Project start date: 2024-01-01
Project end date: 2025-12-31
Project status: ongoing
Relevant linked projects:
- ROSEWOOD: European Network of Regions on Sustainable Wood Mobilisation aimed to facilitate transfer of experience and innovative solutions in sustainable forestry, contributing to the sustainable use of raw wood materials in Europe. By establishing four regional centers for the sustainable use of raw wood materials in North, Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, ROSEWOOD created a network that links regions and stakeholders from the value chain of forestry and wood industry. The project’s aim was to activate potentials of wood sector and to contribute to the sustainability of the European bio-economy. Four regional centers, launched within the project created a platform for regional and international exchange of experiences and innovative solutions. By linking stakeholders within the value chain in forestry and wood industry, ROSEWOOD supported an overcome of existing lack of knowledge, encouraged the uptake of new ideas and created prerequisites for economic partnerships between stakeholders and regions.
- Duration: 02/2018 – 02/2020, Programme: Horizon2020, Budget: 1.500.000,00 EUR. (EN) | The synergy is in following:
- a) Thematic scope: the project ROSEWOOD contributes to the sustainable use of raw wood materials connecting regions with the aim to activate potentials of wood sector in order to strengthen sustainable European bio-economy. DRWO4.0 aims to contribute to the sustainable bioeconomy in Europe by bringing DR forest-based sector to the digital, smart and innovative approaches of the I4.0. In general, both projects contribute to the forest-based sector of Europe in different ways, ROSEWOOD as a basic wood industry improvement and DRWO4.0 as evolved, scope specific continuation of the ROSEWOOD idea.
- b) Concept: both projects are based on the establishment of centres (ROSEWOOD-regional centres and DRWO4.0 pilot environments) with different expertise focused on interdisciplinarity and cross-sectoral approach. Conceptually, the project ROSEWOOD strongly supported transnational cooperation in the field of forest-based sector which is also the case with DRWO4.0 but DRWO4.0 includes non-EU countries also which was not the case in previously implemented ROSEWOOD,
- c) DRWO4.0 uses achievements of ROSEWOOD to provide continuation of wood industry improvement. (EN), ROSEWOOD4.0 Network of Regions On Sustainable Wood Mobilisation ready for Digitalisation
- Project ROSEWOOD4.0 is an instalment of the project ROSEWOOD. ROSEWOOD4.0 Main goal of the project was to efficiently transfer knowledge intra-regionally and cross-regionally through modern tools such as digital platforms, digital trainings and solutions, etc. The emphasis of project is on digitalisation of forest and wood industry (social media, online platforms, e-learning) to educate practitioners to share knowledge with greater impact. 21 project partners from 19 European countries, organized workshops through HUBs and implemented activities with the aim to facilitate sustainability of wood mobilisation. Wood processing industry and wood processing value chain stakeholders had a chance to participate in SWOT analysis, collecting best practices for sustainable wood mobilisation through international cooperation, creating materials for training and other activities. Primary focus of the project was knowledge and experience transfer between ROSEWOOD4.0 stakeholders, European partners and Countries.
- Duration: 01/2020 - 06/2022, Programme: Horizon2020, Budget: 2.047.901,00 EUR.
- (EN) | The synergy between DRWO4.0 and the project ROSEWOOD are in following:
- d) Thematic scope: as it was previously described in the section of ROSEWOOD, the thematic scope of both project is in wood industry. ROSEWOOD4.0 is much closer to DRWO4.0 because it introduced and incorporated digital tools in forest-based sector of Europe, although far from the I4.0 transformation model. DRWO4.0 will continue this digital concept based on smart and efficient tools from the I4.0 with the same aim-to improve, open and transform DR forest-based industry according to the EU standards and demands in line with I4.0.
- e) The concept of ROSEWOOD4.0 is similar to the concept of DRWO4.0, because both project gathering stakeholders through HUBs (PEs), but DRWO4.0 strongly support the involvement of non-EU countries and less developed regions. The idea of both projects are knowledge and know-how sharing among EU forest-based industry stakeholders so the synergy will multiply impact of both projects.
- f) DRWO4.0 uses achievements of ROSEWOOD4.0: developed training materials, roadmaps, communication materials, digital platform, etc. that will be presented and used within the PEs.
- GENERALLY, THESE THREE PROJECTS (ROSEWOOD-ROSEWOOD4.0-DRWO4.0) ARE CONTINUATION OF THE IDEA WHICH HAS IN ITS CORE THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE FOREST-BASED INDUSTRY IN EUROPE. (EN), MADE IN DANUBE: Transnational Cooperation to transform knowledge into marketable products and services for the Danubian sustainable society of tomorrow
- The rising population and associated demand for renewable biological resources make Bioeconomy a key element for smart and green growth in Europe and for the Danube Region. Successful development of innovative services and new products in this field highly depend on an efficient collaboration between research organisations and regional companies. For this reason, Made in Danube improved the conditions for this cooperation by developing innovation tools which matched with the needs of companies with the expertise of research organisations. The most important project achievement was in the implementation of three initiatives:
- 1. Smart and innovative precision farming (Nitra, Slovakia),
- 2. Competence Center in Wood Sector (Vukovar, Croatia),
- 3. Biofuel (Novi Sad, Serbia).
- Duration: 2017-2019, Progremme: Interreg Danube Transnational Programme, Budget: 1.901.275 EUR.
- (EN) |
- DRWO4.0 and MADE IN DANUBE are structurally and thematically connected, because both of them contribute to the sustainability of EU society in different ways. The most important achievement of MADE IN DANUBE in line with DRWO4.0 is the establishment and development of the Competence Centre in Wood Sector which started to support the improvement of the wood industry sector in Vukovar-Srijem County. Generally, the synergy of these two projects can be described as a common idea for the improvement of wood industry sector because the both projects support successful collaboration between research organisations and regional companies. In the case of Made Danube this idea was mostly oriented to the local wood industry improvement, while DRWO4.0 gives much wider approach that goes beyond the general progress of forest-based industry, because of its scope specificity in I4.0.
- (EN), FORESDA: Transnational Strategy on Boosting the Regional Innovation Systems Released with Clear Priority: More Innovation within Forest-based Sectors
- By including development of innovative products and services that come as a result of the cooperation with another economy sectors, such as agriculture, construction, pharmaceutics, etc, FORESDA wanted to show that it is possible to transform the forest-based industries into attractive and sustainable industry sectors. This is the so-called cross-sectoral approach. Forest-based sector needs support for improving the innovation culture of their SMEs and this also means to strengthen collaboration among companies, faculties, and universities, research institutions, clusters etc. All those organisations and individuals who are dealing with innovations in one concrete region are part of the so-called regional innovation system.
- Duration: 2017-2019, Programme: Interreg Danube Transnational, Budget: 2.128.319,38 EUR
- (EN) | DRWO4.0 uses the synergy of FORESDA in following ways:
- a) Thematic scope: both projects strongly support innovations and transformation of forest-based sector in Europe by using cross-sectoral approach (in case of DRWO4.0 it is interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, multisectoral and transnational approach). DRWO4.0 is much more oriented to the digitalisation and I4.0 and it can be classified as a continuation of FORESDA, because FORESDA represents more general approach in terms of innovation and regional innovation system. DRWO4.0 is mostly oriented to the connection of those disciplines that contribute to I4.0 (mechatronics, ICT, design, creative industry, technology etc.).
- b) Concept: Both projects are conceptually similar, based on innovative ecosystem creation in case of FORESDA and interdisciplinary and transnational approach which will be provided by PEs in DRWO4.0. It is possible to argue that DRWO4.0 takes into account DR geographic features because it organises three PEs (west, south and east) to provide better possibilities of networking from any part of Europe which was not the case of FORESDA, because all of stakeholders were involved in one innovative ecosystem. The synergy is visible in the progress provided by DRWO4.0 where innovation and transformation will include more stakeholders, extended networks and more innovative ecosystems.
- (EN), centrikomNET: Enhancement of competitiveness of transnational business competence centres and networks
- The project is aimed at solving the challenges of low competitiveness and the generally unfavourable business environment, lack of skilled labour, relevant competencies in product design, export management, financial management, and marketing by improving access to relevant competencies in the software area through the improvement of relevant infrastructure and services, training programs for unemployed companies and the establishment of a transnational networking model, thus raising the overall skill levels and capabilities of the workforce and SMEs.
- The main objective of the project is to strengthen business support organisations in Zenica-Doboj Canton (B&H), Vukovar-Srijem County (CRO), and Podgorica (MNE) territory by applying innovative models and approaches in the enhancement of competitiveness of local SMEs.
- CentrikomNET main project results are: developed one transnational business cluster, improved business-related competencies of partners permanent staff and unemployed persons through training and practical mentoring programs, raised knowledge of MSMEs on introducing new technologies and innovative solutions in business operations through pilot projects, and upgraded cross-border partnership model of public, private, and research sector for access to and exchange of competencies, experiences, and know-how for the favourable business environment.
- Duration: 08/2022 – 07/2022, Programme: Interreg IPA CBC - Croatia, Bosna and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Budget: 659.563,58 EUR (EN) | This project is of importance for DRWO4.0 due to its idea based on the improvement of digital competences. This digital approach created a pathway to a modern, digital and on I4.0 based concept which will be further developed through the implementation of DRWO4.0 in a much more specific, scope-oriented and wider approach. The network created, developed and extended in centrikomNET (transnational business cluster) represents a valuable capital with possibilities to be used by engaging those stakeholders in activities of DRWO4.0, especially in capacity building within PEs and transformation model development (through communication, idea exchange and cross. -border cooperation). The centrikomNET’s backbone was in three countries (HR, BA and MNE) that after DRWO4.0 PEs constellations belong to the PEs south. They will have an equal chance to be a part of all activities within the PE south with possibilities to be connected to other PEs which will show the way of transnational cooperation from less developed regions, countries and local levels to the transnational EU level. (EN), GreenCBC: Cross-border Open innovation bioeconomy network
- Main project objective is to establish Cross-border Open innovation bioeconomy network (GreenCBC Network) as a solution to increase cooperation between small and medium enterprises (SMEs), business support institutions (BSIs) and research and development (R&D) institutions in order to create sustainable linkages between all relevant stakeholders regarding R&D.
- Green CBC established 1 cross-border open innovation bioeconomy network (GreenCBC network), organise 4 brokerage events, develop and organise 4 tailor-made educations, organise 4 roundtables, create 3 types of questionnaires (for SMEs, R&D institutions and BSIs) to understand technology needs of SMEs, technology offer from R&D institutions and current services provided by BSIs to SMEs in order to improve collaboration between them.
- GreenCBC main project results are: educated SMEs and BSIs in the field of bioeconomy about innovation, technology transfer, new technologies, how to write EU proposal and potential future collaboration, established GreenCBC Network, increased networking, dissemination of good practices and innovative approaches and cooperation between BSIs, SMEs and R&D institutions at national, regional and local level organising brokerage events, and increased competitiveness and development of business environment in programme area by strengthening skills and knowledge of BSIs, SMEs and R&D institutions.
- Duration: 09/2022 – 08/2022, Programme: Interreg IPA CBC – Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Budget: 680.529,23 EUR
- (EN) | This project is of importance for DRWO4.0 due to its idea based on innovation, technology transfer and EU project proposal preparation. All of these elements will be key elements on which DRWO4.0 is based. The synergy will result with the increased number of innovations in I4.0 and increased number of submitted and awarded project proposal from both projects’ network. The network created, developed and extended in GreenCBC (transnational business cluster) represents a valuable capital with possibilities to be used in the way of engaging those stakeholders in activities of DRWO4.0, especially in capacity building within PEs and transformation model development (through communication, idea exchange and cross-border cooperation).
- The GreenCBC’s backbone was in three countries (HR, BA and MNE) that after DRWO4.0 PEs constellations belong to the PEs south. They will have an equal chance to be a part of all activities within the PE south with possibilities to be connected to other PEs which will show the way of transnational cooperation from less developed regions, countries and local levels to the transnational EU level.
- (EN), The DIGIT-FUR project (Impacts of the Digital Transformation in the Wood Furniture Industry), involved 43 European multidisciplinary experts, which carried out a Delphi analysis of how digitalisation will transform during next years the furniture industry in Europe. The project has identified the most probable scenario for the sector in 2025, analysing the effects that digitisation may cause in relation to tasks, occupational risks and the new training needs of workers.
- It was implemented with the financial support of the European Commission and with the support of EFBWW (European Federation of Building and Woodworkers), UEA (Union Européenne de l'Améublement) and EFIC (European Furniture Industries Confederation).
- The first project step was to identify the structural situation of the wood furniture sector, with a special attention on the digitisation state of the art along the whole value chain, but also key occupations (skills and health and safety) and market trends & other drivers of change.
- Then, following the identification of the possible sector scenarios due to digitalization by 2025 through a Delphi method research involving key stakeholders and a multidiscipline team of experts, the project analysed:
- a) New functions and requirements for jobs in each scenario,
- b) How the changes in these scenarios will impact (positively or negatively) health and safety risks of workplaces (e.g. more sedentary tasks, more responsibility and stress, eyestrain, etc.),
- c) Appropriate digital (and other) skills and knowledge that better match with new jobs requirements and functions.
- Execution period: 01/03/2017 - 28/02/2019
- (EN) | DRWO4.0 and DIGIT-FUR have common thematic scope and the synergy between these two projects is in following elements:
- a) Both projects analyse the current state of the art of wood industry using standard scientific methodology based on Delphi analysis in case of DIGIT-FUR and comparative analysis of DR forest-based industry state of the art in case of DRWO4.0,
- b) both projects have the mission to provide new insight into digitalisation of wood industry (in case of DIGIT-FUR it is the prediction model and in terms of DRWO4.0 it is transformation model towards I4.0),
- c) both projects are based on multidisciplinarity, involving a wide range of experts from different fields and both projects defining appropriate digital skills and knowledge that will be important in new job creation. In the case of DRWO4.0 this will be production of high value-added products based on digital and smart skills,
- d) Both projects have in focus the furniture industry due to its importance in the development of the whole Europe. DRWO4.0 uses furniture industry representatives to provide best practice examples in digitalisation and transformation towards I4.0. (EN), Industry 4.0 initiatives
- National Industry 4.0 initiatives are plans or policy documents that describe each country’s vision of the opportunity and challenges that these disruptive technologies present to manufacturers. It is needed to explain that do not all DR countries have the national I4.0 initiatives, especially those which are not a part of the EU. One of the most recognised national I4.0 strategies is from German and it can be really good model for the future development of other national initiatives. In general, I4.0 initiatives should address:
- Governments — Industry 4.0 initiatives represent important priorities and development goals to help identify changes in policies, incentives, and ideal standard practices.
- Private sector companies — initiatives identify new opportunities brought forth by the real-time access to the intelligence, and point to incentives and sources of investment to transform the way they conduct the business.
- Academic institutions — initiatives help identify which technologies or resources need to be strengthened to support innovation during or initial research or advanced R&D phases. Educators can use national development plans to determine which types of training and education to develop or offer to non-university students.
- Community — established or newly graduated engineering professionals can use initiatives to identify likely trends in manufacturing tech development, education, and employment. Initiatives are a great place to start looking for indicators of current and future needs for manufacturing professionals and technical specialists.
- (EN) | DRWO4.0 and Industry4.0 initiatives gather representatives from policy level, industry (private companies, SMEs), research and higher education institutions (academia), and community. In this way, they both support cross-sectoral approach according to the quadruple helix. The synergy of initiatives that DRWO4.0 uses is contained in general approach that I4.0 initiative provides, in the case of DRWO4.0, mirrored to the forest-based sector of DR. This will be a good chance to incorporate results and outcomes of DRWO4.0 into a future I4.0 initiatives that will be narrowly oriented to the forest-based sector. (EN)

- -PA8 (Competitiveness of enterprises)-since the project includes and supports the involvement of SMEs, it gives the chance for strengthening cooperation and knowledge exchange through the activities within the PEs. This will lead to the improvement of business approaches, especially in less developed or rural areas, eliminating cross-border barriers. I4.0 can be a starting point for new SMEs establishment or establishment of start-ups based on the digital approaches.
- -PA9 (people&skills)-DRWO4.0 provides equal opportunities for all stakeholders directly or indirectly involved in the project implementation. Through the project events (SO2) and project outputs, digital skills will be increased especially among the stakeholders of less developed regions, but based on their needs, challenges and potentials (bottom-up approach).
- -PA10 (institutional capacity and cooperation)-all activities will increase institutional capacity of PPs, ASPs, and directly or indirectly involved stakeholders. This will especially provide the link between science, industry, and policy. At the end it is planned to increase institutional capacity of 40 target group organisations, involved in the project.
- EuropeanGreenDeal DRWO4.0 contributes to the EU Green Deal in following ways:
- a) it supports the transformation of the DR forest-based bioeconomy into a modern, resource efficient, and competitive economy by delivering the Transformation Model (SO3, A3.2&3.3) and capacity building (SO2) within PEs (A1.1&A1.2),
- b) it contributes to the creation of competitive and resilient industry by engaging stakeholders in PEs (A1.3) and by developing (A3.2&3.3) and proposing Transformation Model to the policy sector for discussion and potential uptake (A3.3) in order to open DR forest-based industry towards I4.0. In this implementation especially focus will be put on less developed regions and non-EU countries (BA, RS, MD, UK), because it is important not to leave anyone behind which is one of the target activities in the implementation of the EGD.
- c) it supports indirectly the climate neutrality by 2030/2050 through a methodology for the digitalisation of forest-based industry’s SMEs which leads to the development of high value-added products and at the same time less consumption and exploitation of raw wood materials and less GHG emission which is needed for decarbonisation of the forest-based sector in the DR,
- d) it contributes to the circular economy through the transformation of the DR forest-based industry according to the industry 4.0 standards. The contribution will be achieved by applying the Transformation Model among DR forest-based industry SMEs. This will help them to increase efficiency in wood processing and production through optimisation, less time consumption, less biomass residues production etc. All mentioned contributes to the EU Green Deal Industrial Strategy (in the key area of shaping Europe’s digital future) and the Action plan of circular economy (in key areas of product design and job creation).
- TerritorialAgenda2030 DRWO4.0 also addresses the main priorities of the Territorial Agenda because it connects 10 countries (SI, DE, AT, CZ, HR, HU, BA, RS, BG, UA and MD) through 3 PEs. DRWO4.0 contributes in following key areas of the Territorial Agenda:
- a) It supports an idea of balanced Europe-by connecting less developed regions of the EU in balanced partnership (Vukovar-Srijem County HR and with AT and HU partners) and by involving non-EU countries (BA, RS, MD and UA) in activities of DRWO4.0,
- b) It contributes to the functional regions supporting their digital transformation according to the I4.0 through 3 PEs (west, south east). This will be achieved by the involvement of regional representatives (all interested stakeholders) from the forest-based sector in activities foreseen in PEs (SO1). The regional policy involvement and involvement of regional development agencies from HR (Vukovar-Srijem County, PORA), UA (FORZA) and BA (Ministry of Economy and Entrepreneurship) will strongly support functional DRs, because their involvement in DRWO4.0 gives them opportunity for collaboration with other policy authorities from Europe for sharing the idea of digitalisation, smart specialisation and I4.0 which will provide free idea creation and free know-how distribution,
- c) By connecting heterogeneous PPs from different EU and non-EU countries the preconditions for the integration beyond boarders will be met. PEs are transnationally organised virtual environments that help in job creation, project development, international cooperation and similar activities that lead to a better connection and mobility of workforces beyond the borders,
- d) DRWO4.0 supports circular economy within the priority Green Europe as it was described in the section EU Green Deal.
- Other EU Strategy of Forestry
- The Transformation Model will promote sustainable forest bioeconomy based on I4.0 which contributes to the development of high value-added durable wood products. DRWO4.0 provides development of skills and competences of interested stakeholders supporting them to apply a sustainable forest-based bioeconomy established on sustainable I4.0 transformation. The activities will lead to the less consumption and exploitation of forest potentials because through the incorporation of I4.0 standards the high value-added wood products will be created, as an exchange for mass raw wood materials exploitation and production of cheap or semi-final products.
- Other EU Strategy of Bioeconomy:
- The bioeconomy covers all sectors and systems that rely on biological resources, especially all economic and industrial sectors that use biological resources and processes to produce food, feed, bio-based products, energy and services.
- The project DRWO4.0 contributes to the Strategy of Bioeconomy in following ways:
- a) it contributes to the digitalisation with the aim to create new, high value-added final wood products that will lead to the less exploitation of existing natural forest-based resources,
- b) it raises the awareness on digitalisation creating and supporting the creation of knowledge society which contributes to strengthening of European competitiveness and job creation.
- c) it supports cascading use of raw materials in their finalisation, because the incorporation of digital tools provides optimisation in wood processing and work with minimum or zero losses.
- d) DRWO4.0 activities contribute to the SDG 9: industry, innovation and infrastructure, because the project is based on the development of DR forest-based industry 4.0 innovative solution. Besides, with its strong transnational aspect, DRWO4.0 contributes to the fulfillemnt of SDG 17: partnership for goals.
- Other EU industrial strategy
- The EU Industrial Strategy outlines three drivers for industrial transformation: global competition, climate neutrality, and a digital future. All of these three are embedded in the the core idea of DRWO4.0 in following ways:
- a) by raising the awareness on digitalisation, DRWO4.0 creates the knowledge society making big strides towards modern and digital Europe. I4.0 is definitely the goal of most DR countries and especially less developed regions. Making the forest-based industry digitally stronger will raise the competitiveness of SMEs of the DR forest-based industry, but it will also include the cross-sectoral transformation from the local community to the policy level. This represents a small piece on the stage of global competition.
- b) DRWO4.0 indirectly contributes to climate neutrality. THis will be ensured by the uptake of a solution and jointly developed Action plan. The sequence of the contribution to the climate neutrality is: solution development-solution taken up by stakeholders-solution provides optimisation of processes resulting with lower costs and lower environmental pollution.
- c) DRWO4.0 provides a digital future for the DR forest-based industry which also has the sustainability aspect within PEs' activities. Idea exchange, common project/products developed on the I4.0 will be the key of future digitalisation and digital high value-added products development.
