- DestiMED (Interreg MED) (EN), DestiMED (Interreg MED)
- (FR) | DestiMED has brought together 13 protected areas to collectively develop, manage and promote ecotourism in the Mediterranean area.
- The project developed a Mediterranean destination management organization aimed to harmonize quality standards and tools to monitor compliance and to propose attractive ecotourism offers promoted through a lasting brand. This translates into the definition of new ecotourism standards, offers and monitoring tools all involved protected areas.
- MED-Routes plans to adopt a similar approach for the definition and dissemination of shared standards to be observed in cultural tourism, embracing DestiMED’s vision and shifting it from natural protected areas to tangible & intangible cultural heritage in undervalued / peripheral areas united by their belonging to European Cultural Routes.
- In particular, MED-Routes will look at the Mediterranean Ecotourism Destinations Standards: set by DestiMED as a quality framework at interregional level for its research & assessment phase during WP1.
- MED-Routes can also draw inspiration from DestiMED’s Guidelines for the establishment of eco-tourism management plans for Mediterranean Protected Areas when developing its most strategic documents for Cultural Routes’ policy agenda.

- (FR) | TouriSMEshare explores the potential of sharing economy for the growth of European SMEs and Social Enterprises (SE) in sustainable tourism and cultural heritage-related sectors. It promotes those tourism services with lower environmental and socio-cultural impacts, for a higher involvement of tourists in natural and cultural capital preservation.
- In particular, the project focuses on matching demand &supply for sustainable tourism experiences in the context of sharing economy. From the demand perspective, tourists have wider and wider access to internet, smartphones and tablets which are used to seek individual and authentic tourism experiences; on the supply side, Tourism Destinations, Cultural Institutions and especially SMEs have a great potential to provide sustainable tourism services. Sharing economy is the core approach adopted by the project to support local development, especially in rural marginal areas and small islands, exploiting their natural and cultural heritage – both tangible and intangible -, supporting job creation and valorizing local traditions.
- MED-Routes will look at the best practices produced and collected by TouriSMEshare in the field of collaborative economy in the tourism sector, with the aim to derive useful suggestions on how to interconnect the key businesses and services that will constitute the new eco-itineraries for the sake of local cultural heritage valorization.

- (FR), CreaTourES: Promoting Creative Tourism through new Experiential and Sustainable routes (Interreg Adrion)
- (EN) | CreaTourES project was oriented to preserving cultural heritage and promoting sustainable and experiential tourism in the Adriatic-Ionian Region by exploiting Cultural &Creative Industries’ potential. In particular, the project focused on finding a right balance between innovation and conservation of the Adrion rich cultural heritage.
- Among the developed actions and tools:
- - a Joint Acceleration Programme aimed to increase CCI-related SMEs and start-ups’ capacities to do business supporting cultural heritage preservation and sustainable tourism;
- - Policy Recommendations and Local Action Plans targeted to provide decision makers with new strategic tools to support CCIs;
- - Mobile app and multimedia installations aimed to attract tourists in the newly designed CreaTourES routes.
- Activities have therefore been focused around competences-raising, supporting decision making processes and producing a strategic intervention framework for the policy-making sphere. As a result, the project has generated positive changes in terms of economic growth, increased CC SMEs-start-ups’ competitiveness, expanded tourist flows in designed CreaTourES routes and diversified and innovative tourism offers, better valorization of cultural heritage, enhanced collaboration among tourism-CCIs-decision makers, diffusion of a more integrated and holistic vision of CCIs.
- In MED-Routes, dialogue with CreaTourES project experience will be pursued (especially by the Coordinator) in order to incorporate the specific approach to Cultural & Creative initiatives that may be relevant to include in the eco-itineraries. Besides, the developed Policy Recommendations and Local Action Plans will be consulted as an additional resource to define the Cultural Routes’ vision for the joint enhancement of both cultural heritage and sustainable practices linked to the local economic sector. (EN), CEnTOUR - Circular Economy in Tourism (COSME)
- (EN), CEnTOUR - Circular Economy in Tourism (COSME)
- (FR) | CEnTOUR is a COSME project ending in September 2023 focused on supporting SMEs in the tourism sector to face the challenges in the transition from traditional, carbon-based economy to circular economy.
- CEnTOUR tackles the lack of the resources and skills faced by SMEs by the means of tailored tools derived from an integrated approach to business development, both in terms of efficiency and promotion. A central role is therefore assigned by the project to tourism SMEs in boosting local development through the development of circular businesses. The project intervenes on key areas like knowledge transfer, skills, innovation, certifications.
- CEnTOUR also operates to create a lasting network of institutions that can collaborate on circular economy support programs for SMEs in the tourism sector; it also promotes the exchange of practices and results at the EU level within a network of circular economy stakeholders and the development of an operational framework to replicate the business support program elsewhere.
- These two elements are both present in MED-Routes inside the concept of eco-itineraries, which are meant to empower a variety of economic actors (including tourism SMEs) to acquire complete awareness of the potential of their in-house practices and to cooperate with other entities – either same-sector or complementary – to expand the impact of circular economy patters on the local context.
- CEnTOUR approach to SMEs’ empowerment will be looked at for the design of capacity-building activities in WP3 targeted at tourism operators inside the eco-itineraries.

- (FR), Consume-Less: Consume Less in Mediterranean Touristic Communities (Interreg MED) (EN), Consume-Less: Consume Less in Mediterranean Touristic Communities (Interreg MED) (FR) | Consume-Less developed integrated sustainable energy, water and waste management strategies for the promotion of sustainable tourism models in Mediterranean cities.
- A core focus was dedicated to waste reduction at the energy, water and waste levels at the local level, taking into account the specificity of selected tourist areas.
- The produced integrated and sustainable water and energy management strategy, tested and transmitted to the relevant authorities for capitalization and transfer, saw the active involvement of a wide range of local, regional and national actors.
- MED-Routes intends to adopt a similar approach and looks at Consume-Less to derive relevant patterns and suitable strategies.
- Moreover, Consume-Less in its dissemination strategy has adopted one own project label awarded to private and/or public entities that join the initiative, committing to implement actions for sustainable management of energy and water resources and waste reduction.
- The EU Green Label to be developed by MED-Routes stands as a different product, as it is assigned to eco-itineraries as plural entities composed by a combination of different profiles that cannot act as stand-alone actors; however, the approach of Consume-Less will be looked at to derive any good practices for the mainstreaming of the Green Label that could benefit the proposal.

- (EN), MITOMED+ : Models of Integrated Tourism in the MEDiterranean Plus (Interreg MED)
- (FR) | MITOMED+ supports different MED regions in developing responsible and sustainable maritime and coastal tourism. The project has focused on the improvement of public sustainable development policies, the developing of joint planning tools and action plans, and the transfer of practices in different regions in the MED and EU areas. In particular, the project has developed a Management Model for sustainable and responsible maritime and coastal tourism planning through:
- - development of a set of indicators through a sustainable tourism evaluation tool;
- - production of an Open platform for data indicators;
- - ideation of a Green Beach Model in partner regions through two pilot actions.
- MITOMED+ Model can be used by tourism destinations to assure the tourism sustainability and gain competitive advantage, increasing the benefits tourism brings to the territory and the local community.
- Additionally, the project has promoted greater social dialogue with local and regional stakeholders through meetings and workshops aiming at sharing information and knowledge.
- Regional capacity building events and EU level conferences to extend results to other
- tourism destinations have also been held.
- MED-Routes will capitalize on MITOMED’s achieved results in 2 main areas:
- - it will address its set of indicators and technical background during the WP2 Transnational Working Group as a complementary resource to INCIRCLE Replicating package;
- - it will explore the key patterns used in social dialogue and communication with policy making to define a successful approach for WP3 and especially WP4 activities.

- (EN), Beyond CULtural TOURism: human-centred innovations for sustainable and circular cultural tourism (H2020)
- (FR) | This ongoing H2020 project sets the main goal to valorize heritage innovation networks as drivers of a European approach to human-centred and circular tourism economy.
- The enhancement of cultural heritage and landscape values is taken as the main asset to pursue a transition in the current tourism sector towards greater sustainability and authenticity against mainstream tourism models that cause negative environmental impacts and socio-cultural effects on local communities and ecosystems
- The project is developing specific strategies to promote an understanding of cultural tourism that puts humans and circular economy models at its centre, paying attention to nature, communities and cultural diversity.
- MED-Routes greatly shares this project’s vision by shaping most of its activities around the institution of European Cultural Routes, which are all united by the mission of expanding the tourism sector in close connection with regional heritage valorization, cross-cultural references among individual territories and cultural contamination.
- When developing the eco-itineraries, MED-Routes will integrate the approach designed by EMBLEMATIC project’s transferability guidelines with the strategies outlined by Beyond CULtural TOURism in the valorization of the cultural landscapes in function of touristic growth.

- (FR), TAKE IT SLOW: Lifestyle on the Adriatic as an inspiration for sustainable development, (Interreg Italy - Croatia)
- (FR), TAKE IT SLOW: Lifestyle on the Adriatic as an inspiration for sustainable development, (Interreg Italy - Croatia) (EN) | TAKE IT SLOW is designed to establish, manage & promote the Adriatic Region as a smart, integrated, sustainable, accessible, green & slow tourist destination. The goal is pursued by enhancing the tangible & intangible, natural & cultural heritage of the local islands and rural areas to make it more accessible. The focus is on small communities on the islands, coast
- and inland along the Adriatic Sea, which have preserved an authentic lifestyle closely linked to the surrounding natural environment.
- The project is ideating simple solutions for the management of micro-tourism destinations so that local communities can cope with the impacts of medium-large scale tourism, all while preserving local heritage and lifestyle. The project acts to make natural & cultural heritage a leverage for sustainable and more balanced territorial development.
- In terms of methodology, TAKE IT SLOW triggers high-quality levels of services and products of the tourism value chain through smart specialization stimulating innovation, knowledge, competitiveness and networking. Together with connecting multiple actors in the process from both the local & private sector, the project is also working on the promotion of identified destinations through the mainstreaming of ecolabels. As this is a strategy that unites TAKE IT SLOW and MED-Routes, possibilities of dialogue, synergies and mutual benefit will be explored in order for destinations to be put into a shared framework. Ultimately, MED-Routes aims to develop joint promotion patterns for the touristic destinations & itineraries coming from both projects, highlighting their sustainable practices as well as the authenticity of their touristic profile. The Adriatic area represents indeed an integral part of the wider MED Community and it would be interesting to explore how the key targets of the two projects are intertwined. The communication between the two projects will be facilitated by DUNEA being partner in both actions. - (FR) | DESTI-SMART aims to improve the transport and tourism policies of EU destinations by integrating strategies for sustainable mobility, accessibility and responsible travel with efficient & sustainable tourism development,
- The project aims to contribute to the transition to a low-carbon economy by the means of resource efficiency, resilience, multimodality, novel low-carbon transport systems, innovations, policy learning and capacity building.
- The project also sets an interregional working scheme gathering various mass tourism destinations in Southern Europe with different features, working on interregional cooperation, capitalisation of best practices, improvement of regional/local policy instruments and preparation of action plans for the definition of 'Smart Destinations' of sustainable mobility, accessibility and low-carbon responsible travel.
- MED-Routes will capitalize on DESTI-SMART’s primary focus on mobility & transport to derive
- successful patterns for the identification and promotion of the most sustainable practices in the tackled areas. Moreover, DESTI-SMART’s approach based on mass tourism will be analysed to be translated into MED-Routes’ focus on smaller scale tourism itineraries. Being partner in both projects, PAFOS will act as a mediator between the two actions’ approach and as a facilitator for the transfer of knowledge.

- (EN), Green Pilgrimage (Interreg Europe)
- (FR) | The Green Pilgrimage project operates to link the sphere of growth and development policies with the valorization of natural and cultural heritage from an economical and cultural perspective. Considering that pilgrimage routes in Europe are a very fast-growing segment of the travel industry, the project operates to protect natural and cultural heritage sites through empowering policy makers and actors involved in cultural preservation. This is achieved by the development of low impact tourism packages, enhancing key assets like digitalization and awareness-raising of visitors, all while developing jobs and growth along pilgrim routes.
- Within the project, exchanges and workshops on sustainable pilgrimage promotion, pilgrimage tourism impact, environmental protection and European best practice have been organized.
- MED-Routes and Green Pilgrimage share a specific focus on fast-growing niche sectors of the tourism industries that are closely linked to the local dimension and to the valorization of cultural heritage. Some Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe are indeed directly involved in Green Pilgrimage.
- Moreover, in both thematic areas tackled by the two projects, the connection with sustainable development as an essential asset is strong.
- MED-Routes will therefore draw inspiration from the outputs produced in Green Pilgrimage to assess how local cultural preservation can be adopted as a guiding principle in the design of eco-itineraries, as well as in their management & promotion strategies shared by Cultural Routes and cultural institutions cooperating with them.
