Description (EN):

Among the main challenges identified in the European Climate Law is achieving climate neutrality of the entire land sector by 2035. Effective means to reach this target follow a water-energy-food security nexus approach. This is also in line with the principles of sustainable land management, and practices that are responding to the challenge by helping to gradually increase the capture of CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in the long term in ecosystems. Those practices also foster the restoration of the environment and contribute to a more resilient and fair exploitation of the land for local communities. The general objective of CARBON FARMING MED is to develop a resilient Mediterranean agriculture system and to help farmers to implement carbon farming as a new green business model to obtain additional revenues (e.g., voluntary market of carbon credits, CAP funding, etc.), optimizing regenerative agricultural and agroforestry practices and providing the necessary tools to facilitate the carbon credits’ market adoption (from seller and buyer perspectives), through: 1. Establishing a theoretical framework of carbon farming in the Mediterranean 2. Quantifying carbon capture in the soil and avoided GHG emissions 3. Promoting a Mediterranean market of carbon credits generated by regenerative agriculture 4. Transferring and mainstreaming the project results and lessons learned The above requires a cross-border approach that brings Mediterranean carbon buyers and sellers together to benefit from a common market of carbon credits. The CARBON FARMING MED will be the first platform of its kind in the region, allowing to buy and sell carbon credits, while offering a tool that helps farms with the verification process, by capitalising on existing models and best practices and creating a carbon farming framework in the Mediterranean. This will tackle the joint challenge of enabling the EU to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, through carbon removals. In the Fast Lane transfer phase, the project has the potential to support the transfer and uptake of its solutions to new territories, including Emilia-Romagna (Italy) and North Macedonia and a macro-regional dimension mobilisation of eligible countries by Interreg Euro MED area, such as Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia and Croatia. This approach would strengthen the geographical reach of the project, facilitating wider replication of carbon farming solutions and enhancing knowledge transfer, policy uptake and practical implementation across different regional contexts in Europe.

Parmi les principaux défis identifiés dans la loi européenne sur le climat figure la neutralité climatique de l'ensemble du secteur foncier d'ici 2035. Pour atteindre cet objectif, les mesures à mettre en place doivent suivre une approche associant eau, énergie et sécurité alimentaire. Cette approche correspond aux principes de la gestion durable des terres et aux pratiques qui y contribuent en augmentant progressivement le captage à long terme du CO2 de l'atmosphèredans les écosystèmes. En outre, elle favorise la restauration de l'environnement et participe à une exploitation plus résiliente et équitable des terres par les communautés locales. L'objectif général de CARBON FARMING MED est de développer un système agricole méditerranéen résilient et d'aider les agriculteurs à mettre en œuvre l'agriculture carbone comme un nouveau modèle de gestion écologique permettant d'obtenir des revenus supplémentaires, d'optimiser les pratiques agricoles et agroforestières régénératrices et de fournir les outils nécessaires à l'adoption d'un marché des crédits carbone (vendeur et acheteur) grâce à: 1. La création d'un cadre théorique de l'agriculture carbone en Méditerranée 2. La quantification de la capture du carbone dans le sol et des émissions de GES évitées 3. La promotion d'un marché méditerranéen des crédits carbone générés par l'agriculture régénérative 4. Le transfert des résultats du projet Tout cela nécessite une approche transfrontalière réunissant acheteurs et vendeurs en Méditerranée pour qu'ils puissent tirer profit d'un marché commun de crédits carbone. CARBON FARMING MED sera la première plateforme de ce type dans la région qui permettra d'une part d'acheter et de vendre des crédits carbone et d'autre par d'aider les exploitations dans le processus de vérification en capitalisant sur les modèles et les bonnes pratiques existants, créant ainsi un cadre pour l'agriculture carbone en Méditerranée qui permettra à l'UE d'atteindre la neutralité climatique d'ici 2050.

Actual Achievements (EN):

During the first reporting period, all consortium members actively participated in meetings organized by the coordination team, including the first consortium meeting (February 1st) and the KoM developed in Vic, Spain (February 19th - March 1st). Additionally, members took part in key coordination events such as the ISE MED Innovation Day in France (June 2024), the 7th EURAF Congress in the Czech Republic (May 2024), and the 1st European Carbon Farming Summit in Spain (March 2024). A total of 32 technical meetings were also held between consortium members, either coordinated by the lead or requested by partners (see project calendar on Basecamp). The presentation of the Carbon Farming Projects Catalogue (D4.1, June 2024) has been a key resource for establishing connections with other ongoing European-funded projects, (It was developed a bilateral meeting with Life Carbon Farming project, led by the Institut de l'Elevage, France- April 2024). It has also helped to develop a shortlist institutions and project coordinators for conforming the Advisory Board (invitations sent). The project's communication strategy, developed by IHE in close collaboration with EMP (June 2024, see WP4 on Basecamp), serves as a guide to enhance communication efficiency and stakeholder engagement. Additionally, the official website and social media accounts (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram) were launched in June 2024 to expand the project's visibility and encourage community involvement. The open call inviting Spanish and Italian farmers to join the project's pilot farms was published on the project’s website and social media channels (July 2024). This resulted in significant interest from both countries. Over the next 6-7 months, the selection process will be conducted to identify farms that meet the call's eligibility criteria. Following this, agreements will be signed, and technical recognition visits will commence. Finally, the Carbon Footprint Assessment and Offsetting Guidelines (D.4.8.1) were developed by CENER 21 to assist partners in understanding and utilizing the ZEROCO2Med tool (Activity 4.8 - Carbon Footprint Assessment and Offsetting). A meeting was held with the entire consortium to explain the process of data collection for each reporting period, ensuring all members are aligned on the methodology. In WP1, the following progress was made: UVIC completed the Report on Carbon Farming as a Business Model (A1.1 and D1.1), which was reviewed, approved by partners, and submitted to the JS. IHE began A1.2 in month 3, analyzing MRV requirements and standards, forming the basis for further research. CREA started A1.3 in month 1, with the report (D1.3 – June 2024) expected by the second period's end. CREA also initiated A1.4, developing a SOC estimation model for the Mediterranean region's agroclimatic conditions. WP2 focused on defining criteria for regenerative agriculture and agroforestry practices. Led by AZOLLA (A2.1) with support from CREA, TUC, EURAF, UVIC, and IHE, the D2.1 document (June 2024) was developed, forming the basis for the open call. CREA and AZOLLA actively encouraged local farmer participation, while IHE led a coordination meeting to synchronize efforts The key activities of WP3, led by UVIC, included the A3.1 report on the "Definition of Functionalities and Requirements to Develop the Carbon Farming MED Tool" (D3.1 – June 2024). Several technical meetings with partners were conducted to identify the minimum technical requirements for the MRV system and to define the core functionalities of the tool. Activity 3.2 commenced in month 4, though additional technical meetings are planned to finalize the frontend programming, aiming to prevent significant changes in the upcoming months. In WP A4.1, led by EUROREGIO, the focus was on identifying existing European carbon farming projects to leverage available data and foster synergies. The European Carbon Farming Projects Catalogue (D4.1 - June 2024) was presented and thoroughly reviewed by the partners involved (IHE, CENER 21, CRITT, UVIC, AZOLLA). Learning pathways and potential collaborations were identified, including the recommendation to involve leaders from similar projects in the advisory board. In A4.4, IHE drafted the communication strategy with significant input from Euroregio, which also contributed to the development of communication tools such as the project poster, institutional website, and project website. Under A4.8, CENER 21 developed an Excel tool for carbon footprint assessment and provided training on its use, with all partners completing the file to test the tool's functionality. During the second reporting period, the Carbon Farming MED project made substantial progress across all work packages, focusing on research, pilot testing, digital platform development, communication, and project management. WP1 Significant efforts advanced research on Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) standards at global, EU, and national levels. A review of CO₂ offsetting platforms assessed real-world MRV applications and challenges. These findings form the basis for a tailored MRV framework adapted to Mediterranean carbon farming practices in the next phase. Carbon farming practice selection identified agroforestry and regenerative agriculture as the most suitable approaches for the region. Predictive soil sequestration models were adapted to assess carbon storage potential under Mediterranean conditions. A Soil Sampling Protocol was developed to ensure data collection consistency across pilot farms, alongside testing RothC soil carbon sequestration models. A preliminary review of techno-economic models for agro-system performance led to drafting the methodology for Activity A1.5. Collaboration strengthened research integration, aligning with project goals. Deliverable D3.1: Selection of Best-Suited Carbon Farming Actions was successfully completed. To enhance Output 1.1, a proposal was approved to postpone delivery to the next period, ensuring it fully incorporates WP1 findings and Mediterranean stakeholder needs. WP2 Fieldwork intensified, assessing and implementing pilot testing activities across multiple Mediterranean sites. Site visits in Spain and Italy evaluated farm characteristics, land access, and production types, providing the foundation for selecting sampling plots and standardizing field data collection. From October to December 2024, systematic soil sampling followed Chronosequence and Contrasting Land Use approaches. Samples are undergoing laboratory analysis to determine carbon content and sequestration potential. Pilot farms implementing agroforestry and regenerative agriculture were monitored for carbon sequestration performance and economic feasibility. A combination of modeling and direct measurement techniques assessed their impact, contributing to project objectives. WP3 A major milestone was the continued development of the Carbon Farming MED digital platform, a key tool for farmers, researchers, and policymakers. Work advanced on frontend and backend functionalities, integrating complex data processing with a user-friendly interface. A prototype user interface (MOOC in Figma) was designed to collect farmer data on Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The platform's architecture supports carbon removal project development aligned with certification schemes like Verra and the International Carbon Registry (ICR). Backend development established a secure login and registration system. Preliminary soil carbon accumulation modeling using the CAST model yielded initial results, presented at the Soil Health: Current Status and Future Needs conference in Chania, Greece. WP4 Efforts focused on strengthening visibility, fostering stakeholder engagement, and ensuring smooth administration. A key achievement was establishing the Advisory Board (AB), with its first formal meeting scheduled for January 2025, bringing together external members, associated partners, and the steering committee. A Framework for Effective Project Communication was developed to streamline information sharing. Communication materials included a project roll-up and a promotional video (pending approval). The project actively participated in national, European, and Mediterranean-level events, including: - 1st European Carbon Farming Summit (Valencia, Spain) – presenting to a European audience. - Simposio Internacional del Carbono en México (Online) – presenting to North American institutions. - CONAMA (National Congress of Environment, Spain) – presenting to a national audience. - ISE Community of Practice Gathering & MedTalks – engaging in knowledge-sharing discussions. Monthly technical and coordination meetings ensured partner alignment and Interreg project adherence. The Carbon Farming Projects Catalogue was expanded, identifying new initiatives and engaging key stakeholders for advisory board participation. Project sustainability efforts progressed in carbon footprint assessment, with data collection and submission compliant with reporting guidelines. Preparations for the EuroMED Academy & Community Activities began, with an initial work plan and content gathering. Request to delay Output O.1.1 Regarding O.1.1, after reviewing project progress, it was determined that delivering this output in Period 3, after WP1 completion, would be more appropriate. This adjustment ensures the framework incorporates consolidated results, enhancing quality and applicability. The Project Officer was officially informed on 30/01/2025. . During the third reporting period, the Carbon Farming Med project advanced significantly in administrative, technical, and dissemination activities. The consortium successfully postponed the delivery of Output 1.1 to June 2025 to ensure integration of all WP1 results. On the technical side, WP1 advanced the Carbon Farming Framework, delivering progress on documents, models, and databases: a conventional agriculture baseline scenario, statistical tools in R, and a database of over 100 studies assessing carbon farming externalities. WP2 completed soil analyses and advanced farm diagnostics across Spain and Italy, developing a standardized farmer description form to harmonize data collection. WP3 progressed with the integration of Roth C into the IT platform, including tools for farm polygon uploads and interface development. WP4 strengthened dissemination, expanding LinkedIn outreach, producing educational content, and initiating synergies with projects such as Carbonica, LILAS4Soil, and IRISCC. The first Advisory Board meeting provided constructive feedback and fostered synergies. The consortium also prepared contributions to major events (EU Carbon Farming Summit, Bioeconomy Congress, Eurosoil 2025), strengthening policy links and Mediterranean-wide collaboration. The CARBON FARMING MED project is advancing practical solutions to increase soil carbon storage and sustainability in Mediterranean agriculture. By combining scientific research, field experimentation, digital innovation, and strong collaboration between partners, the project is building a solid foundation for carbon farming systems adapted to Mediterranean conditions. A major milestone was the completion of Work Package 1, which established the scientific and methodological framework for carbon farming in the region. This work adapted existing European approaches to Mediterranean climatic conditions, soils, and farming systems. The framework identifies the best available agricultural practices—particularly regenerative agriculture and agroforestry—and evaluates their environmental, economic, and social impacts. It also defines methods for monitoring, reporting, and verifying carbon sequestration, which are essential for credible carbon credit systems. As part of this effort, a techno‑economic model was developed to assess the financial viability of regenerative farms, explicitly accounting for the potential revenues from carbon credits as well as the certification and monitoring costs associated with their generation. In addition, the project assessed the possitive externalities delivered by the improved practices such as such as improved soil health, biodiversity, water retention, and greater resilience for rural communities. Building on this foundation, the project moved from theory to practice through pilot farms across the Mediterranean. Soil sampling campaigns measured soil organic carbon and other key indicators such as nutrient content, and texture. Analyses conducted in laboratories in Italy and Spain show promising results: soils under regenerative management are accumulating carbon and can continue to do so even 10–15 years after the transition from conventional agriculture. Further studies show that much of this carbon is stored in stable soil fractions, contributing to long-term carbon sequestration while improving soil quality and productivity. To complement field data, advanced modelling tools have been used to simulate soil carbon dynamics across Mediterranean farming systems, helping estimate the long-term climate benefits of different agricultural practices. Following the positive externalities identified in WP1, the consortium also agreed to conduct a preliminary assessment of soil microbiological diversity, which will be carried out during the spring of 2026 to deepen understanding of the ecological impacts of regenerative management. Another key achievement is the development of the CARBON FARMING MED IT platform, designed to support the monitoring, reporting, and verification of carbon farming practices. The platform integrates predictive soil carbon models with farm-level data, enabling farmers and project developers to estimate carbon sequestration potential. The system is currently being tested using real farm data to improve its reliability and usability. In parallel, the project is exploring the creation of a Mediterranean carbon credit hub to connect farmers generating carbon credits with potential buyers and support transparent regional carbon markets. Knowledge transfer and stakeholder engagement are also central to the project. The EuroMed Academy, an online training programme, will provide practical guidance for public authorities, farmers, and other stakeholders through short video lessons and learning materials on carbon farming practices and monitoring approaches. Communication activities—including newsletters, social media, press releases, and participation in conferences—have further increased the visibility of the project and facilitated exchanges with other European initiatives. Overall, CARBON FARMING MED has successfully progressed from framework development to practical testing and digital implementation. Early results confirm the potential of carbon farming practices to increase soil carbon storage while delivering environmental and economic benefits. Through collaboration, research, and stakeholder engagement, the project is laying the groundwork for the wider adoption of carbon farming across the Mediterranean and supporting agriculture’s contribution to climate mitigation and sustainable rural development.

ZeroCO2MED – Transition towards climate-neutral Interreg MED projects 2021-2022 (Interreg MED programme 2014-2020).
ZeroCO2MED project emerged due to the growing need to evaluate the performance of public funded projects, not only in terms of scientific outputs but also from a sustainable perspective. To this end, ZeroCO2MED aims to estimate the project’s carbon emissions and, therefore, their current and future contribution to achieve climate neutrality. ZeroCO2MED intends to move forward on quantifying and monitoring sustainability and advance on how public funded projects can support territories achieving, at the same time, the targets set in the EU Green Deal.
The main outputs of ZeroCO2MED project will be: (i) the development of a carbon footprint accounting/mitigation/compensation methodology covering WHO, HOW, WHEN and WHAT to measure when assessing the carbon Footprint of projects and (ii) a user-friendly software that includes the accounting methodology and tools to facilitate the decision-making process for the implementation of cost-effective carbon footprint mitigation strategies and high-quality options to offset the remaining emissions.
The results obtained will help to understand the project’s carbon emissions and their current and future contribution to achieve climate neutrality. ZeroCO2MED will be a leap forward on how sustainability is integrated at the heart of INTERREG MED projects and how their outputs can support territories as well as national and regional policies to achieve the targets set in the EU Green Deal ZeroCO2MED is formed by highly qualified and transdisciplinary partnership covering all required fields of expertise (e.g., greenhouse gases emissions, methodology development, optimization of environmental performance, programming and modelling as well as skills in communication and training). The goal of the LIFE Carbon Farming Scheme project is to identify and accelerate the development and adoption of novel incentives for carbon sequestration and the increase and maintenance of the organic carbon stock in soil and biomass in Europe.
State-of-the-art science provides the baseline and backbone for the project in determining the practical methods in farming and forestry which could be included in the incentive schemes and qualify for result-based payment. The project will build and test incentive schemes relying on the available verification methods for carbon stocks in soil and biomass. Further critical considerations are the stability of the stock, carbon leakage and, with particular relevance for marketable carbon credits, additionality – the true increase in the carbon stock compared to business-as-usual. The project also maintains that the measures have to be sustainable also in terms of their overall environmental and socio-economic impacts.
The project will engage practitioners as well as authorities and other competent actors to test and evaluate the proposed incentives as well as their scalability across different pedo-climatic zones in Europe. With the aim of promoting a well-functioning voluntary carbon market complementing the regulated climate actions, the project will uncover the key factors in supply and demand and outline measures to invite the private sector to accelerate climate action.
The results of the project will be fed into the development of the EU agricultural and climate policies. (EN), EU Life Project “Carbon Farming Scheme” (2020-2022)

The goal of TRANSITION is to pave the way towards a resilient agriculture in the Mediterranean Region, maximizing positive impacts on the environment while increasing resilience of agroecosystems and rural societies. This is done by analysing the most relevant innovative solutions in resilient agroforestry and mixed farming systems using a participatory approach.
TRANSITION will identify appropriate strategies to: (i) improve resilience of the agriculture sector, (ii) establish what are the environmental and socio-economic barriers to resilient agriculture implementation, (iii) quantify the delivery of ecosystem services and empower the expansion of agroforestry and mixed farming systems through practical innovation and knowledge exchange, and (iv) provide robust information, useful for administrations in terms of measurable impacts and possible transition scenarios.
The power of TRANSITION is to begin with a large base of existing systems and improve understanding and increase the resilience of those with innovative strategies, with interventions at the farm (“bottom-up”) and policy levels (“top-down”). The project focuses on two agricultural systems: agroforestry and mixed farming systems, across a range of cultural and pedo-climatic conditions in 5 Mediterranean regions in Spain, Italy, Algeria, Egypt, and France. The study regions are Catalonia (Spain), Sétif (Algeria), Sicily (Italy), the Behia and Kafr Elsheihk Governates of Egypt, and Southwest France, for a total of three regions in the North Mediterranean and two in the South.

FERTIlisers from animal MANURE (2020 – 2023) (HORIZON 2020)
FERTIMANURE develop, integrate, test and validate innovative Nutrient Management Strategies to efficiently recover mineral nutrients and other products with agronomic value from manure, to finally obtain reliable and safe fertilisers that can compete in the EU fertilizers market. FERTIMANURE focuses on “How to improve the agronomic use of recycled nutrients from livestock manure” to reconnect nutrient flows between plant and livestock production. Nutrient recycling relies not only in the technologies for producing bio-based fertilisers, but also in a better understanding and managing nutrients at the farm. The ambition of FERTIMANURE is to cover both technological approach for nutrient recovery and nutrient management. To this end, the technological approach will be covered by the implementation of 5 innovative & integrated nutrient recovery on-farm experimental pilots in the most relevant European countries in terms of livestock production (Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands), whereas the nutrient management will be addressed through 3 different strategies adapted to mixed and specialised farming systems: (Strategy #1) On-farm production and use of Bio-Based Fertilisers (BBF), (Strategy #2) On-farm BBF production and Centralised Tailor-Made Fertilisers (TMF) production and (Strategy #3) On-farm TMF production and use. MEDISEC is an Interreg Euro-MED Thematic Community Project under Mission 1. It aims at strengthening innovative sustainable economy (ISE) in the Mediterranean region by developing and enhancing research and innovation capacities for the uptake of technologies in order to support the transition to a circular economy and consolidate a competitive innovation ecosystem with the 4-helix stakeholders. Therefore, MEDISEC acts as an engaged and structured community that improves collaboration among projects, stakeholders and relevant institutions to find solutions for common challenges and promote the transfer of novel practices to other actors and territories for their integration into policies and strategies. MEDISEC main outputs comprise the activation of a Community of Practice as a process of collective knowing and learning among projects through transnational cooperation, as well as a Hub aiming to establish a strong and multi-sectorial network in the field of ISE to amplify synergies and facilitate the replicability of solutions in the whole Mediterranean region. Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

TerritorialAgenda2030 The Territorial Agenda 2030 provides an action-oriented framework to promote territorial cohesion in Europe. The CARBON FARMING MED project addresses the importance of well-functioning and resilient ecosystems for an adaptation to climate change impacts, and the essential role of integrated management and cooperation beyond administrative boundaries. It contributes directly to the following priorities:
- Healthy environment: Better ecological livelihoods, climate-neutral and resilient towns, cities and regions
- Balanced Europe: better balanced territorial development utilising Europe’s diversity
- Circular Economy: strong and sustainable local economies in a globalised world
- Functional Regions: convergent local and regional development, less inequality between places
The project will also clearly strengthen the following actions foreseen in the Territorial Agenda 2030:
- multi-level governance
- place-based approaches
- coordinated sector policy territorial impacts and coherence
- cooperation between territories
- territorial cohesion at European level
- territorial cohesion at cross-border, transnational, inter- and intra-regional level
- Member State and neighbouring country contributions to territorial cohesion.
EuropeanGreenDeal The European Green Deal is the EU’s growth model and response plan to climate change and environmental degradation. To overcome these challenges, the European Green Deal will transform the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy. The project will contribute to different key areas of the EU Green Deal, especially:
1. “Climate neutral” Europe. This is the overarching objective of the European Green Deal. The EU will aim to reach net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, a goal that has been enshrined in the European Climate Law (Regulation (EU) 2021/1119). CARBON FARMING MED will directly contribute to this objective through the development of a Mediterranean Market of carbon credits, which will contribute to balancing GHG emissions from all land, livestock and fertiliser use through sustainable land management practices, which will increase the capture of CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in ecosystems.
2. Circular Economy. This is another main objective of the European Green Deal and will be tackled through the EU circular economy action plan. This action plan aims to:
- make sustainable products the norm in the EU
- empower consumers and public buyers
- focus on the sectors that use most resources and where the potential for circularity is high
- ensure less waste
- make circularity work for people, regions and cities
- lead global efforts on circular economy
CARBON FARMING MED will directly contribute to the circular economy action plan through the optimization of regenerative agricultural practices in a Mediterranean context and promote a circular model of carbon credits in the Mediterranean.
Other Biodiversity Strategy:
The EU’s biodiversity strategy for 2030 aims to put Europe's biodiversity on a path to recovery by 2030 and contains specific actions and commitments. A core part of the European Green Deal, it will also support a green recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic. The strategy aims to put Europe’s biodiversity on the path to recovery by 2030 for the benefit of people, climate and the planet.
As stated in the Biodiversity Strategy, “restoring forests, soils and wetlands and essential to achieve the climate change mitigation needed by 2030”, which is why this project will directly contribute to some of the objectives indicated in the strategy. One of the ways of restoring degraded ecosystems at land across the whole of Europe will be by increasing organic farming and biodiversity-rich landscape features on agricultural land.
Therefore, the implementation of regenerative agricultural techniques in the Mediterranean region will directly contribute to the biodiversity strategy and its goals. Regenerative agriculture focuses on increasing biodiversity, strengthening the health of farm soil and topsoil regeneration.
Other EU Adaptation Strategy:
The European Commission adopted its new EU strategy on adaptation to climate change on 24 February 2021. The new strategy sets out how the European Union can adapt to the unavoidable impacts of climate change and become climate resilient by 2050. The Strategy has four principal objectives: to make adaptation smarter, swifter and more systemic, and to step up international action on adaptation to climate change.
One of the focus areas of the strategy is promoting nature-based solutions for adaptation, in order to increase climate resilience and contribute to multiple Green Deal objectives.
In its Adaptation Strategy, the Commission commits to proposing nature-based solutions for carbon removals, including accounting and certification in upcoming farming initiatives; as well as to develop the financial aspects of nature-based solutions and foster the development of financial approaches and products that also cover nature-based adaptation.
CARBON FARMING MED directly contributes to the afore-mentioned focus areas of the strategy, through the implementation of regenerative agriculture techniques in Mediterranean agriculture, a nature-based solution to capturing carbon in soil.
Other Farm to Fork Strategy:
The Farm to Fork Strategy is at the heart of the Green Deal. It addresses comprehensively the challenges of sustainable food systems and recognises the inextricable links between healthy people, healthy societies, and a healthy planet.
Ensuring a sustainable livelihood for primary producers, who still lag in terms of income, is essential for the success of the recovery and the transition. The project directly contributes to this objective by helping these primary producers to develop a resilient agriculture system and to enter the carbon market. By doing this, the project directly contributes to the transition towards a sustainable food system that should:
- have a neutral or positive environmental impact
- help to mitigate climate change and adapt to its impacts
- reverse the loss of biodiversity
- ensure food security, nutrition, and public health, making sure that everyone has access to sufficient, safe, nutritious, sustainable food
- preserve affordability of food while generating fairer economic returns, fostering competitiveness of the EU supply sector, and promoting fair trade
Moreover, CARBON FARMING MED strengthens the interrelations between our health, ecosystems, supply chains, consumption patterns and planetary boundaries, which is at the core of the Farm to Fork strategy, through the creation of a transboundary carbon market.
Other Soil Strategy:
The EU soil strategy for 2030 sets out a framework and concrete measures to protect and restore soils and ensure that they are used sustainably. It sets a vision and objectives to achieve healthy soils by 2050, with concrete actions by 2030. It also contributes to the objectives set out in the European Green Deal. The project, through the development of a sustainable and resilient agriculture system, contributes to the following key actions set out in the strategy, as it strengthens the health and vitality of farm soil and focuses on topsoil regeneration:
- making sustainable soil management the new normal, by proposing a scheme for landowners to get their soils tested for free, promoting sustainable soil management through the CAP and sharing best practices
- increasing research, data and monitoring on soil
- mobilising the necessary societal engagement and financial resources
It also clearly contributes to the EU soil strategy main objectives:
- all EU soil ecosystems are healthy and more resilient and can therefore continue to provide their crucial services
- there is no net land take and soil pollution is reduced to levels that are no longer harmful to people’s health or ecosystems
- protecting soils, managing them sustainably and restoring degraded soils is a common standard
Other Soil Deal for Europe:
The main goal of the Mission 'A Soil Deal for Europe' is to establish 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils by 2030. The Mission will support the EU’s ambition to lead on global commitments, notably the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and contribute to the European Green Deal targets on sustainable farming, climate resilience, biodiversity and zero-pollution. It is also a flagship initiative of the long-term vision for rural areas.
CARBON FARMING MED contributes to the following mission objectives:
- conserve soil organic carbon stocks
- reduce soil pollution and enhance restoration
- prevent erosion
- improve soil structure to enhance soil biodiversity
- reduce the EU global footprint on soils
- improve soil literacy in society
Other Forest Strategy:
The new EU forest strategy for 2030 is one of the flagship initiatives of the European Green Deal and builds on the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030. The strategy will contribute to achieving the EU’s biodiversity objectives as well as greenhouse gas emission reduction target of at least 55% by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. It recognises the central and multifunctional role of forests, and the contribution of foresters and the entire forest-based value chain for achieving a sustainable and climate neutral economy by 2050 and preserving lively and prosperous rural areas.
CARBON FARMING MED mainly contributes to the “forests and climate” policy area, through the onset on carbon credits for Mediterranean forests. Areas such as agroforestry and integrated landscape management (including farming and animal husbandry) will be closely related to the outcomes of the projects and will be areas that will clearly benefit from the creation of a Mediterranean market of carbon credits.
Other Bioeconomy Strategy:
The bioeconomy strategy will accelerate the deployment of a sustainable European bioeconomy. CARBON FARMING MED mainly contributes to the strategy’s following goals:
- ensure food and nutrition security
- manage natural resources sustainably
- limit and adapt to climate change
The strategy contributes to the European Green Deal, as well as industrial, circular economy and clean energy innovation strategies. They all highlight the importance of a sustainable, circular bioeconomy to achieve their objectives.
The project will also contribute to the following actions of the strategy:
- Strengthen and scale up the biobased sectors, unlock investments and markets
- mobilise stakeholders in developing and deploying sustainable biobased solutions
- promote education, training and skills across the bioeconomy
- enhance knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystems
- enhance the benefits of biodiversity in primary production
Other Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas:
The long-term Vision for the EU's rural areas aims to address those challenges and concerns, by building on the emerging opportunities of the EU's green and digital transitions and on the lessons learnt from the COVID 19 pandemic, and by identifying means to improve rural quality of life, achieve balanced territorial development and stimulate economic growth.
The project will contribute the following areas of action envisaged by the Vision and Action:
- Stronger: focus on empowering rural communities, improving access to services and facilitating social innovation.
- Resilient: preserving natural resources and greening farming activities to counter climate change while also ensuring social resilience through offering access to training courses and diverse quality job opportunities.
- Prosperous: to diversify economic activities and improve the value added of farming and agri-food activities and agri-tourism.
Other Strategy to reduce methane emissions :
This strategy outlines a set of cross-sector and sector-specific actions to pursue significant reductions in methane emissions from the EU’s energy, agriculture, and waste management sectors and to promote further methane abatement efforts through international cooperation.
The project contributes to this strategy to reduce methane emissions through the development and implementation of sustainable land management practices in the Mediterranean region.
This strategy outlines a set of cross-sector and sector-specific actions to pursue significant reductions in methane emissions from the EU’s energy, agriculture, and waste management sectors and to promote further methane abatement efforts through international cooperation.
The project contributes to this strategy to reduce methane emissions through the development and implementation of sustainable land management practices in the Mediterranean region.
Other UfM Environment Agenda – 2030 GreenerMed Agenda:
With the 2nd UfM Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Climate Action (2021), the UfM countries agreed to advance cooperation and alignment on environment across the region.
The 42 UfM countries are committed to promoting a green, circular and socially inclusive economy, thus meaning providing real-life opportunities for preserving natural resources, facilitating job creation, improving the quality of life for all, and ensuring a sustainable future for the whole Mediterranean region. Lasting results can only be achieved by working together.
The UfM Environment Agenda for the Euro-Mediterranean region calls for a shift to sustainable consumption, management and production patterns; increasing resource efficiency; promoting nature-based solutions; and moving towards a circular approach. This is essential to address environmental degradation and climate change and shape a new future in harmony with nature.
The project directly promotes the UfM environment agenda by contributing to its following objectives:
1. Support the transition towards a green, circular, and socially inclusive economy
2. Prevent and reduce pollution on land, air
3. Protect, preserve, manage and restore natural resources in the Mediterranean region within an integrated ecosystem approach, including terrestrial, marine and coastal dimensions
Other Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe (COM (2011) 571):
The Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe (COM (2011) 571), part of the Resource Efficiency Flagship of the Europe 2020 Strategy, outlines how we can transform Europe’s economy into a sustainable one by 2050. It proposes ways to increase resource productivity and decouple economic growth from resource use and its environmental impact. Areas where policy action can make a real difference are a particular focus. Key resources are analysed from a life-cycle and value-chain perspective. A special focus is set on the nutrition, housing, and mobility sectors, responsible for most environmental impacts.
Through the implementation of regenerative agricultural practices, the project contributes to the following milestones to be reached by 2020:
- Scientific breakthroughs and sustained innovation efforts have dramatically improved how we understand, manage, reduce the use, reuse, recycle, substitute and safeguard and value resources. This has been made possible by substantial increases in investment, coherence in addressing the societal challenge of resource efficiency, climate change and resilience, and in gains from smart specialization and cooperation within the European research area.
- The loss of biodiversity in the EU and the degradation of ecosystem services will be halted and, as far as feasible, biodiversity will be restored.
- EU policies take into account their direct and indirect impact on land use in the EU and globally, and the rate of land take is on track with an aim to achieve no net land take by 2050; soil erosion is reduced and the soil organic matter increased, with remedial work on contaminated sites well underway.
- Incentives to healthier and more sustainable food production and consumption will be widespread and will have driven a 20% reduction in the food chain's resource inputs. Disposal of edible food waste should have been halved in the EU.
