The project addresses the MDG same themes - unbridgeable inequalities between territories of the Eu-Med region: congestion of urban areas and depopulation/desertification of rural areas - because of the failure to work on this Old-New dualism, which is instead the very core of Resilience. The transition towards the Green Economy requires coping with it both in National programmes and local communities, promoting widespread awareness about the active role that rural resources can play in social/economic growth. MESA works in education and training on Mediterranean Diet values, necessary not only to provide socio-economic stakeholders with the holistic and place-based dimension territorial problems (EU Territorial Agenda), but also to understand technical/specialised/innovative solutions (S3 Strategy) for a resilient use of its diversities. MESA addresses these issues in 7 consortia (Algarve, Andalusia, Catalunya, Campania, Slovenia, Split-Dalmatia, Crete): it acts in the specific fields of professionals and SMEs learning - Initial and Continuing Vocational and Educational Training and Apprenticeships - to provide and consolidate growth models based on common goals - Green Deal - and improve abilities to understand and implement customised actions and innovative projects to enhance the MD territorial potentialities and specificities. MESA forecasts training up to 630 young people and 630 professionals/entrepreneurs in four years. One event per year will be organised which can be an opportunity to connect internationally the MESA training beneficiaries with the MDG stakeholders. One of the main outcomes of the project was the development of the “PEFMED method”, which combines the EU’s PEF with a unique socio-economic performance indicator (SE-KPI) tool. Developed by project partner DNV GL, it is used to identify where a company can improve socio-economic issues such as human rights, working conditions, health and safety, cultural heritage and governance. Furthermore, the tool can be tailored to meet the specific needs of workers, local communities, consumers, and other interested parties. The PEFMED method was tested in nine agri-food supply chains in the Mediterranean region and in six product categories: olive oil in France and Spain, wine in Italy, cheese in Italy, Slovenia, and Greece, feed in Portugal, cured meat in Spain and bottled water in France. Based on the results of these tests, project researchers developed a sustainable business plan that each participating company can use to implement environmental and socioeconomic improvements. The plans detail how the solutions can be integrated into the company’s strategy and include information on timing, costs, and benefits. This also led to the development of tools and documents to support SMEs, agri-food Federations, consultants and policy makers, to facilitate further dissemination of the PEF approach. (FR), MedSNAIL - Sustainable Networks for Agro-food Innovation Leading in the Mediterranean (EN), MedSNAIL - Sustainable Networks for Agro-food Innovation Leading in the Mediterranean (FR) | MedSNAIL - Sustainable Networks for Agro-food Innovation Leading in the Mediterranean - is a project funded by the European Union, through the ENI CBC MED Programme. Its main aim is fostering socially and environmentally sustainable development of agri-food SMEs by valorising traditional Euro-Mediterranean products according to a “slow” approach and short-chain principles. To this aim, it provides consultancy, support and training to local actors, and promotes clustering of traditional products and producers in the cooperation area. The project builds on the well-established experience and methods of SlowFood, an international grassroots organisation promoting traditional food with a strong focus on biodiversity preservation. It has been running, in partnership with 6 organisations from 6 different countries (Spain, Lebanon, Palestine, Tunisia, Malta and Jordan), since September 2019 and will end in October 2023, hoping to have accomplished the following achievements:
- a study on the agro-diversity in the target regions,
- training courses on slow food approach and best practices,
- an alliance among small producers, public authorities and businesses to promote good, clean and fair food,
- involvement of SMEs in sustainable food value chain pilot projects
- creation of slow-hubs to provide consultancy services to agro-food MSMEs
- creation of farmers’ markets

There were four partners in this project: the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Algarve, CCDR Alg), the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve, IP (Administração Regional de Saúde do Algarve, IP, ARSA), the University of Algarve (UAlg), and the Andalusian Health Service (Servicio Andaluz de Salud, SAS). Each partner planned activities aimed at promoting the health of young people who attend schools in Algarve and Andalusia. These activities included specific measures aimed at this target population and will be based on the concept of the Mediterranean Diet, in order to improve eating habits and promote the fight against obesity, in accordance with one of the four goals of the National Health Plan of Portugal. The activities included a study on the eating and health habits of young people in secondary education in the Algarve region and their adherence to the Mediterranean Diet, before and after an intervention by ARSA; an evaluation of the nutritional quality of the food supply in Secondary Schools in the Algarve region; and a set of interventions aiming to improve, from a nutritional quality point of view, the food supply in school cafeterias, bars and food vending machines, as well as increasing the literacy of recipients regarding food quality. The project is being developed through social market research (consumer study), gastronomic investigation, promotion of physical activity, the participation of children, adolescents and their families, Life Cycle Assessment, technology, non-formal educational material (toys/games) and school materials. This way, more adherence to the Mediterranean Diet as well as better eating habits in the general public will be achieved, hopefully breaking the trend of the last few years of higher overweight statistics in the Mediterranean regions. The project will take 7 case studies from 5 different Mediterranean countries – Spain, Portugal, Italy, Egypt and Lebanon – with a series of school interventions. Healthy and sustainable snacks and recipes will be developed by expert chefs to provide better food choices in canteens. DELICIOUS will also create didactic activities and tools, so children and adolescents can assess how healthy and sustainable their meals are. The project receives funding from the European Union’s Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area Programme (2021 Section 1 Agri-food IA call), and will last 36 months.

It aims to increase the adherence to the Mediterranean Diet through tools and a methodology based on a citizen-centric circular approach starting from citizens and delivering innovations back to them. A total of 360 families from three Mediterranean countries are being recruited. A combination of digital tools and hands-on educational material, developed on the basis of a learning through playing approach, will be produced and offered to families to foster eating changes. The digital tools (specific Apps and a life simulation game) will help parents prepare weekly healthier dietary plans; the educational material produced with co-creation groups will enhance knowledge and motivation. The consortium of the project is coordinated by the Italian company specialised in business innovation ENCO SRL and counts with the participation of more than 18 partners from Italy, Egypt, Spain, Greece, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey, among which are universities, small and medium-sized companies, multinationals, as well as government agents and technological and research centres. SWITCHtoHEALTHY will result in increasing the adherence to MD, also introducing innovative consumer-oriented business models and extrapolating sustainable models in order to reproduce them in different environments (workplaces, university canteens, restaurants, etc.) and in other countries, beyond the project borders. SWITCHtoHEALTHY is funded by the PRIMA 2021, which is supported by the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The project started on the 1st of April 2022 and will end on the 31 of March 2025, for a total duration of 36 months.
