Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

    • EuropeanGreenDeal The topic of enhancing research and innovation capacities and the uptake of advanced technologies is preeminent in the EU political agenda. As foreseen by the Green Deal, the project promotes economic growth by creating new businesses and job opportunities, with a specific focus in the Blue economy and with a strong approach towards sustainability, keeping, as minimum requirements for elaboration of transformative innovation solutions the saving materials’ cost, the improving of security of supply, while at the same time, the reduction of environmental pressures and impacts. The transition to a sustainable blue economy, envisaged by the EU Green Deal also by the communication for “new approach for a sustainable blue economy in the EU” (COM/2021/240 final) is factually promoted by BLUE ECOSYSTEM by providing methodologies and approaches that are able to support more competitive and factual investments in innovative technologies and solutions, that will create new green jobs and businesses in the blue economy. The project, in fact, assumes as central the concept that all blue economy sectors and emergences, affected by the same project, should innovate to reduce their environmental and climate impact, providing a factual answers to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises and to increase the healthiness of seas and a sustainable use of their resources, to create alternatives to fossil fuels and traditional food production.
    • TerritorialAgenda2030 By providing for the factual application of co-creation and transformative innovation approach, the project supports the enhancing of research and innovation capacities as well as the empowerment of innovation by the quintuple helix stakeholders in the Blue Economy sectors. The innovation of the blue sectors and the commitment of key-players have been highlighted as holding particular promise for achieving many of the economic and environmental focused Sustainable Development Goals in Europe, included in the Agenda 2030. Through the support offered for the development of transformative innovation solutions, the BluEcosystem project, in fact, contributes factually to the: A) SDG 7 on energy by paving the way for innovative solution allowing the exploitation of alternative energy sources; B) SDG 8 on economic growth, by setting framework condition for economic actors to develop new business and jobs; C) SDG9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure, by paving the way for new methodology and approaches for the establishment of an proper innovation context; D) SDG11 on sustainable cities and communities and specifically to its first application within the transformative Agendas for urban city that are under implementation in several city of the EuroMED area; SDG 12 on sustainable consumption and production, by supporting transformative innovation solutions able to reduce the impact of production and involve consumers on strategic chooses; E) SDG 13 on climate change, by promoting low impact solutions and mitigation measures; F) SDG 14 on oceans, being focussed on blue economies sector for the increase of their sustainability.
    • EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion The project is strictly coherent with the EUSAIR and precisely to the obj. pursued by the PIllar 1-Blue Growth. In fact, the project, thanks to its approaches based in the involvement of a large basis of 5-helix stakeholders and oriented to increase the degree of innovation and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies strongly contribute to the promotion of research, innovation and business opportunities in blue sectors, by facilitating the exchanges and networking between research and business communities and beyond. Solutions that will be accelerated by TRAIN LAB include also the new sustainable and high level seafood production, developed in tight contact with consumers. In addition, specific activities of capacity building with institutional stakeholders are envisaged to improve sea basin and maritime governance. Therefore, the project provides factual interventions under the development of the Blue technologies (Topic 1.1), also setting the basis for new networks between the 5-helix stakeholders. Concerning Topic 1.2-fisheries and aquaculture, the project provides a portfolio of innovative solutions that boost the sustainability of these sectors, increasing their competitiveness and the seafood safety; while in relation to the Topic 1.3 the project is intended to empower stakeholders with knowledge and know-how to finally increase the governance scenario for blue economy development. Also, the project contributes to Pillar 3 - Environmental quality and specifically to Topic 3.1 Marine Environment since it will act for the introduction of advanced technologies and investments to reduce the sea pollution and improve the sea status. The project will also set solutions to reduce the impact of maritime transport, contributing to Pillar 2 and topic 2.1 Maritime transport. Cross-cutting issues are also tackled by the project as Research and Innovation, with particular attention to SMEs development, and Capacity Building, both for private actors and public bodies.
    • MediterraneanSeaBasin The BLUE ECOSYSTEM project is fully coherent with the Initiative for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the western Mediterranean, with reference to all the three goals supported by the Strategy. In particular, with regards to Goal 1- A safer and more secure maritime space, the project is open to set out, within the portfolio of solutions accelerated throughout the TRAIN LABs, specific solutions to increase the maritime space safety and the response to marine pollution, providing technological solutions to prevent emergency from accidents. Moreover, the project is tout court contributing to Goal 2- A smart and resilient blue economy, boosting research and innovation, and developing skills, entrepreneurship and industrial cooperation, thus creating sustainable jobs and investment opportunities. Specifically, it applies the following priorities: 1. Strategic research and innovation, by supporting innovative industries and services; 2. Maritime clusters development, by setting up partnership into train labs based on the 5 helix stakeholders involvement; 3. Skills development and circulation, by providing accelerative action to Train labs partners also oriented to increase human skills, 4 Sustainable consumption and production by creating a portfolio of solutions to tackle several aspects linked to the responsible exploitation of resources. Morevor, BLUE ECOSYSTEM is coherent with the Goal 3 - Better governance of the sea, being intended to empower stakeholders with knowledge and know-how to finally increase the governance scenario for blue economy development.
    • Other Union for the Mediterranean Ministerial Declaration on Sustainable Blue Economy and Union for the Mediterranean 2030 GreenerMed Agenda - The project complies strongly with the purposes of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), i.e. the intergovernmental Euro-Mediterranean organisation gathering all 28 countries of the European Union and the 15 countries of the South and the East of the Mediterranean. In particular, it is coherent with all the pillars included in the “Union for the Mediterranean Ministerial Declaration on Sustainable Blue Economy”. In fact, as the Declaration acknowledged, the project supports the role of research, technology transfer and industrial partnerships across the region to seize opportunities for growth and decent jobs creation in the blue economy. Moreover, the project, setting as crucial the promotion of sustainable solutions in the Blue economy sectors within the TRAIN labs, contributes also to the achievement of the goals of the UfM Environment Agenda - 2030 GreenerMed Agenda.
    • Other BlueMed Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda - The BLUE ECOSYSTEM project is coherent with the purposes envisaged in the Blue Med Initiative by the Italian Presidency of the European Union and shared at intergovernmental level across the Mediterranean countries. Particularly, the project complies with the aims set by the Blue Med Initiative in the BlueMed Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). Specifically the project contribution is transversal across the 4 pillars of the SRIA, foreseeing activities and interventions that are functional to boost: 1) pillar 1 - Knowledge: Innovative blue growth trajectories, such as biotechnologies, food, and the deep sea and offshore resources; 2) pillar 2 - Economy: innovative businesses based on marine bio-resources in the Mediterranean; ecosystem based management of Mediterranean aquaculture and fisheries; governance of maritime space and marine resources in the Mediterranean; 3) pillar 3 – Technology: Observing systems and operational oceanography capacities in the Mediterranean; Marine and coastal natural and cultural heritage in the Mediterranean - discovering, protecting and valuing.
    • Other UNEP-MAP Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development - The project is coherent and provides for the application of the aims and goals of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development, set up by the UNEP/MAP at mediterranean level. In fact, the approaches and the innovation co-creation activities set out by BLUE ECOSYSTEM, adopting the sustainability as base line, contributes for the factual achievement of obj. 5 Transition towards a green and blue economy proposed by the mentioned Strategy as well as to its obj. n. 1 - Ensuring sustainable development in marine and coastal areas and obj. 4 Addressing climate change as a priority issue for the Mediterranean.
