Materials as a cross-sectional technology are of central importance in the digital and green transition. Materials and material technologies are a key asset in times of geopolitical instability and represent a highly dynamic sectors with tremendous technological challenges and high innovation potential, such as sustainable, smart and responsive materials, advanced composites, surface engineering, lightweighting or energetically optimised materials. The Danube Region (DR) is strong in the production and manufacturing of materials and a key region within the EU to reduce the dependency on markets outside the European continent. The DR countries S3 strategies reflect that ambition clearly. However, the technological challenges, the growing need for sustainability and resilience demand a much higher level of Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) but foremost a more effective RTI transfer to the business community in order to not only remain competitive but improve the DR position as key player in European value chains. Yet innovation support system as well as RTI management and valorisation policy struggle with finding the right strategies and measures to narrow the gap to European innovation leaders and master the upcoming challenges. RTI institutions do not cooperate (enough) with business support organisations. The lack of sustainable long-term relationships and cooperation with actors from well-functioning RTI support systems prevents access to prospective RTI projects. Administrative fragmentation, lack of human resources and funding in RTI transfer system make the catching-up with EU innovation levels even harder. The transnational cooperation with the innovation leaders helps finding the right strategy and approaches to fasten the catching-up process in RTI transfer and narrow the gap between "East" and "West". Through experience and knowhow sharing from highly innovative regions to moderate and emerging innovator countries, the less developed regions are supported in the introducing new approaches. The RTIT>> consortium will develop and uptake the transnational Action Plan to accelerate RTI transfer in the field of materials and material technologies in the DR that is based on the New Industrial Strategy for Europe (2020), detailing policy measures and actions for decision-makers in academia and business support infrastructure, focusing on capitalising the region’s strengths and advantages, and delivering new knowhow to the region on RTI transfer, Design management & knowhow communities. All 11 territorial demonstration partners (MN, SI, BH, BG, HU, UA) will take up the three sets of tools developed, field-tested and validated, through an innovative holistic approach focusing on the three components of RTI transfer: the transfer itself, design management and knowhow communities. It is RTIT>> objective to strengthen the innovation potential of SMEs in the field of material/material technologies by improving the collaboration of SMEs with RTI partners and creating respective networks. We will build up knowhow communities, introduce new RTI to market as well as market pull of RTI mechanisms and support SMEs in commercialising RTI through design management. By creating better framework conditions and structure for RTI transfer in a key technology area such as materials/material technologies, RTIT>> contributes to resource-efficiency, sustainability and digitalisation, and strengthens the resilience of SMEs in European value chains.

Expected Achievements (EN):

Aim of this SO1 is to equip RTI structures and policy makers with capacity and guidance to turn today's & tomorrow's challenges into opportunities by capitalising the region’s strength and advantages and by bringing in new knowhow in RTI transfer, Design management & knowhow communities. Central is the preparation of an Action plan to accelerate RTI transfer in the field of materials and material technologies in the DR that is based on the New Industrial Strategy for Europe (2020). The action plan will detail policy measures and actions for decision-makers in academia, business support infrastructure and on different policy levels, ranging from local to national or event ransnational level. In order to prepare and promote this action plan, the partnership engages in a wider capacity building and learning exercise that covers a wide range of areas and topics related to research, technologie and innovation transfer and policy. The objective of this activity is to develop and fieldtest transferable and feasible solutions for advancing RTI transfer in materials and material technologies by activating knowhow communities and accelerating the cooperation among research and SMEs. Tools and instruments will be capitalised and adapted to the socio-economic environment of the less developed regions in the DR and field-tested in three transnational groups covering bio-based materials, sustainable materials and technologies and advanced materials. In total, +60 SMEs will be served by the created knowhow communities over a longer period of time leading to the up-take of research, technologie or innovation by the company. In sensitation events and shorter training will be involved +600 individuals to provide knowhow on the research, technologies and innovations available in the region to industry, or the other way around on industry or sectoral needs to the RTI community. SO3 is dedicated to make the project results sustainable, durable and transfer them. It's objective is to iImprove the framework conditions and structure for RTI transfer in the DR and ensure policy convergence towards the EUSDR and national and regional S3/S4 strategies in the relevant sectors. The created knowhow communities and their transnational network shall last beyond the project duration by developing follow-up projects and initatives. We will strengthening the impact of our project results, transferring them to RTI infrastructure, business community and policy level and communicate our learnings to an expert, policy and wider public. The cooperation with the PA8 of the EUSDR, S3/S4 and other stakeholder is also an important aspect in order to foster the acceleration of RTI transfer in the Danube Region.

DanubePeerChains - Interreg Danube (EN) | The main objective of DanubePeerChains was to empower Labour market Support Organizations (LSO) and Business Support Organizations (BSO) together with their target groups and further local high-potentials (entrepreneurs, SME employees, digitalisation specialists) in a joint capacity building and training approach to upskill to high-qualified jobs in the Danube region and to gain sustainable recognition as PEER-level collaboration partners in innovative transnational value chains.
Within the project project partners identified high-potential cooperation fields in digitalized value chains for project target sectors (metal industry, machine building, engineering, electro industry, electronics/robotics, ICT), introduced this innovative approach in collaborative capacity building measures for LSOs/BSOs, and upgraded existing technological and business model oriented trainings by integrating the value chain perspective and adapting them for the qualification demand of Danube area target groups.
Result or output of the project is especially useful for our project: Setting up training, tailoring information to SMEs, focus digital transformation.
Project partners were CCIS & BI. (EN), ResInfra@DR: Facilitating macro-regional scope and link up to socio-economic actors of Research Infrastructure in the Danube Region - Interreg Danube (EN) | The mission of the project was to improve framework conditions for research infrastructure and innovation in the Danube region. ResInfra@DR facilitated enhanced transnational cooperation and a macro-regional scope of the sustainable development of research infrastructures (RIs). The main activities of the ResInfra@DR project included:
- A dialogue focusing on relevant regional, national and macro regional but also EU level policy fields involving also end-users of RIs;
- Four specialised trainings for RI managers, thus contributing to capacity building with an outreach to the entire macro-region and beyond the involved partnership;
- A dataset of competent (and qualified) reviewers for RI assessments;
- Two pilot activities focusing on (1) peer reviews of nine existing RIs and (2) Ex-ante assessments of three planned RIs in the macro region.
- ResInfra@DR delivered: A Practical Guide on Assessment of Socio-Economic Impacts Research Infrastructures, A Practical Guide on Ex-Ante Evaluation for Research Infrastructures, A Practical Guide on Monitoring Research Infrastructures
ARC Fund was the lead partner for organising and conducting the four trainings for RI managers, as well as for writing up the Practical Guide on Assessment of Socio-Economic Impacts Research Infrastructures.
During the project implementation strategic tools and guidelines to enhance the socio-economic impact were developed. The developed methodologies, which adequately reflect the specific situation in the Danube macro-region will contribute to the current project as a keystone for the achievement of the third project’s goal – to improve the framework conditions and structure for RTI transfer in a key technology area: materials.
ARC Fund was a PP. (EN), AMULET: Advanced Materials & manufacturing United for LightwEighT - Horizon 2020 (EN) | The Advanced Materials & manufacturing United for LightwEighT (AMULET) project is a HORIZON 2020 project that aims to exploit the innovation potential of SMEs through a cross-sectoral, funded knowledge exchange. The goal of AMULET is to create new value chains by fostering the penetration of advanced lightweight materials in different fields through cross-regional and cross-sectoral knowledge exchange in four sectors: automotive, aerospace and aeronautics, energy, and building.
To reach the ambitious goal of a decarbonized and efficient circular economy, lightweight construction was identified to play a key role. Thereby, the application of advanced lightweight materials such as polymer-based composites, ceramic matrix composites and light metal alloys has already enabled significant weight reductions while increasing performance over the past decades. However, the application potential of advanced lightweight materials that has been achieved scientifically and technically has not yet been fully exploited by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
R&D demonstration projects targeting current sectorial challenges will be developed to reach TRL7, following a competitive-based approach. SMEs participating in the project will receive technical training support and business-to-business coaching for accelerating the commercialisation of their innovative solutions. RTIT >> project partners will build on this knowledge, especially regarding the knowledge transfer to SMEs.
CCIPB is a PP. (EN), NUCLEI: "Network of Technology Transfer Nodes for Enhanced Open Innovation in the Central European Advanced Manufacturing and Processing Industry" - Interreg CE (EN) | NUCLEI project aimed to establish a transnational innovation management model in Central European regions and created a transnational pool of knowledge that support advanced manufacturing innovation beyond regional borders. This work increased economic interdependencies among seven regions and encouraged more effective transnational value chains in automotive, electrical industry, IT sector, robotic and mechanic automation.
The main project achievements were investigated the potential impact and integration with other regional projects or relevant policy initiatives; conducted trans-regional analysis of the policy instrument adopted in Central Europe regions, outlining those measures that can be investigated more in depth and potentially taken as inspiration for new policy initiatives; transferred results to S3 managers, outlining the requirements resulting from the contacts with the companies involve in the project pilot actions, obtained a careful analysis of the different regional contexts with a focus on regional R&D goals for advanced manufacturing (to be considered in the design of innovation
services, made by the NUCLEI partners). (EN)

The project emphasizes improving collaboration between SMEs and research, technology, and innovation (RTI) entities, which is an objective under PA7 Knowledge Society.
