The company Cytomine and the University of Liège are both partners in this project, and the Cytomine platform has been chosen as the central platform for clinical data viewing and annotation. The experience gained, and developments done in this project in a research context will definitely benefit our project regarding collaboration between pathologists in clinical workflow, including AI integration. We will investigate whether the data collected in our project can be provided for research purposes through the Bigpicture repository after the project’s end. All digital data generated in the hospital will be added to the EHDS. Therefore, all digital pathology images generated in this project can become part of the EHDS, which can only be accessed by the patient or anonymously by researchers, industry, or public institutions. Furthermore, once the EHDS project is finalized, data available through this ecosystem can be used to develop new AI-algorithms. (NL), The DigiPath project is a cooperation between University Hasselt, Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg and Jessa Hospital, the two largest hospitals in the Belgian province of Limburg. This project has been included as a SALKturbo project (important strategic projects in Limburg) and has received funding from the province of Limburg. In this project, the digitization of pathology in the two major hospitals is implemented through a collaboration with the university. Financial and legal implications are investigated, a scanner, storage and software are acquired and a framework is set up in which data can be exchanged between partners, to develop new AI-algorithms. Contribution to wider strategies and policies:
- Other Digitale gezondheidszorg en gelijke toegang tot gezondheidszorg zijn prioriteiten voor de Europese Unie. Drie beleidsmaatregelen van de EU op het gebied van gezondheid zijn relevant voor ons project. Ten eerste draagt ons project bij aan het opleiden van toekomstbestendige artsen voor de digitale samenleving. Door het creëren van een internationaal opleidingsnetwerk voor pathologie en het uitbreiden van het gebruik van digitale pathologie, zullen we de opleiders trainen, d.w.z. de experts die de volgende generatie pathologen en wetenschappers opleiden. We dragen ook bij aan het verbeteren van de gezondheidszorg in grensoverschrijdende regio's door de grenzen voor gezondheidszorg open te stellen en de lage gezondheidscijfers in de Euregio in vergelijking met Europa aan te pakken. We zullen ook 'good practices' delen met betrekking tot het veilig delen van gegevens. Tot slot ondersteunt ons project de Call for Action on Colorectal Cancer Screening in de EU, aangezien het AI-algoritme dat we zullen ontwikkelen de precisie en doorlooptijd van de biopsies die tijdens de screening worden genomen, zal verbeteren.

- Our project contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Primarily, we contribute to SDG 3, which ensures healthy lives and promotes well-being for all at all ages. As hospitals collaborate and share knowledge, everyone will receive the same care, regardless of the hospital. We will also contribute to SDG 8, to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth. We anticipate that our project will help companies (mainly SMEs) in the industry to grow by gaining knowledge and experience in DP, AI, and other advanced techniques, which will lead to economic growth in the region.
- Other SALKturbo est une initiative de la province belge du Limbourg, qui vise à stimuler l'économie du Limbourg. Cette initiative se concentre sur quatre priorités et douze ambitions.
- Ces quatre priorités sont compétitives, durables, numériques et inclusives.
- Notre projet s'inscrit dans la priorité numérique, et plus particulièrement s'inscrit dans la ligne d'ambition « Utiliser la numérisation pour devenir le principal laboratoire de santé de l'Euregio » (« Using Digitization to become the Leading Health Lab in the Euregion »).

- Other The Federal Public Health Department (FOD Volksgezondheid) in Belgium launched the National plan on Cancer in 2008. Through 35 actions, they aim at evaluating and improving the cancer policy in Belgium, through new strategies and via providing feedback. One such action, for example, is creating a tumor databank, in which our project is involved, as the lung cancer samples are used from this tumor databank. For this plan, a new center was founded, the cancer center (Kankercentrum), which is embedded in Sciensano. They participate in many projects, such as the EUCAIM project on medical images, which is explained in further detail in C 2.6.
- Other La Stratégie de Spécialisation Intelligente (S3), concept introduit par la Commission Européenne dans le cadre de son agenda de croissance et d'emploi, se positionne comme le cadre stratégique majeur en termes d’innovation en Wallonie. L' « Innovation pour une santé renforcée » est un des cinq Domaines d'Innovation Stratégique (DIS). Les ambitions affichées dans ce DIS sont (i) leader international en médicaments innovants, (ii) leader international en technologies diagnostiques et médicales et (iii) excellence en santé numérique à dimension humaine.
- Notre projet s'inscrit parfaitement dans la priorité numérique des technologies de diagnostiques, des technologies médicales et de l(hôpital du futur (prévention et nouvelles organisations) fixées par la Région Wallone.
- Other Ähnlich wie in Belgien wurde in Deutschland "Der Nationale Krebsplan" im Jahr 2008 ins Leben gerufen, um die Engpässe in der Krebsversorgung und Krebsfrüherkennung zu beseitigen. Er konzentriert sich auf vier Bereiche, nämlich
- - Weiterentwicklung der Früherkennung von Krebs
- - Weiterentwicklung der onkologischen Versorgungsstrukturen und der Qualität der Versorgung
- - Ermöglichung einer effizienten onkologischen Behandlungsstrategie
- - Stärkung der Patientenorientierung
- Unser Projekt entspricht dieser Strategie, da wir uns sowohl auf die bessere Erkennung von Darmkrebs bei endoskopischen Biopsien als auch auf die Verbesserung des Ansprechens auf die Immuntherapie bei Lungenkrebs konzentrieren.
- Other In den Niederlanden wurde die "Nederlands Kanker Agenda" im Jahr 2023 als Ergänzung zum Europäischen Plan zur Krebsbekämpfung ins Leben gerufen, nachdem Ende 2022 das Nationale Krebskollektiv gestartet wurde. Sie besteht aus 20 Zielen, die in vier Kategorien unterteilt sind. Eine dieser Kategorien ist Diagnostik, Behandlung und Nachsorge, wobei Diagnostik ein spezifisches Ziel ist. In diesem Ziel wurden KI-Anwendungen als eine der Lösungen zur Verbesserung der Diagnose und Prognose definiert. Die molekulare Diagnostik ist eine weitere Lösung, die für die Diagnostik genannt wird. Daher deckt sich unser Projekt mit den niederländischen Ambitionen zur Verbesserung der Diagnose und Prognose, sowohl bei der Entwicklung von KI-Algorithmen als auch beim Konzeptnachweis für die Massenspektrometrie-Bildgebung.
