Description (EN):

The MACRO CLEAN project is a collaborative initiative involving partners; Sinop University and Marmara Municipalities Union (MMU) from Turkey, Batumi State University from Georgia and Shumen University from Bulgaria. The project focuses on researching and establishing pilot implementations for the economic utilization of macroalgae while preventing and mitigating the impact of human activities on eutrophication and macroalgae blooms in the Black Sea region. The overall objective of the project is to develop a comprehensive research methodology for studying macroalgae, enhance laboratory infrastructure, develop feasibility plans for macroalgae utilization, raise awareness among stakeholders and promote collaboration and innovative cleaning processes and technologies. The project aims to bring about a positive change in the current situation by contributing to the economic utilization of macroalgae, mitigating the impact of eutrophication and promoting sustainable resource utilization in the Black Sea region. The common challenge the project tackles is the issue of eutrophication and macroalgae blooms in the Black Sea. These challenges are caused by factors such as land-based pollution and changes in marine living resources. The project aims to address these challenges through a comprehensive approach that includes research, capacity building, feasibility assessments, awareness raising and collaboration. The main outputs and results of the project include: 1. Comprehensive research methodology: The project will develop a robust research methodology for studying macroalgae, including clear objectives, standardized protocols and effective data management practices. 2. Modernized laboratory infrastructure: The project will enhance the laboratory infrastructure in partner universities to support comprehensive research on macroalgae, including equipment and capacity building support for researchers. 3. Feasibility plans: The project will develop feasibility plans to assess the technical, financial, economic and social viability of pilot implementations for macroalgae utilization, specifically in the production of fertilizer and bioplastics. 4. Stakeholder awareness: The project will raise awareness among stakeholders and target groups about macroalgae-related issues, eutrophication and sustainable resource utilization through workshops, training sessions, clean-up events and an international conference. 5. Methodologies and technologies report: The project will compile a report on methodologies and technologies for macroalgae and eutrophication collection and cleaning, providing valuable insights on best practices and technological advancements. 6. Start-up support: The project will provide training and mentoring sessions for selected start-ups, supporting their business and product development in the macroalgae sector. The planned approach of the project involves activities such as establishing research teams, developing research methodologies, conducting fieldwork and laboratory analyses, implementing action plans organizing workshops and training sessions and facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration. Transnational cooperation is needed to achieve the project objectives and results because the challenges faced in the Black Sea region, such as eutrophication and macroalgae blooms, transcend national boundaries. The pollution and degradation of the Black Sea are caused by activities within its catchment area, requiring a coordinated effort among different countries to effectively address the root causes and mitigate the impacts. Collaboration among partners from multiple countries is essential to share knowledge, resources and best practices, as well as to foster innovation and promote sustainable solutions at a regional level.

SNU created a WhatsApp group for partners’ communication and MMU created social media accounts (YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Instagram, Facebook) for project visibility. These accounts were activated on YouTube (MacroCleanProject), LinkedIn (Macro Clean Project), X (macroclean_), Instagram (macroclean project) and Facebook (Macro Clean Project). Additionally, MMU purchased the domain www.macroclean.org for the project website. SNU developed the project logo and promotional materials (https://sinop.edu.tr/; https://macroclean.sinop.edu.tr/). Project information was shared on the project website, as well as on the ShU and BSU websites, including the Current Research Information System. Prior to the kick-off meeting, partners conducted self-assessments, need assessments for research capacity reports and discussions on expert selection. SNU organized the kick-off meeting (November 4-6, 2024) in Sinop, where project activities, budget, research methodology and the selection of Steering Committee (SC) members were discussed. Partners contributed to decision-making structure and SC formation to facilitate coordination, communication, monitoring, problem solving, etc. Additionally, partners presented macroalgae studies and project communication efforts at the meeting.SNU published press release on its website and news published in all local newspapers in Sinop. On Nov 7-8, 2024, SNU hosted the capacity-building study on; research methodology, laboratory analysis and best practices for macroalgae, fertilizers and bioplastics. During this meeting, the drafted research methodology and road map was determined and discussions were held on project activities and implementation stages. All partners decided to purchase the necessary equipment to perform pollution, fertilizer and bioplastic tests and analyzes in existing laboratories and the partners formulated the technical specifications together. Research team focused their research on the dominant macroalgae, Ulva spp. and Cystoseira spp. Partners started procurements, some of the tenders awarded and contracts signed, some of the services and supplies already delivered, according to this; SNU; launched a scientific expertise tender, initiated and completed the procurement of laboratory equipment and established a greenhouse setup at the SNU Fisheries Faculty. Project consultancy and dissemination plan services also contracted and first progress report of the contractor received. Kick off & capacity building events organisation services contracted and the services executed and the payments done to the contractor. MMU completed procurements for supplies, communication and consultancy services. Supplies already delivered and payment done. First progress report of the consultacy services received and payment done SHU; awarded a public procurement with four separate positions: No. 1: "Laboratory equipment"; No. 2: "Computer equipment"; No. 3: "Video equipment"; No. 4: "Greenhouse equipment and supplies". BSU; BSU managed to launch only tender for purchase “Laptops for studies, portable data management” and “Camera for field works and observations” (single tender), tender procurement will be finished in report period #2. Accordingly it was used small amount of costs in this period. During the reporting period, MMU engaged with Istanbul and Sakarya Metropolitan Municipalities regarding macroalgae research; developed communication strategy presentation for partners; began identifying macroalgae research institutions and municipalities in Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, France, Portugal, China and Japan; developed and shared “Info and Study Visit Details of MacroClean” document with relevant stakeholders; created Methodologies and Technologies Report Interview Draft" and initiated contact with potential interviewees and conducted an online questionnaire to schedule interviews. . An event was organised in Varna by JS/MA and PP3 showed participation; an online meeting was conducted regarding the Macro Clean Technologies and Methodologies Report; SHU engaged with the local community by participating in the Veliki Preslav conference. During the second reporting period, LP established the scientific research team including 2 macroalgae experts, a biologist, a chemist, an agricultural engineer, a statistics expert, and two assistants, aligned with the agreed “Research Methodology and Road Map.” Research parameters and methods were reviewed and finalized through self-assessments and discussions at a capacity-building meeting. A comprehensive guide was drafted covering measurement and research protocols—including biomass collection, analyses of seawater, macroalgae, and sediments, nutrient studies, and fertilizer and bioplastic trials—which is near completion, pending the addition of sampling maps from ShU and BSU. Sampling areas with the highest macroalgae density were identified, and in April, the first of four planned annual field studies was conducted by SNU team, collecting Ulva spp. and Cystoseira sp., water and sediment samples. Laboratory equipment was installed and calibrated, the greenhouse setup was finalized and laboratory analyses commenced on algae samples prepared for nutrient, metal, fertilizer and bioplastic studies. All project data was systematically managed via OneDrive. Additionally, SNU prepared the project dissemination plan and the team actively supported communication efforts by sharing sampling visuals, participating in an online dissemination training and implementing the dissemination plan. MMU project team focused on extensive stakeholder engagement across Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, France, Portugal, China, and Japan, so as to organize study visits for July and August to coincide with macroalgal blooms for on-site observations and interviews. MMU also advanced communication outreach by sharing images and videos from SNU, BSU, and ShU sampling events on social media and by creating widely viewed infographics on macroalgae applications. They launched the project website with multilingual support (English and Turkish), established social media channels on Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube, took part in dissemination training. Meanwhile, at ShU, capacity-building activities and consultations with experts continued, resulting in the preparation and announcement of a public procurement for technical expertise. Procurements from the first period were finalized with contracts for computer and video equipment completed and greenhouse equipment acquired. Due to higher-than-anticipated costs from an initial market survey for sampling and analysis, a second market research was conducted, and preparations began for a new procurement. ShU representatives also engaged in online dissemination training and regular partner meetings, promoting knowledge exchange and project coordination. For communication, ShU maintained high project visibility through consistent use of the unified logo, installation of a project banner at the main university entrance, and dedicated sections on the university’s official websites and media channels. The project was actively promoted at the 13th Student Scientific Conference on "Ecology and Environment," in meetings with students and faculty, and during school visits, open days, and candidate student events—effectively reaching target audiences and strengthening ShU’s role in fostering scientific dialogue on sustainability. Finally, BSU initiated several tenders and finalized in May, including for forming the research team, purchasing laboratory equipment. Additional tenders announced in May, such as for car rental and for boat and diver hire for a cleanup event, are expected to conclude by the end of the month. A project presentation was held on April 30, 2025, at BSU, introducing the main objectives and activities to professors, students and stakeholders. Communication efforts included publishing a press release on the university’s official website, broadening the project’s visibility and outreach (https://bsu.edu.ge/main/page/22154/index.html).

Other PARIS AGGREMEENT on CLIMATE CHANGE
The MACRA CLEAN project focuses on preventing and mitigating the impact of human activities on eutrophication and macroalgae blooms. By addressing the root causes of eutrophication, such as land-based pollution and changes in marine living resources, the project aims to reduce the release of greenhouse gases and other pollutants that contribute to climate change.
The project aims to research and establish pilot implementations for the economic utilization of macroalgae. Macroalgae can serve as a valuable resource for the production of fertilizers and bioplastics, which have the potential to replace more carbon-intensive alternatives. By promoting sustainable resource utilization, the project contributes to the transition to a low-carbon and circular economy, which is a key objective of the Paris Agreement.

Other UN- SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The Macro Clean Project contributes to several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its activities and objectives as follows;
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: The project focuses on the economic utilization of macroalgae, including the production of fertilizers and bioplastics. By developing feasibility plans, supporting start-ups and organizing entrepreneurship programs, the project promotes innovation, supports the growth of sustainable industries and contributes to the development of infrastructure for sustainable resource utilization.
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production: The project aims to develop sustainable practices for macroalgae utilization, including the production of fertilizers and bioplastics. Goal 14: Life Below Water: The project's objective of mitigating the impact of human activities on eutrophication and macroalgae blooms contributes to the conservation and sustainable use of marine ecosystems. By raising awareness, conducting clean-up events and implementing methodologies for macroalgae collection and cleaning, the project helps preserve marine biodiversity and ecosystems.
Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals: The Macro Clean Project involves transnational cooperation among partner universities and waste management authorities from Turkey, Georgia and Bulgaria. This collaboration fosters knowledge exchange, capacity building and the sharing of best practices. By promoting partnerships and collaboration, the project strengthens the overall effectiveness and impact of its activities.
