Relevant linked projects:
- SYMBI INTERREG EUROPE - extension (2022) (EN) | SYMBI project will contribute to improve the implementation of regional development policies and programmes related to the promotion and dissemination of Industrial Symbiosis and Circular Economy from 7 participating countries faced to policies alignment with the Circular Economy strategy of the European Commission to transform Europe into a more competitive resource-efficient economy.
- Industrial Symbiosis looks at interactions between the environment, the economy and industry, and promotes the sharing of materials to minimize waste, following the example of a natural ecosystem, where everything is reused.
- Industrial symbiosis strengthens regional growth and competitiveness fostering:
- Material and energy savings, reusing waste and energy by-products of industrial processes;
- New business models with secondary raw resources trading and innovative waste management services;
- Mitigation of external volatility risks, reducing dependencies on imported materials and fossil fuel. Slovenia with RRALUR is partner in strict cooperation with TPLJ. (EN), BDI Initiative Circular Economy (CE) (EN) | The BDI Initiative Circular Economy (CE) was created in April 2021 by the Federation of German Industries.
- It is a network of more than 50 members that defines the potential of CE and the necessary framework conditions through practical exchange. To this end, they are in close dialogue with policymakers in Berlin and Brussels and with the sciences community.
- SYMCRAFT will be involved with the operational platform through UIL and B&S partners. (EN), European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform (EN) | It is a joint initiative by the European Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee.
- Moving to more circular economy models is one of the European circular economic community's main objectives today. This transition promises a brighter future for the European economy. By helping to decouple economic growth from resource use and its impacts, the circular economy offers the prospect of actual, sustainable development.
- Industrial Symbiosis is a way to achieve a more sustainable and integrated industrial system, identifying business opportunities that leverage underutilised resources. Stakeholders in related sectors collaborate to reuse residues, use by-products properly, and find innovative ways to optimise inputs. (EN), CIRCLEAN - European network of businesses and SMEs for Industrial Symbiosis (EN) | The network aims at implementing Circular Economy Action Plan and Waste Framework Directive, where the European Union has assigned a prominent role for industrial symbiosis (IS). The project describes ‘the use by one company or sector of underutilized resources broadly defined (including waste, by-products, residues, energy, water, logistics, capacity, expertise, equipment and materials) from another, with the result of keeping resources in productive use for longer’. While the reuse of materials through industrial symbiosis can have economic, environmental, and social benefits, there are still challenges to its uptake in Europe. The project organizes a network of stakeholders dealing with Industrial symbiosis and related services addressed to SMEs and can be an interesting point of reference for SYMCRAFT. (EN), SYMBIOSIS initiative (EN) | http://www.industrialsymbiosis.it/
- It is a platform managed by ENEA (Agenzia nazionale per le nuove tecnologie, l'energia e lo sviluppo economico sostenibile) that collects and analyse all relevant Italian experiences carried out on the industrial symbiosis. Actually, 51 projects EU funded are connected and explored. Good suggestions for the toolkit, the method of engagement will be taken up. Additionally, SYMCRAFT is in relationship with ENEA (the LP) and sharing knowledge actions will be undertaken. (EN), CIRCULAR4.0 - Interreg Alpine Space (EN) | The main objective of the CIRCULAR4.0 project (TPLJ LP) is to strengthen digitalisation processes by SMEs to foster innovation processes and accelerate the transition to the circular economy in Alpine Space.
- The introduction of new technologies, notably the IoT and big data tools, is enabling the development and introduction of new circular economy business models, often based on sharing and leasing but also reuse and remanufacturing. New technical systems and tools enable the tracking of products or materials during their life to enable extended use/life and maintaining the highest possible value. Meanwhile, design and manufacturing capabilities are evolving with advances in production, material science and manufacturing, e.g. 3D printing and AI.
- CIRCULAR4.0 addresses specific objectives to Integrate the EU circular economy Action plan with specific actions addressed to the Alpine Space area and its peculiarities, focusing particularly to SMEs (eco-design and innovative business models), value-chain and clusters according to S3 and the EUSALP strategic sectors; policy makers (integrate circular economy into innovation policies for SMEs and 2020+ Programme).
- CIRCULAR4.0 will increase the knowledge and raise the attention of Entrepreneurs and Intermediaries on the circular economy concepts, develop and test a set of tools able to foster the contribute of Industry4.0 for the transition of SMEs to the circular economy, with particular attention to Circular Design models, Optimal Use models, Value Recovery models. The project intends to address Policy Makers, Intermediaries and SMEs to raise the importance of digitalization processes, focusing mainly on: the innovation processes, the business models and the investments needed.
- The project will produce a CIRCULAR4.0 Action plan to contribute to the transition toward CE in the Alpine Space with SMEs digitalization creating added value for stakeholders in the Alpine Space and supporting Policies and EUSALP Macro Strategy.

Contribution to wider strategies and policies:
- EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion The EUSAIR is built on four thematic pillars:
- - Blue Growth.
- - Connecting the Region.
- - Environmental quality.
- - Sustainable tourism.
- 2.3 Thematic pillar - Environmental quality
- - ensure a good environmental and ecological status of the marine and coastal environment by 2020;
- - help halt the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of ecosystem services in the EU by 2020;
- - improve waste management by reducing waste and nutrient flows to the sea and rivers.
- The theme of the SYMCRAFT project, which is the reuse of waste in the creation of new products, relies on the third pillar of the EUSAIR strategy, which aims to improve the quality of the environment Increasing the efficiency of waste reduces the possible negative impact that the same waste can have on the environment. Speaking in the context of the Adriatic-Ionian macro-strategy, it can be said that the project contributes to the creation of business solutions that contribute to the reduction of waste in the sea and rivers.
- EUStrategyAlpineRegion The SYMCRAFT project will contribute to the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region, and especially to the 1st and 3rd Thematic Policy Areas (“Economic Growth and Innovation” and “Environment and Energy”). In detail, the Industrial Symbiosis concept, on which the project is based, has the following impacts
- 1) IMPACT REDUCTION: reuse and recycling; Reduction of waste; Bio-stabilisation (reduces the environmental impacts and risks associated with wastes that are sent to landfill). This will contribute to 3rd Thematic Policy Area - Environment and Energy, and Objective 3, also thanks to the handcraft sector engagement: especially priorities 1 (natural and cultural resources as assets), and 2 (energy efficiency and sustainable production of renewable energy), as well as the goals of Action Group 6 (preserve and valorise natural resources, including water and cultural resources) and Action Group 7 (develop ecological connectivity in the EUSALP territory).
- 2) ECONOMIC VALUE: Creation of economic value from waste material. This contributes to 1st Thematic Policy Area: Economic Growth and Innovation, fostering sustainable growth and promoting innovation in the Alps, bringing innovation “from theory to practice”. SYMCRAFT will develop innovation and research capacity and transfer into practice, improving and developing support for enterprises (priorities 1 and 2).
- 3) CLIMATE AND AIR: Reduction of GHG emissions from waste and raw material extraction; decrease of emissions of NOx, SO2, CO2. This impact will contribute to 3rd Thematic Policy Area: Environment and Energy, and also to the objective of the Italian 2022 presidency “Effectively tackling the challenge of climate change by promoting energy efficiency and the energy transition to path the way of the EUSALP towards carbon-neutrality”
- 4) KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Extension of knowledge and practical know‐how of how waste management can be transformed into a sustainable and growth-oriented business.
- EUStrategyDanubeRegion The Danube Strategy, is dealing with environmental and innovation topics. Particularly:
- Priority 1: Innovative and socially responsible Danube region
- Specific objective: Improve framework conditions for innovation
- The SYMCRAFT will contribute to this priority by:
- - introduction of criteria for short supply chains in Interreg Danube Region countries complying with circular economy approach,
- - identification and testing of short locally based supply chains,
- - Applying approach of transforming waste to row materials to produce new products,
- - Network crafts sector with SMEs ,
- - Develop recommendation to adopt regional and national strategies on regional development, green economy, entrepreneurship in Interreg Danube Region countries.
- EUStrategyBalticSeaRegion In this macrostrategy we don't have a clear reference to the Circular economy, but we have indication on how to implement innovation processes, that can be broadly linked to SYMCRAFT project. This way, the following indication can be found in the policies of the strategy:
- Policy Area (PA) ‘Innovation’ aims at promoting global competitiveness and growth of the Baltic Sea region through support for entrepreneurship, business development, science and increased innovation capacity.
- The goals can be achieved by exploiting the full potential of the Baltic Sea region in the fields of research and innovation, as well as in the case of medium sized enterprises (SMEs), and by attracting talents and investments utilising the Digital Single Market as a source.
- PA Innovation actions contribute to building an ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship in the Baltic Sea region based on smart specialisation and sustainable growth.
- EuropeanGreenDeal The SYMCRAFT project will contribute to the European Green Deal realisation, and in particular the Key Action ‘Industrial strategy for a clean and circular economy: Circular Economy Action Plan including a sustainable products initiative and particular focus on resource intense sectors such as textiles, construction, electronics and plastics’.
- In order to do so, the Industrial Symbiosis framework has been put at the core of the SYMCRAFT project. Industrial Symbiosis is a way to achieve a more sustainable and integrated industrial system, which identifies business opportunities that leverage underutilised resources. Stakeholders in related sectors collaborate in order to reuse residues and use by-products properly, and find innovative ways to optimise inputs. “Where waste cannot be avoided, its economic value must be recovered and its impact on the environment and on climate change avoided or minimised.” (COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION, page 8).
- The SYMCRAFT action plan will deliver a specific business model, where the value of waste will be renewed and made sustainable thanks to the involvement, the creativity and the knowledge of artisans.
- TerritorialAgenda2030 The SYMCRAFT project will contribute to theTerritorial Agenda 2030, taking into account some of the recommendations there included in the paragraphs II – Why we need to act (Sustainable development and climate change) and III – Territorial priorities for Europe (A green Europe- Circular Economy)
- In particular the SYMCRAFT project:
- 1) recognizes Circular Economy as a means of boosting local economies in a strong and sustainable manner;
- 2) places Industrial Symbiosis at the very centre of the project, where the collaboration with industries is seeked to foster circular value chains;
- 3) also, our pilot actions recognize it to be central the cooperation among partners from different countries in designing and conducting them;
- 4) our partnership is made of partners from both peripheral and rural areas; therefore small cities and communities will be involved in the projecs development;
- 5) recognizes that creativity, innovativeness of craftmanship is crucial considering ‘the benefit from a circular economy in terms of repair, reuse and sharing activities at local and regional level’ (Territorial Agenda, paragraph n.40; p.12).
- Last but not least, the SYMCRAFT project referres to chapter IV – Putting priorities into action, when strenghtening the cooperation between territories, addressing to local partner, public authorities and private stakeholders, which should all support and actively contribute to the realisation of the pilot actions and the delivery of the Action Plan.
- Other Recovery and Resilience Plan for Italy
- NRRP Mission 2, entitled "Green Revolution and Ecological Transition," aims to address structural gaps that hinder the achievement of a new and improved balance between nature, food systems, biodiversity, and resource circularity, in line with the objectives of the Circular Economy Action Plan launched by the EU.
- Within Mission 2, Component 1, Measure 1, with an allocation of €2.1 billion, aims to improve the capacity for efficient and sustainable waste management and the circular economy paradigm by strengthening infrastructure for separate collection, modernizing or developing new treatment plants, bridging the gap between the North and South of the country, and implementing highly innovative flagship projects for strategic supply chains.
- Symcraft Project will be aligned with the national plan above mentioned and will support its implementation, creating opportunities of collaborations with the handicraft sector for zero-waste processes that could be further implemented by the NRRP.
