Description (EN):

The Danube Region is characterized by a unique richness of various forests of high ecological value still inhabiting a high biodiversity and providing numerous ecological services. At the same time the Danube Region holds also a rich cultural heritage and asset of traditional usage and application of local wood. However both assets in the Danube region are currently endangered to get lost, due to influences of anonymous global markets.This has several negative impacts, on the one hand it depretiates the rich cultural heritage across the DR and weakens the awareness and pride of it. On the other hand global markets have a negative impact on the natural resources and the opportunity of its sustainable valorisation, as they do not show responsibility for local resources together with a demand for a more limitied assortment of wood. The project aims to change this and improve the frame conditions for a sustainable regional development based on the sustainable valorisation of the natural and cultural resources through a multi stakeholder process. This will be linked to the development of new ecotourism products and services as an important driving force and multiplier. Activities will include an inventory and mapping of the natural as well as cultural heritage related to forests and wood to raise awareness of the common assets of the Danube Region. The joint development of a common strategy as well as specific tools to foster a sustainable regional development combined with several regional action plans will increase the transnational colaboration between the different Danube countries. Pilot actions in the participating countries (e.g training, toolbox, crowfunding) quality intinirary of the route will practically implement the strategy. All activities will result in the initiation of a EGTC Danube Woods cultural route. This will provide a continuous platform for mutual learning, multual understanding, transnational colaboration and basis for connecting regional development.

Actual Achievements (EN):

In the 1RP BSC LP put together the structure of management of the project; defining the internal ways of cooperation within partnership, as well as within BSC Kranj. BSC established internal google drive for partnership, contact list of PP-s was put in place. Partnership had regular on line meetings with partners, kick off was in person in Bled on 04. and 05.04.2024 (most partners were present,expect PP 9 and PP 16. At kick off in Bled steering commitee was formed and first conclusions were taken.LP had individual discussions, mainly on phone with partners regarding the start up activities. Together with PP 13 DCC, the communication templates were prepared and upgraded, based on instructions from the Program. Additional support for communication was implemented via on phone contacts with partners with exchange of info. All SO-s,timeline, budget was presented to PP-s. Techical activities started with the activity 1.1. Inventory report of natural and cultural assets of forests and wood and touristic infrastructure with base linestandards/recomendations. Based on first draft of methodology provided by PP 3 HVH (activity 1.1. leader), LP and PP-s provided suggestions for upgrading the draft of methodology for activity 1.1. and its deliverables (inventory and map). Partners started with preparation of delivery 1.1.1. inventory and 1.1.2. map. All PPs (expect PP 16 financial problems) and PP 9 due to change of personel) gathered attractions for inventory 1.1.1. and filled in the data in delivery 1.1.2 map. Both first info about communication (provided by DCC) and thematic activity 1.1. (provided by HVH) was presented to partners on alive kick off in Bled, where questions and proposal for upgrading the prepared methodology for activity 1.1. was provided by LP and all partnership. After methodology for activity 1.1. was finalised PP-s started to enter the data in the google drive platform (D 1.1.1. Inventory and D 1.1.2. map). PP-s provided entries (both in analysis and map, as well as provided pictures of the attractions, Partners mainly made desk work with phone contacts to stakeholder, as a support some of PP.s manage to engage external experts. Most of the partners postponed the 1meeting with stakeholders (local/regional group) in next RP-s to present first results of desk research work (delivery 1.1.1 and 1.1.2), while some partners already had 1 meeting with regional stakeholders (e.g. PP 5). LP started the discussions with activity 1.2. leader PP 6 WWFRO Joint Development of a common Danube strategy and activity leader 1.3. STRIA Development of regional action plans about the first ideas for the Activity 1.2. strategy and Activity 1.3. Action plan. Both activities 1.2. and 1.3. will start in 2 RP, while they are strongly connected to the activity 1.1. and its deliverables. Based on discussions with partners they propose to prolong the activity 1.1. as essential part for the quality work in activity 1.2. and 1.3. as well for the further work in SO 2 and SO 3. The WWF RO and STRIA introduced the tasks 1.2. and 1.3. to partners on on line meeting in June 2024,while LP, PP-S contributed with suggestions,for activity 1.2. and 1.3. content as well. LP was checking together with HVH the implementation of task 1.1. with deliverables 1.1.1. and 1.1.2. and exchange info about deliverables with PP.s. Based on conclusion of partners in on line meeting in June 2024 LP started the exchange of info with the Program regarding the prolongation of the activity 1.1. ,1.2.( 1.1.1.further inputs needed, 1.2.activity lead: PP 6 WWFRO facing long procurement process) LP an communication manager PP 13 DCC participated on on line seminar;communication, provided by the Program, as well LP,PP 13 DCC participated in person in LP seminar in Belgrade (24. and 25.04.2024), where important information regarding management of partnership, content and financial management of the projects were given, as well the information about the strategic groups (for DANUBE WOOD(s) ROUTE, sustainable tourism We met the coordinator of the strategic group and we had first discussions about the possible cooperation in the future.LP and PP 13 had an opportunity to meet representative of the Program and we could ask questions that will help us in better management of the project. We also had an opportunity to meet colleagues - LP-s from other projects that were approved in 1. call. Based on the LP seminar, LP informed PPs about the info received at LP seminar and supported partners with information needed regarding the content, financial reporting. Additional support for communication was implemented via on phone contacts with partners with exchange of info. The following activities took place in 2 RP: Activity 1.2. Strategy Methodology (part cultural heritage, value chains, biodiversity) firstly draft, later on final version was prepared by BSC,HVH and support of staff WWF in cooperation with all partners. Template – methodology is in place. Due to long procurement processes by WWF activity leader: LP, HVH supported WWF and prepared methodology for gathering the data for the inputs from PP-s for activity 1.2. Strategy. Outline of the methodology parts (cultural heritage, value chains, biodiversity) were presented to PPs in RP 2, based on comments of PP-s final methodology was prepared. PP-s started with their work – inputs for strategy. Due to comprehensive, extensive work needed by partners to prepare the inputs for methodology 1.2. Strategy and external selection by WWF (expert for preparation of overall strategy) still in process) output 1 will be delayed to end of RP 3. Some partners procured externals to support them in activity 1.2.,while others worked with their own personell. Partners worked extensively on preparation of the inputs for 1.2. Strategy. Some partners have main expertise in cultural heritage, others in value chains, biodiversity, there fore additional effort and extensive research in PP-s regions in finding ,gathering the data is needed, therefore minor prolongation towards finishing the work in 3 RP is required. PP 1 – PP 17 are preparing inputs (for their perspective geographical regions), exception PP 17 NPK Kozara (due to financial problems). Activity 1.3. PP 17 Stria prepared methodology for 1.3. action plan, firstly draft, based on PP- s comment final version was prepared in RP 2 and is in place. PP-s will start to work on action plan based on outline of the activity 1.2. strategy. First inputs for methodology 1.3.action plan) by PP-s are expected as in AF in RP3. SO2,SO3 LP and PPs responsible for SO2 activities had first one on one discussion regarding tasks in SO 2 (A.2.1. Trainings/workshops with SMART, A 2.2. Innovation toolbox with HVH, A 2.3. Crowdfunding with ISD), 2.4. Development of possible itineraries for the prospective cultural route with DCC. Activities 2.1..2.2.,2.3.,24. start up will start as foreseen in RP3. First brainstorming about SO 2 activity Development of possible itineraries for the prospective cultural route and SO 3 Activity 3.2. transnational wood route network took place during the 2 PP meeting in Romania. Spending for 2 RP increased in comparison to RP 1:from planned 565.276,37 EUR , 400.261,62 EUR was certified, with overall 73,81% of spending foreseen for RP 2.

CROWDSTREAM (Interreg DANUBE) (EN) | CROWDSTREAM developed digital training material for public actors supporting start-ups and social enterprises approaching crowdfunding. The material is available to wider public onlin using moodle. Training material will be used for development of crowdfunding campaigns within the activity A2.4. (EN), Green heart of Europe project Maramures (WWF Belgium) (EN) | The pilot site was the model area of Strambu Baiut in Maramures County and major activities included: i) testing the potential for ecotourism based on wildlife watching, e.g. rehabilitation of wildlife observatory, development and marketing of ecotourism packages, ii) encouraging and supporting local entrepreneurs to develop green businesses - qualifications for local guides, development of interpretation manual for ecotourism.
The project will built upon the experiences regarding development of ecosystem based tourism products. (EN), Voluntary payment for Ecosystem services (WWF Sweden) (EN) | - Starting with 2021 WWF RO is implementing a pilot project in Maramures on establishing a voluntary Payment for Ecosystem Services/PES scheme (Strambu Baiut area, in the proximity of the Eco Maramures Destination). The pilot project, financed by WWF Sweden, is setting up a functional, local, transparent governance mechanism to ensure proper management of habitats and species and bring benefits to local communities and at the same time co-develop and test business models for conservation/maintenance of valuable forest ecosystem habitats and related services.
The project will benefot from the experiences especially with regard to the crowdfunding topic and financement of further offers and initiatives. (EN), WWF Project “Support Responsible Forest Management for Sustainable Development in the CEE Region” (2020-2023) (EN) | In this project has already been taken the first step to promote the „forest-dependent community” concept in the National Forest Strategy 2030 (SNP30). As a result SNP30 acknowledges the existence of forest-dependent local communities in Romania and proposes to regulate their access to forest resources. However, it only sets the general strategic directions and the concept needs to be further developed, aiming to include specific criteria for identification and establish the proper governance framework to enable these communities to have access to forest resources on which they are dependent.
This will be realised by activities in the project 'Danube Wood(s)'. (EN), Inter-municipal cooperation regional value chain phase 1 and 2 (2013 - 2014 - USAID`s Sustainable Local Development) (EN) | The first phase of the project focused on identifying the existing production and demand for local products, its presence in HoReCa segment and obstacles to greater sales, as well as finding the solutions to better integration of local products into the tourism product in Zlatibor region, in terms of sales and marketing. In the second phase results were capitalized through establishment and promotion of guarantee mark “Mountain breakfast” , that was intriduced in hotels and rural households.
This concept can be included in new cultural route for wider promotion and capitalisation at international level, since it could be added value in Danube woods route. (EN), THEMATIC Tourism founded in innovation capacities (2020 - 2023 - INTERREG V-B Adriatic-Ionian ADRION Programme 2014-2020). (EN) | Main project objectives: valorization of cultural and natural resources, capacity building for development of sustainable and accessible thematic and cultural tourism, through pilot actions and joint promotional initiatives by applying innovations, transnational networking and cooperation. Established network of stakeholders in the system of cultural and naturalistic tourism for creation of innovation and joint action transferable at macro regional level, developed joint strategy and action plan for the development sustainable and accessible cultural tourism.
Data, methodology, stakeholders can be used for further involvement and capitalization in the establishment of new cultural route. (EN), Via Dinarica - Green Trail Above Borders (2023 - 2025 - IPA II Cross-Border Cooperation Program Serbia - Bosnia and Herzegovina 2014 - 2020). (EN) | The project aims to contribute to the socio-economic development of the cross-border region through creation and improvement of the tourist product Via Dinarica: Green route of Via Dinarica Trail. It implies maintenance of existing and marking of new hiking and walking trails along with mapping of unique and natural, cultural sites, including tourism service providers located near the route.
The tourist product 'Via Dinarica' passes through mountain areas (pastures, forests, meadows) and can be incorporated in wider cultural route and become visible and accessable to the wider market in Danube region by the project Danube wood(s). (EN), Forest and mountain protected areas (The World Bank-GEF) 2008-2012 (EN) | The project aimed at biodiversity conservation and strengthening capacities for sustainable development of protected areas through:
-protected areas management plans creation, operations and facilities development
-new infrastructure, limited small-scale building rehabilitation, trail improvements, new trail creation
- strengthening the institutions responsible for planning, establishment and management of protected areas
-building competencies in key areas including eco-system based management focusing an integration of ecological, economic and social aspects and sustainability and field-level skills in areas such as patrolling, community engagement, visitor management and interpretation
-public awareness programmes in order to raise public awareness on biodiversity conservation and protected areas.
Experience, knowledge and information gained through this project will be of great use for implementation of project activities. Also, contacts made during the project can be useful for the project activities.
(EN), "Nature for recovery"( EU4Business Recovery) -2022-2023 (EN) | The project focused on the restoration of the location and the development of the tourist offer in the wider area of the nature protected Skakavac waterfall by introducing new tourist packages, popularizing Skakavac and establishing functional outdoor tourism. Realization of the project will create better conditions for further organized development and better use of the total tourist potential .
Danube wood(s) will capitalize the knowledge gained through the development of a new tourist offer, the creation of a visitor management plan for the Skakavac location, the organization of training for capacity building, the promotion of the new green offer and location. (EN), CONNECTING Nature project (HORIZON 2020)-2017-2022 (EN) | The goal of the project was to position Europe as a global leader in innovation and application of solutions based on natural solutions. will capitalise the knowledge.
Danube wood(s) will capitalise knowledge from capacities building in terms of how to become healthier, ecological cities, with better living conditions for all, greater green infrastructure and biodiversity, improved air and water quality, improved mobility conditions, opportunities for urban agriculture and increasing social cohesion. (EN), AGARE project (Europe for Citizens) 2021-2022 (EN) | With aim is to create a space of cooperation for the social sustainability of European rural territories, in order to improve the conditions for the participation of citizens in rural areas, promoting actions of social commitment that encourage socio-economic development in small municipalities of the European Union and the fight against aging and depopulation, and solutions and the possibilities offered by association and cooperation, as a way of sustainable rural development in the EU.
The acquired knowledge will be used in Danube wood(s) about how sustainable and well-supported rural programs can positively solve social and economic issues, and what are the employment opportunities in those areas and how to ensure sustainable rural development. (EN), Rural Tourism for Mountain Destinations, EU – IPA CBC BiH - MNE (2020 - 2022) (EN) | Danube wood(s) will capitalize the experiences of developing tourism in rural areas. (EN), Transhumance – New Tourism Offer of Kosovo and Montenegro, EU – IPA CBC MNE-KS (2020 - 2022) (EN) | Danube wood(s) will captalize the experiences of developing new tourism offers and benefit from contacts established. (EN), CRinMA – Cultural resources in the mountain areas - Interreg Europe, (2017 – 2021) (EN) | The aim of CRinMA was to improve the regional policies in order to provide better support for the mountain areas with intangible and tangible cultural resources.
Danube wood(s) will built upon the experiences made and the contatcs established. (EN), Tourage - Developing Senior Tourism in Remote Regions – Interreg IVC (2012 – 2014) (EN) | During the project, the awareness and acknowledging of the need of “age-sensitive tourism products” was increased among actors. As a result, new policy solutions was available and use all over EU.
Danube wood(s) will benefit from experiences with regard to include vulnerable groups. (EN),  DTP1-1-311-2.2 NETWORLD - Networking in preserving the First World War multicultural heritage in the Danube countries, supported by the Danube Transnational Programme (EN) | NETWORLD project contributed towards the DTP programme objectives SO 2.2 strengthening the joint and integrated approaches in preserving and managing the World War 1 cultural heritage and resources in the Danube region as a basis for sustainable development and growth, increasing mobility, sustainability, common remembering, and cultural tourism.
Danube wood(s) can capitalize from the experiences in promoting cultural heritage t target groups. (EN), PIRT "Promoting Innovative Rural Tourism in the Black Sea Basin region. supported by JOP Black Sea Basin 2007-2014 (EN) | There were 4 groups of activities, incl. but not limited to training of local service providers (LSP) active in rural tourism, exchanges & study tours for LSP and travel agencies, work with educational authorities and government bodies to incorporate the new product in tourism training curricula and policy measures, and other activities, carried out by the four partnering organizations VEDA (Bulgaria), HEIFER Project International (Georgia), Gumushane Educational Authorities (Turkey) and HEIFER Project International (Armenia).
Danube wood(s) can build upon the lessons learnt in promoting new tourism products. (EN), Integrated project Cudalbi 2020 - 2017- 2020, funded by European Social Fund, Operational Program for Human Capital. (EN) | The general objective: reducing the number of people at risk of poverty and social exclusion from Cudalbi, Galati county, through integrated employment measurements, supporting entrepreneurship (20 start-ups in non-agricultural field), providing medico-social-educational services, activities to improve living conditions offering legal assistances for 750 people.

Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

EUStrategyDanubeRegion Project contributes to EUSDR Pillar 1: Connecting the Danube Region – smart and sustainable, Priority Area 3 Culture & Tourism with development of innovative culture-wood related products and services, comprised in the Transnational culture wood-route (SO2, Activity 2.2 & 2.3).
Project will also contribute to the EUSDR TARGET 1 of Establishing the Danube region as important European tourist destination and further develop and strengthen the Danube Brand for the entire Danube Region (SO1, Activity 1.2).
Project will also contribute EUSDR TARGET 3: Establish the Danube as a transnational cultural and natural travel route - this will be supported directly by establishment of Danube wood-routes (SO2, Activity 2.4).
Project will contribute to EUSDR Target 5 - creating a ‘Blue Book’ on Danube cultural identity/Build on cultural diversity and heritage as the strength of the Danube region as tourism resources (SO1, Activity A.1.1)
Project will have positive effect to ensuring sustainable preservation and contemporary interpretation of cultural heritage and natural values (SO3, Activity 3.1 & 3.2).
Project will also develop sustainable forms of tourism, including green wood related tourist products along the Danube region (SO2, Activity 2.4).
Project will promote the development of quality products and innovative forms of tourism and culture (SO2, Activity 2.6 and SO3 Activity 3.3).
Project will contribute to better skilled labour workforce, education and skills development in the areas of tourism and culture for sustainable jobs in the region (SO2, Activity 2.1).
Project will support the BIOEAST initiative - Central and Eastern European initiative for knowledge-based agriculture, aquaculture and forestry in the bio economy with development of tourst wood-culture related routes. In the Danube Strategy support for BIOEAST and development of bioeconomy products is highly appreciated.
EuropeanGreenDeal The European Green Deal noted, that forest ecosystems are under increasing pressure, as a result of climate change. The EU’s forested area needs to improve, both in quality and quantity, for the EU to reach climate neutrality and a healthy environment.
Proposed project will support European Green Deal with improving the resilience of forests by developing wood-routes and and promoting the circular bio-economy based on wooden cultural products.
TerritorialAgenda2030
Territorial Agenda 2'3' is promoting balanced and harmonious territorial development between and within countries, regions, cities and municipalities, as well as ensuring a future for all places and people in Europe. Project will contribute to more balanced territorial development with supporting tourism development and diversification (wood routes and tourism products) of some of the most underdeveloped regions of the Danube area.
Project will also build on important regional cultural assets and landscapes as well as natural habitats and ecological corridors. Wood-routes will also contribute to long-term development and competitiveness for places.

Other The project will contribute to the EU Forest Strategy for 2030 provisions Chapter 2, Supporting the socio-economic functions of forests for thriving rural areas and boosting forest-based bio-economy within sustainability boundaries, having a direct impact on the following strategic directions
(i) promoting a sustainable forest bio economy that enable a high value added by local and traditional wood processing,
(ii) developing skills and empowering people for sustainable forest-based bioeconomy and
(iii) create new alliance between the professionals of tourism and foresters, involving the tourism organization and the network for Europe’s natural and cultural heritage.
