Over the last decades, many inland areas across the Mediterranean have lost population, as people have moved to urban and coastal areas with more economic opportunities. These territories face common challenges, including limited economic activity, fewer public services, lack of job opportunities, weak digitalisation and poor accessibility, which make them more vulnerable. REVIVE addresses these challenges by promoting participation and capacity building. The project brings together stakeholders from public authorities, businesses, research organisations and civil society to strengthen cooperation, reinforce community cohesion, and co-design innovative solutions to shared challenges. Working across countries, partners will develop and test collaborative economic models through Innovative Community Cooperatives. These will create connected products and services to support existing value chains. The project will also co-design digital services and test advanced technologies through Mediterranean Digital Innovation Hubs, which will be integrated into a transnational network of cooperatives. This network will help create new business opportunities and encourage people to live, work and invest in these areas. In the final phase, the project will focus on transferring, replicating and scaling up results across Mediterranean regions, in line with Interreg priorities. A structured transfer framework will support the adaptation and uptake of solutions in different contexts. A “givers–receivers” approach will support this process: experienced territories will share tested solutions, methods and tools with other regions, enabling peer learning and capacity building. Particular attention will be given to adapting solutions to local social and economic needs and ensuring they are put into practice. Overall, REVIVE will support the long-term use of its results, strengthen cooperation across territories, and contribute to more competitive, innovative and resilient inland ecosystems in the Mediterranean area.

Au cours des dernières décennies, de nombreuses zones de l'arrière-pays méditerranéen ont connu un déclin démographique, la population s'étant déplacée vers les zones urbaines et côtières offrant davantage d'opportunités économiques. Ces territoires sont confrontés à des défis communs, notamment une activité économique limitée, une offre réduite de services publics, un manque d'opportunités d'emploi, une numérisation insuffisante et une accessibilité déficiente, ce qui les rend plus vulnérables. REVIVE s’attaque à ces défis en favorisant la participation et le renforcement des capacités. Le projet rassemble des acteurs issus des pouvoirs publics, des entreprises, des organismes de recherche et de la société civile afin de renforcer la coopération, de consolider la cohésion communautaire et de concevoir conjointement des solutions innovantes aux défis communs. Travaillant à l’échelle transnationale, les partenaires développeront et testeront des modèles économiques collaboratifs par le biais de coopératives communautaires innovantes. Celles-ci créeront des produits et services interconnectés afin de soutenir les chaînes de valeur existantes. Le projet co-concevra également des services numériques et testera des technologies de pointe par le biais de pôles d’innovation numérique méditerranéens, qui seront intégrés dans un réseau transnational de coopératives. Ce réseau contribuera à créer de nouvelles opportunités commerciales et encouragera les personnes à vivre, travailler et investir dans ces zones. Au cours de la phase finale, le projet se concentrera sur le transfert, la reproduction et la généralisation des résultats dans les régions méditerranéennes, conformément aux priorités d’Interreg. Un cadre de transfert structuré facilitera l’adaptation et l’adoption des solutions dans différents contextes.

Actual Achievements (EN):

The first phase of the project, was focused on defining a methodological framework for developing community based collaborative economy business models and enabling innovation processes in our pilot areas. The work started with a deep analysis of the pilot areas to understand the current situation, the challenges and problems they face and to identify the opportunities for collaboration and innovation. Based on a template provided by IPTPO (activity leader) a deep analysis of the pilot areas was done with information on the existing policies at the national/ regional level and on the characteristics of the pilot areas. A detailed mapping and description of the policies on rural development, tourism, creative industries, innovation (RIS), social and employment and any other policies that could be consider relevant (sustainable growth, climate change, etc.) in addressing the challenges of our pilot areas, have been identified and analysed. Then a detailed analysis of each pilot areas was conducted based on the following: 1) demography characteristics, 2) climatic information, 3) natural conditions (e.g. forests, plains, landscape), 4) cultural heritage, 5) infrastructure and mobility, 6) internet infrastructure and digital services, 7) economic analysis and collaboration and connections of various entities), 8) SWOT analysis of the pilot areas. All this detailed information has been gathered in a final deliverable D1.1.1 that includes all the analysis of the pilot areas as well as a summary of the analysis with mind maps that provide an overview of existing strategies and policies at the national, regional and local levels divided into pilot areas and pertains to one of the following fields: rural development and agriculture, tourism, creative industry, innovation, society and employment, and others. Also, a brief overview of the characteristic economic activities for each area as well as the number of business entities and employees in the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors. As a result this analysis, it provides insight into the common main features of the internal and external environment of the project's pilot areas. It is a document analysis that will help the pilot areas to develop a comprehensive action plans to implement an innovative business models in their areas and also work together based on the common challenges that they face. In parallel, the activity of exploiting the lessons learnt by past and ongoing projects and best practises was also done by all partners aiming to raise awareness about innovative and collaborative business models, measures and projects, sharing the good practices implemented in different countries, strengthening peer-to-peer learning and innovative development. Following the instructions of e-Zavod based on a template, all partners collected best practices for developing innovative business models based on three main drivers, that is innovation process, digitalization and technology and collaborative economy and also based on economic sectors, such as agriculture, production and trade of local products, tourism and culture, energy and infrastructures and mixed sectors. Deliverable 1.2.1 was drafted and shared with the partners. One of our main goals during the first period of the project was the engagement of the stakeholders from the beginning of the project. The process started with the identification of the relevant stakeholders and the organization of regional workshops in each pilot area to discuss the challenges, necessities and possible solutions that can be addressed in the pilot areas in the fields of agriculture, food production, tourism and cultural and creative industry. The results of the regional workshops, the analysis of the pilot areas and best practises and the framework for testing were detailed discussed during the meeting in Leros, Greece beginning of July before starting with the local pilot action plans process. We brough all the stakeholder's from the beginning together to exchange on their experiences, to get inspired from each other and to set the ground for future collaboration for the implementation of the pilot actions. The output O1.1 REVIVE Framework for pilot testing has been also reached since the final business model framework has been drafted that constitutes an operational instrument to favour innovation processes by promoting emergent community based on collaborative economy business models and uptake of advanced technologies. The model is unique for each area and it includes all the steps that guide pilot areas in defining a business model suitable for their area. The social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram) and the project website have been set up. Until project website was ready, dissemination was done through the social media. We presented the pilot areas, participation to events and the organization of regional workshops. In total we have 20 posts. Also, our poster and banner have been designed. The focus of the second semester of the project was on the establishment of the innovative community cooperatives in the 7 pilot areas as well as defining the potential digital services and advanced technologies to be implemented to the pilot areas in the next two periods. Partners, following the REVIVE business model framework developed on the first period as well as the set up of the stakeholder groups, established their innovation community cooperatives and drafted the relevant action plans that will be implemented in period 3 and 4. More specifically, at the beginning of the semester, the D2.1.1 Engagement and participatory process action plan (ANCI Toscana) was prepared to provide to the partners guidelines and a step by step process on how to engage and facilitate the participation of the local stakeholder groups, in different steps of co-design and implementation of the action plans in the 7 project pilot areas, leading to the establishment of the Innovative Community Cooperatives and the Digital Innovation Hubs and their subsequent merging into the transnational cluster of REVIVE communities. Also, in the D2.1.1, the REVIVE Pilot action plan template was included as well as the stakeholder list template and engagement calendar template that was filled by all partners with their activities (meetings, workshops, etc). All partners identified their local stakeholders and organize different meetings, workshops and events with the main aim to engage the local stakeholders and to work together to define the activities and draft the action plans. As a result, each pilot area has drafted its action plan (D2.2.1 - 7 Action Plans) that includes a brief description of the initial engagement process, a description of who is joining (or founding the innovation community cooperative), the economic sectors involved, the collaborative business model description, the activities, the monitoring and evaluation of the action plan as well as the economic sustainability and plans for the future. Another important activity for the second period was the setting up of the MED Digital innovation hubs (MDIHs) and digital laboratories in the pilot areas. Under the guidance of MCC, all partners have identified the DIHubs in their areas and already had the first communication with them as to establish cooperation for the capacity building activities (trainings in digital technologies). Also, all partners identified the initiatives related to technology applied to the sectors of the pilot areas. Based on discussions with the local stakeholders on the digital technologies and immersive experiences the partners pilot areas have identified the technologies that will implemented in their pilot areas and would bring improvements. This activities are also included in the action plans. For the Data Integration the data platform will be based on FIWARE (NADIA platform from AnySolution) that enables the collection and analysis of data from heterogeneous sources and formats and also allows for an easy visualisation and interpretation of data through dashboards. This activity will be starting in the next semester. The project website and social media have been updated on a regular basis. In this period we had more than 40 posts in our social media. The followers are as follow: Facebook 73, LinkedIn: 75 and Instagram: 36. All partners have contributed with news articles of their activities. Also, the project communication plan has been approved. The 2nd project meeting and study visit was organized at the beginning of the period in Leros, Greece (10-11 July 2024) with the participation of local stakeholders. Τhe results of the regional workshops, the analysis of the pilot areas and best practises and the framework for testing were detailed discussed. The stakeholders had the opportunity to meet and exchange on their experiences, to get inspired from each other and to set the ground for future collaboration for the implementation of the pilot actions. The 3rd project meeting was organized in Maribor, Slovenia (13-14/11/2024). The main aim of the meeting was the discussion of the next steps for the pilot areas action plans for the set up of the innovation community cooperatives and the implementation of the immersive experiences. Study visits were also organized for exchange of experience and inspiration for the partners. The focus of the 3rd semester was on the implementation of the Action Plans of the 7 pilot areas focusing on the ICC and the development of the immersive experiences: ANETEL: engaging stakeholders with several meetings and especially with the core group for the implementation of the action plan (setting up the ICC and identify the branding and communication for rural Larnaca). The immersive experience to be developed was agreed which is the creation of an interactive AI Avatar that will welcome visitors and respond in real time to questions about the pilot area highlighting also existing immersive experiences of rural Larnaca. CNR-ANCI: drafted the Charter of Values and analyse potential legal structures of the Food Community. They drafted the Statute and Articles of the Association (signed by 12 members) and registered officially the Pistoia Mountain Food Community. They design a logo and visual identity, develop an official website for the Food Community, create promotional materials and defined a targeted communication strategy. They customized training sessions on digital marketing and immersive technologies and started the process for the immersive experiences (360 VR Videos). IPTPO: engage stakeholders with relevant meetings and discussions for creating a digital solution. They further encourage local participation by organising the event ‘Study visit Istria’, bring together project partners and their stakeholders. The 1st digital workshop was organised aiming to involve stakeholders in the co-creation process of the b2b platform. Further, they collaborated with EDIH Adria and drafted the Digitalisation Action Plan. IPTPO started to design their digital solution. MCC-AETIB: develop and assess the feasibility of the ideas contained in the Local Action. AETIB did benchmarking research on existing B2B platforms in the Balearic Islands used by hotel chains to purchase local foods and decided to support an already existing platform that promotes the commercialisation of local products among the tourist sectors. Also, they have assessed funding possibilities as well as the willingness of producers and tourist businesses in the pilot area to join the platform. They had several meetings (16) with stakeholders to ensure coordination, long-term sustainability, and adoption of the solution. Further, they advanced in the organization of the digital laboratories, by defining 4 training sessions and organized the 1st international course “Digital Innovation Hubs: an introduction” that took place on 2nd of July. SWG-RRD: started promoting honey production, local products and natural and cultural heritage of the pilot area. Trainings and workshops were organized ion cooperation, LAGs, leadership, advantages and disadvantages of cooperatives. Also, they started to test the application of drones in agriculture by mapping and prescription map creation to showcase the potential use in agriculture activities. Also, they decided to develop a prototype for monitoring the behavior of the bees in the beehive. e-Zavod: started the implementation of the Local Action Plan for the area of Slovenske gorice through a participatory co-design process involving local stakeholders. They started the process for the establishment of the Slovenske Gorice Experience Cooperative (SGX Coop), a community-led platform aiming to develop sustainable and experiential tourism, promote digital innovation, and strengthen local entrepreneurship. Also, they launched a Digital Innovation Hub and operationalised a digital lab in Slovenske gorice. Five tailored training modules were designed to be implemented through national workshops. READ SA.: supported the continuation of the Aegean Cuisine network that enters a new era of digital communication, strengthening its brand and boosting the gastronomic and cultural profile of the Dodecanese. The project website and social media have been updated on a regular basis. In this period, we had more than 30 posts in our social media. The followers are as follow: Facebook 101, LinkedIn: 113 and Instagram: 53. All partners have contributed with news articles of their activities. Two transnational exchanges were organized. The first in Porec, Istria (18-19/2/2025) and the second in Appennino Pistoiese (Tuscany) on 19-21/3/2025. The transnational exchanges were an opportunity for partners and their stakeholders to meet, exchange and see best practises from the pilot areas. The 4th project meeting was organized in Skopjie (25-26 /6/2025) discussing the setup of the innovation community cooperatives and the implementation of immersive experiences. Study visits was also organized for exchange of experience and inspiration for the partners. Last, we participated to all the activities of the ISE Mission. We are participating to the mentoring programme where REVIVE is a giver to AgroID Social Cooperative Enterprise: focused on empowering small-scale farmers. During the 4th semester, partners continued implementing their Action Plans prioritising the establishment of Innovation Community Clusters (ICCs) and the development of immersive experiences. ANETEL: establish a governance framework for the cluster and formation of a branding and communication strategy for the pilot area. Organization and participation in a series of local initiatives (gastronomy, festivals), collaborating with influencers and stakeholders to co‑design targeted promotional actions. Advances in the creation of an AI‑powered holographic avatar as an immersive experience. Two digital laboratories were delivered focusing on AI, immersive technologies, and broader digital innovation skills. CNR‑ANCI: continue work with the food community network dedicated to recovering agri‑food biodiversity and highlighting traditional products. Key actions involved mapping local varieties, creating a shared catalogue of native resources, and producing promotional videos and social media content. Two capacity‑building sessions were conducted on digital marketing, VR tools/ platforms and website management. Immersive outputs include 360° videos and storytelling material designed for use in restaurants, festivals, and an interactive platform promoting regional gastronomic tourism. IPTPO: concentrated on strengthening community involvement and digital skills in Buzet and surrounding municipalities. They introduced the REVIVE digital platform (https://reviveistria.com/), supporting communication among local actors and promoting services and products, Visual materials (virtual postcard) are produced to reinforce community identity. Stakeholder sessions supported the transition toward a more digitalised model of local development. MCC‑AETIB: activities aimed at improving the visibility, accessibility, and digital promotion of local agri‑food products in Palma. Work included developing an online tourism platform, creating a food‑and‑wine brand, generating digital eno‑gastronomy content, and progressing a sustainable tourism strategy. Marketing campaigns, local product actions, and voucher schemes boosted producer visibility. Immersive 360° videos, VR equipment acquisition, and digital training workshops were implemented. A B2B purchasing platform (Nubia) was introduced to strengthen links between producers and tourism enterprises. SWG‑RRD: focused on building an ICC uniting beekeepers, municipalities, academia, NGOs, and SMEs. Activities encompassed workshops on community building, digital business models, IoT, e‑commerce, and precision farming, alongside drone‑based agritech training. Α digital platform ςασ δεωελοπεδ (https://rhh.mk/) integrating producer catalogues, a digital beekeeping logbook, meteorological data, and multilingual access. Immersive 360° videos and VR/AR storytelling are being created to enhance rural tourism promotion. e‑Zavod in Slovenia continued the development of the Slovenske Gorice Experience Cooperative, involving farmers, artisans, cultural actors, and local businesses Governance development, new tourism service design, destination‑manager workshops, and advanced digital technology training were carried out. A regional sustainable tourism strategy for 2025–2030 was finalised. Immersive 360° videos capturing vineyards, landscapes, cycling routes, and production sites are being prepared for use by tourist centres, municipalities, and the cooperative. READ SA in the South Aegean supported the Aegean Cuisine network with promotional videos, social media updates, gastronomy events, and influencer collaborations. Digital innovations included an AR‑based mobile application and an AI bot with a custom avatar for the Aegean Cuisine portal. Content creation missions on four islands generated extensive promotional material connecting local products with tourism markets. Under WP3, key achievement is the development of the Mediterranean Digital Innovation Hubs (MDIH). After all partners contributed regional inputs, the validated common framework was finalised as Deliverable D.3.1.1. The structure of the MDIH online platform was presented and refined, forming the basis of Deliverable D.3.1.2. A shared indicator system for the upcoming dashboard was established, and data collection templates were distributed to all partners to ensure consistency across pilots. In activity 3.2, all pilot areas completed the definition of their immersive experiences and initiated their development. Preparation progressed for Act. 3.3, that integrates data from all pilots into a common online platform. Partners worked on a standardised template for data collection. All organized 2 local digital laboratories and 2 international laboratories were jointly organised. Website and social media channels were regularly updated (> 30 posts). CreativeWear and CreativeWear+ (Interreg MED). The projects defined a cluster-based MED model for creativity-based Business Labs in CCI sectors. In CW the business model innovation (as a form of social/societal innovation) was tested through the creation of a transnational cluster of creative hubs by building firstly a local ecosystem of stakeholders (public-private-research-community) and then expanding these hubs on a transnational level through pilot exchange and clustering. Capitalisation of the CW model was further reinforced in CreativeWear Plus by the policy alignment of Hub activities towards the objectives of the European Green Deal. In CW+ the local communities of creatives identified specific thematic issues relevant to Circular Economy, In this way, the project further contributed to the objective of increasing transnational activity of clusters/hubs in creative industries by extending the scope and relevance of creative activities and entrepreneurs for social and sustainable business model innovation in the Med space and beyond. EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion The project delivers innovative solutions for the implementation of collaborative business models, emphasising the uptake of sustainable development pathways addressing directly the EUSAIR 3rd and 4th pillars: - Environmental quality - by ensuring sustainable economic models that contribute to the protection of biodiversity and valorisation of ecosystem services; - Sustainable tourism - by providing means to develop new diversified tourism offer (tourism is one of the sector with highest development potential in project targeted areas), also by implementing circular economy practices, and by enhancing sustainable and responsible tourism capacities. EuropeanGreenDeal Through its actions REVIVE contributes in tackling climate and environmental-related challenges set by the European Green Deal. First of all, the project will directly contribute to preserving and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity through the development of economic models which aims to respond to the territorial challenges among which the abandonment of territories. Depopulation is one of the first causes of impoverishment and loss of biodiversity. Further, the testing digital innovation solutions activities will contribute to create a toxic-free environment, through the set-up of indicators to monitor and measure the relation between products/services and environment variables. Finally, REVIVE adopts a participatory approach, involving local communities and enhancing the transnational cooperation in working towards a more sustainable future, in initiatives that seek to combine economic competitiveness, societal pull and technology push.
TerritorialAgenda2030 REVIVE addresses the need to boost innovation capacities through the implementation of collaborative business models enhancing the economic tissue bridging the gap between MED territories. It will do so through transnational cooperation and coordination of stakeholders with the aim to accelerate the smart and green transitions of the Mediterranean inland areas. Through its actions the project will contribute to both pillars of the Territorial Agenda 2030: 1) Just Europe - by strengthening innovation capacity, competitiveness of the Mediterranean internal areas, by strengthening territorial cohesion across borders, by encouraging all governance levels to unleash the unique potential of territories through integrated and cooperative approaches; 2) Green Europe - by strengthening innovation capacities and empowering local and regional communities to protect, rehabilitate and utilise their environments, landscapes, material and immaterial cultural assets
Other The rural areas are the main target territory of REVIVE. The project will contribute directly to the EU Rural Action Plan by delivering actions and solutions for stronger, more connected, resilient and prosperous rural areas and communities. The project will contribute by: 1) enabling the communities to take active part in economic and social development of their territories, also by applying place-based and integrated approaches; 2) providing innovative services and making the most of digital tools to encourage innovation pathways; 3) connecting rural areas by strengthening cross-border and transnational cooperation;4) by diversifying economic activities to new sectors with positive effects on employment and making an attractive environment for companies
Other EU SME Strategy for a sustainable and digital Europe. The project will contribute directly to one of the key actions of the strategy, the creation and establishment of Digital Innovation Hubs. The REVIVE network of Mediterranean DIHs will support companies to improve business/production processes, products, or services using digital technologies, to test new technologies, access financing advice and market intelligence and benefit from transnational networking opportunities
Other New European Bauhaus. REVIVE incorporates in its methodological approach the values of the New European Bauhaus Initiative: 1) sustainability, from climate goals to circularity, zero pollution, and biodiversity; 2) aesthetics, quality of experience and style beyond functionality; 3) inclusion, from valuing diversity to securing accessibility and affordability
The New European Bauhaus brings citizens, experts, businesses, and institutions together to reimagine sustainable living in Europe and beyond, such as REVIVE brings the same categories together to reimagine their areas. In addition to creating a platform for experimentation and connection, REVIVE supports positive change also by providing access to EU funding for beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive projects in the pilot areas. REVIVE coherently with NEB, intends leveraging our green and digital challenges to transform our lives for the better and intend to address complex societal problems together through co-creation.
Other EU Adaptation Strategy. By delivering solutions to fight depopulation and the consequent abandonment of territories, the shortage of jobs, the poor digitalization knowledge, difficulty in the conservation of cultural and environmental heritage , REVIVE will contribute to adaptation to climate change. It will do so thanks to the improved maintenance of the territory, and by introducing new economic activities based on economic and social sustainability
