With BeamPipes4ET we develop a new production concept for vacuum pipes, a new welding technology and we transfer an existing production technology for flanges and T-sections to vacuum pipes. Our pipe production is more reliable, substantially reduces the labor and the amount of welding and the effort in finishing the welds. Our primary application is the production of 120 km of large-diameter (1 m) ultra-high vacuum pipes for the Einstein Telescope, a large European research infrastructure project adopted by the ESFRI roadmap in 2021. It will be located in underground tunnels with the geometry of a 10-km equilateral triangle. The cost is estimated at approximately 1.8 billion €, with 450 mio. € allotted to the vacuum system. The program area encloses one of two potential sites of the Einstein Telescope between the cities of Aachen, Liège, Hasselt, and Maastricht. Approval and site decision is expected in 2025. It is important to point out, that the scope of our project goes much beyond the application to the Einstein Telescope. The concepts and technologies developed in BeamPipes4ET can be applied to any large vacuum system and it can be applied to pipe line production or any large piping system. The evaluation and promotion of these possibilities is an integral part of BeamPipes4ET. Conventionally pipes are produced in factories in section of up to 18 m, transported to the site of installation and connected to each other with flanges or circular welds on-site. In our project we follow a completely new approach: We produce the pipes in a continuous process from coils of sheet metal on-site. Not limited by transportation, we can produce pipes of hundreds of meters in one piece. With BeamPipes4ET we will built a fully-automated robot for the production of these pipes. Our concept reduces the transportation to a few deliveries of the metal coils and it eliminates the need for connections between the pipe sections. This increases the reliability and reduces the effort in person-power. In addition, we develop a new technology in welding the pipes, laser beam welding under a mobile vacuum. It has the advantage of strongly reducing the interaction of the surfaces of the weld with the environment. Laser beam welding under vacuum is a new technique just coming into application now. It is performed in vacuum chambers to objects limited in volume by the chamber. We will extent this technology to mobile vacua. A metal pot, evacuated by pumps to a pressure range between 1 and 10 mbar, will slide along the object during welding. With standard quality control a quality and reliability can be achieved which will render pressure tests unnecessary. Eventually the ends of the pipes have to be equipped with flanges and T-section need to be added for pumping and other turnoffs. We will transfer a technology of pulling these features from the bare metal developed by our partner SBE for pressurized pipes to vacuum pipes. This will reduce the effort in pipe production further. The results from BeamPipes4ET will strengthen the bid of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany to host the Einstein Telescope in the program area. Independent of the decision on the Einstein Telescope it will promote cooperation between universities and companies across the border of the program area. With its innovations BeamPipes4ET will open new markets for the industry in the Meuse-Rhine region.

Met BeamPipes4ET ontwikkelen we een nieuw productieconcept voor vacuümbuizen, een nieuwe lastechnologie en passen we een bestaande productietechnologie voor flenzen en T-profielen toe op vacuümbuizen. Onze buisproductie is betrouwbaarder, vermindert de hoeveelheid laswerk en de inspanning voor het afwerken van de lassen aanzienlijk. Onze belangrijkste toepassing is de productie van 120 km ultrahoog vacuümbuizen met een grote diameter (1 m) voor de Einstein Telescoop, een groot Europees project voor onderzoeksinfrastructuur dat in 2021 wordt goedgekeurd door de ESFRI-routekaart. De telescoop zal worden geplaatst in ondergrondse tunnels met de geometrie van een gelijkzijdige driehoek van 10 km. We worden niet beperkt door transport en kunnen buizen van honderden meters uit één stuk produceren. Met BeamPipes4ET bouwen we een volledig geautomatiseerde robot voor de productie van deze buizen. Ons concept beperkt het transport tot een paar leveringen van de metalen rollen en maakt verbindingen tussen de buissecties overbodig. Dit verhoogt de betrouwbaarheid en de personeelsinspanning. Daarnaast ontwikkelen we een nieuwe technologie voor het lassen van pijpen: laserstraallassen onder een mobiel vacuüm. Dit heeft het voordeel dat de interactie van de lasoppervlakken met de omgeving sterk wordt verminderd. Laserstraallassen onder vacuüm is een nieuwe techniek die nu pas wordt toegepast. Het wordt uitgevoerd in vacuümkamers op voorwerpen waarvan het volume beperkt wordt door de kamer. Wij zullen deze technologie uitbreiden naar mobiele vacuüms. Een metalen pot, vacuüm gezogen door pompen tot een drukbereik tussen 1 en 10 mbar, zal tijdens het lassen langs het object glijden. Uiteindelijk moeten de uiteinden van de buizen worden voorzien van flenzen en moeten T-profielen worden toegevoegd voor pompen en andere aftakkingen. We zullen een technologie die onze partner SBE heeft ontwikkeld voor buizen onder druk, overbrengen op vacuümbuizen om deze onderdelen uit het ruwe metaal te trekken. De resultaten van BeamPipes4ET zullen de kandidatuur van Nederland, België en Duitsland voor de ET in het programmagebied versterken. Onafhankelijk van de beslissing over de Einstein Telescoop zal het de samenwerking tussen universiteiten en bedrijven over de grenzen van het programmagebied bevorderen. Notre production de tuyaux est plus fiable, réduit considérablement la main-d'œuvre et la quantité de soudage, ainsi que les efforts de finition des soudures. Notre principale application est la production de 120 km de tuyaux à ultravide de grand diamètre (1 m) pour le télescope Einstein (ET), un projet européen d'infrastructure de recherche adopté par ESFRI en 2021. Il sera situé dans des tunnels souterrains ayant la géométrie d'un triangle équilatéral de 10 km. Le coût est estimé à environ 1,8 G €, dont 450 M € pour le système d'aspiration. La zone du programme comprend l'un des deux sites potentiels du télescope Einstein dans la région Meuse-Rhin. La décision concernant le site est attendue pour 2025. Mit BeamPipes4ET entwickeln wir ein neues Produktionskonzept für Vakuumrohre, eine neue Schweißtechnologie und wir übertragen eine bestehende Produktionstechnologie für Flansche und Abzweigungen auf Vakuumrohre. Unsere Produktionstechnik ist zuverlässiger, reduziert den Arbeitsaufwand und den Umfang des Schweißens, sowie den Aufwand für die Nachbearbeitung der Schweißnähte erheblich. Unsere Hauptanwendung ist die Herstellung von 120 km Ultrahochvakuumröhren mit großem Durchmesser (1 m) für das Einstein-Teleskop, ein großes europäisches Forschungsinfrastrukturprojekt, das 2021 in die ESFRI-Roadmap aufgenommen wurde. Die Kosten werden auf etwa 1,8 Mrd. € geschätzt, wovon 450 Mio. € auf das Vakuumsystem entfallen. Das Programmgebiet umfasst einen von zwei möglichen Standorten. Die Standortentscheidung wird für 2025 erwartet. Es ist wichtig, darauf hinzuweisen, dass unser Projekt weit über die Anwendung auf das Einstein-Teleskop hinausgeht. Bei unserem Projekt verfolgen wir einen völlig neuen Ansatz: Wir stellen die Rohre in einem kontinuierlichen Prozess aus Rollen von Blechen vor Ort her. Da wir nicht durch den Transport begrenzt sind, können wir Rohre von Hunderten von Metern in einem Stück produzieren. Mit BeamPipes4ET werden wir einen vollautomatischen Roboter für die Produktion dieser Rohre bauen. Unser Konzept reduziert den Transport auf wenige Lieferungen der Blechrollen und macht Verbindungen zwischen den Rohrabschnitten überflüssig. Dies erhöht die Zuverlässigkeit und reduziert den Aufwand an Personal. Darüber hinaus entwickeln wir eine neue Technologie für das Schweißen von Rohren, das Laserstrahlschweißen unter einem mobilen Vakuum. Es hat den Vorteil, dass die Wechselwirkung der Schweißnahtoberflächen mit der Umgebung stark reduziert wird. Diese neue Technik wird heute in Vakuumkammern an Objekten durchgeführt, deren Volumen durch die Kammer begrenzt ist. Wir werden diese Technik auf das mobile Vakuum ausweiten. Ein Metalltopf, der mit Hilfe von Pumpen auf einen Druckbereich zwischen 1 und 10 mbar evakuiert wird, gleitet während des Schweißens am Objekt entlang. Mit der üblichen Qualitätskontrolle kann eine Qualität und Zuverlässigkeit erreicht werden, die Druckprüfungen überflüssig macht. Schließlich müssen die Enden der Rohre mit Flanschen versehen und Abzweigungen für das Abpumpen und andere Verbindungen hinzugefügt werden. Wir werden eine von unserem Partner SBE für Druckrohre entwickelte Technologie zum Ziehen dieser Elemente aus dem blanken Metall auf Vakuumrohre übertragen. Dies wird den Aufwand in der Rohrproduktion weiter reduzieren. Die Ergebnisse von BeamPipes4ET werden die Bewerbung der Niederlande, Belgiens und Deutschlands um das Einstein-Teleskop im Programmgebiet stärken. Unabhängig von der Entscheidung über das Einstein-Teleskop wird es die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Universitäten und Unternehmen über die Grenzen des Programmgebiets hinweg fördern. Mit seinen Innovationen wird BeamPipes4ET neue Märkte für die Industrie in der Maas-Rhein-Region erschließen.

Actual Achievements (EN):

In the first project report the following main steps were carried out: - A kick-off meeting with all project partners and associated partners was held at FEF in Eschweiler/Germany. - Different topical online work meetings regarding the pipe layout and the general project status were held. - The needed type of steel was fixed to 1.4901, a special steel type for pressure application. - A first laser-welding parameter study was carried out by FEF. - The first prototypes for new vacuum technologies (flange, tube, vessel) were built. - First layout calculations of the robot for the pipe production were performed. During the reporting period, the BeamPipes4ET consortium continued to refine the pipe specification, fixing the wall thickness of the ferritic chromium stainless steel AISI 441 to 1.5 mm and confirming the need for external stiffener rings to guarantee mechanical stability under ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) conditions. First vacuum simulations of the mobile laser welding chamber were launched; given the complexity and extensive computing times, the RWTH team organised support from external experts, leading to consolidated simulation strategies in collaboration with partner FEF. A comprehensive measurement scheme for the SBE flange prototype was established, comprising repeated bake-out, pump-down and leak-test cycles to investigate long-term ageing effects. To strengthen UHV know-how, RWTH initiated a new cooperation with the vacuum group at Forschungszentrum Jülich, thereby complementing SBE’s welding expertise. On the instrumentation side, a pressure gauge rated up to 85 °C was procured and integrated with dedicated read-out software, enabling continuous pressure logging during bake-outs of the flange prototype; calibration measurements were successfully completed and full bake-out campaigns are scheduled next. Buckling analyses of elongated tubes were reviewed jointly by RWTH, FEF and SBE, and the results were fed back into the mechanical design of reinforcement ribs and alternative pipe geometries. FEF produced revised 3D CAD models of the robotic welding cell, adapting the design to spiral-welded pipes and integrating selected process-monitoring sensors, while parallel optimisation of the laser-welding parameters proceeded on 1.5 mm material coupons. Quality-control concepts, including in-situ process and defect-detection sensors, were benchmarked with potential suppliers, and quotations for critical vacuum components were collected. UHasselt performed extensive metallographic characterisation—optical microscopy, SEM-EDX and EBSD on AISI 441 weld cross-sections, complemented by bending and tensile tests that confirmed mechanical compliance of the joints; preparatory work for gas-permeability measurements was initiated. SBE advanced forming trials on DN 400 pipes with wall thicknesses down to 1.5 mm, demonstrating that laser-welded longitudinal seams withstand collaring without failure. A novel 45° collar geometry was devised to incorporate the knife-edge sealing function directly into the thin-wall collar, and prototypes for DN 400 and DN 1000 connections were produced and hydrostatically tested up to 16 bar. Further studies compared three expansion methods—rotary conversion with conical rollers, axial collar drawing and tangential stretching—concluding that hydraulic collar pulling is not viable and prioritising options based on mechanical-hydraulic drives for upcoming trials. WHIC focused on the full implementation of the bending machine. The layout of the robot was fixed and technical drawings were made. In addition, WHIC compiled an overview of industrial tube-production techniques, enabling an informed exchange of manufacturing concepts within the consortium. The University of Antwerp continued to coordinate interactions between SMEs, research institutes, CERN and the Einstein Telescope (ET) collaboration, contributed to ET beampipe vacuum requirement documents, and staffed a post-doctoral researcher who will commission the 40 m pilot sector at CERN from November 2025 onwards. Dissemination and outreach were sustained through oral presentations at the DPG spring meeting, poster sessions at the XV ET Symposium in Bologna, contributions to the ET Pathfinder Workshop, and public exhibitions at Hannovermesse and CHIO Aachen, collectively enhancing project visibility and fostering dialogue with the broader vacuum and gravitational-wave communities. Across all partners, regular online and on-site meetings, internal jour-fixes and mailing-list coordination ensured efficient project management, timely reporting and seamless knowledge transfer.

The European Center for Particle Physics CERN is developing the vacuum system for ET based on current vacuum technologies. With BeamPipes4ET we will go beyond the current state-of-the-art and will develop new technologies that simplify the construction of the vacuum system and reduce its cost. CERN is willing to integrate our production concept for the vacuum pipes into the overall vacuum concept. Many aspects of the vacuum system, such as pumping, bake-out, or vacuum analysis and control are independent of the production method of the pipes. We will use them in full synergy. Other aspects, like cleaning or alignment are similar between the production concepts. We will develop the solutions together. Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

Other BeamPipes4ET fügt sich gut in die allgemeinen Strategien und Maßnahmen der Europäischen territorialen Zusammenarbeit (ETZ) ein, wie sie beispielsweise im strategischen Ansatz für Zusammenhalt, Innovation und Wandel (KIT2021) von Nordrhein-Westfalen und den niederländischen Grenzprovinzen erläutert werden. Wir entwickeln gemeinsam das Potenzial der Region durch grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit.
Unser Projekt knüpft an andere Bemühungen in der Region an, die durch den Europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung (EFRE) und Interreg-Programme unterstützt werden. Ein Beispiel ist das UHV-Labor, das an der RWTH vorbereitet wird. Es befindet sich in der Endphase der Bewilligung im Rahmen des nordrhein-westfälischen EFRE-Programms Forschungsstrukturen.NRW. Das UHV-Labor wird zum einen die Möglichkeiten zur Prüfung der in BeamPipes4ET entwickelten Vakuumrohre erweitern und die Prüfverfahren vereinfachen. Andererseits wird BeamPipes4ET zu den Innovationen beitragen, die das UHV-Labor hervorbringt.
BeamPipes4ET ist mit anderen Interreg-Projekten in der Region verbunden. Unterstützt durch die früheren Interreg-Programme von Maas-Rhein und Vlaanderen-Nederland wurde eine Infrastruktur für die Entwicklung von Technologien für das Einstein-Teleskop geschaffen. Die beiden wichtigsten Komponenten sind der ETpathfinder an der Universität Maastricht und der kryogene Testspiegel an der Universität Lüttich. Zwischen diesen Projekten und BeamPipes4ET wird es einen intensiven Austausch und erhebliche Synergien zu Aspekten des Ultrahochvakuums geben.
Auf europäischer Ebene ist BeamPipes4ET in den Roadmap-Prozess des Europäischen Strategieforums für Forschungsinfrastrukturen (ESFRI) eingebettet. Es treibt die Entwicklung einer Schlüsseltechnologie für das Einstein-Teleskop voran, das eines der ESFRI-Projekte ist.
