIE, SYMSAGEL, VNF, and RWS. (EN), LIFE IP Artisan (EN) | The overall ambition of the LIFE IP Artisan (2019-2027) project is to increase the resilience of the country of France to climate change, by reinforcing French national adaptation to the impacts of climate change. LIFE IP Artisanwill contribute to the achievement of objectives set in the second national climate adaptation plan and future plans. To this end, the project will seek to generalise the use of NbS wherever appropriate by 2030. This aligns with the objective of ResiRiver.
- ResiRiver can make specific use of Artisan in the creation of plans, programmes and guidelines in SO 3. CPIE can create good connections between the projects. (EN), C5A - Interreg NSR (EN) | In the Interreg NSR project C5a (2019-2022) with lead partner RWS, government authorities, practitioners, and researchers have developed a cloud to coast approach (C2C). This approach promotes the adoption of a whole system and long-term perspective to climate change adaptation that is purposeful, collaborative and builds on the principles of social justice, ecosystem health and resilience. The C2C approach has resulted in four policy insights which are essential for a flood resilient society. These insights call for a shift away from the ‘defence’ paradigm to break the tendency to treat flood resilience and liveability as rivals. In the new paradigm, NbS and sustainability will be at the centre of flood risk management. NbS not only mitigate flood impacts, but also improve the quality of spaces. By doing so, adaptation can become a driver to add value to public and green spaces. ResiRiver builds upon the collaboration and the insights from C5a. (EN), Building with Nature (BwN) - Interreg NSR (EN) | The Interreg NSR project Building with Nature (BwN) (2014-2020) has contributed to the development of a strong evidence base for the implementation of NbS in coastal and riverine areas. The BwN project delivered a white paper for mainstreaming NbS, called ISBAM: Integrated System based Asset Management. Here, a set of enablers for mainstreaming NbS are introduced. The challenges identified in ResiRiver match with the identified enablers:
- - Technology and system knowledge
- - Multi-stakeholder approach
- - Management, monitoring and maintenance
- - Institutional embedding
- - Business Case
- - Capacity building
- RWS can ensure that knowledge gained in BwN will be transferred to ResiRiver via the knowledge platform and exchange events in WP 2. (EN), Biodiverse Cities - Interreg North Sea (EN) | Biodiverse Cities (2022 - 2026) aims to accelerate action for biodiversity to transform NSR cities into nature-inclusive societies: cities where nature and people can thrive. This Interreg North Sea project implements Biodiverse NBS in 5 pilot cities and plan their replication in 3 pollinator cities. Pilots cover all city areas (densely built centres, peri-urban etc.) to understand what works where and to deliver high quality green spaces. The City of Dordrecht is lead partner of Biodiverse Cities.
- ResiRiver is well-positioned to exploit synergies with Biodiverse Cities (via the City of Dordrecht), and to make use of their outputs. These include innovative community engagement methods, like spatial experimentation, social design, community activities to increase nature connectedness and improve wellbeing. (EN), Federal Programme Blue Belt Germany (BBD) (EN) | The Federal Programme Blue Belt Germany is a joint initiative of the ministries of Transport and Environment. This programme is of particular interest for WSV.
- The aim is to restore waterways and their floodplains, and to create a coherent biotope network on German waterways. Habitats for endangered species are protected and restored. At the same time, the measures are enhancing flood prevention and recreation.
- ResiRiver supports the aims of the BBD by providing a plan for NbS (bank protection) in SO 3, which are valuable for the promotion of native species, adaption to climate change and recreation. Defining standards for alternative bank protection will help to accelerate measures of the BBD, which include those. (EN)
