Description (EN):

The objective is Enhancing protection and preservation of the natural protected areas in the Bulgarian-Romanian cross-border region, through development of a pilot system for monitoring, prevention and reaction to water pollution, caused from shipping on the Danube river. The project meets the needs of the population and the partners of improvement of the control in the inland waterways of Romania and Bulgaria and will contribute to improved cooperation and joint solutions in nature protection. The activities of the project are: 1. Establishment of a pilot system for monitoring, prevention and reaction to water pollution 2. Tools for monitoring, prevention and reaction to water pollution 3. Development of a procedure for joint monitoring and response activities in case of water pollution The expected outputs of the project are: - Improved organization's cooperation across borders - Developed jointly and implemented Pilot action for monitoring, prevention and reaction to pollution - Implemented tools for mitigating pollution

Expected Achievements (EN):

The joint activities will define and improve the risk management and the coordination between the institutions of the cross-border region of Bulgaria and Romania for the prevention of the coastal pollution, caused from shipping on the Danube river. The main aim of the project is to cover the protected areas for which the high-speed boat, off-road vehicle and one ship base (pontoon) will be used. These locations will be consistent with the forces available to EAMA on the river in Ruse and RNA in Drobeta, Gruja, Giurgevo and Kitchu/Kalarash. Reaction in case of: - the river by oil products spill as well as other hazard and noxious substances as a result of shipping activity. Such disastrous events usually lead to contamination and water pollution in the areas of the ports and are particularly dangerous in the areas with water catchment (captivity) – source of water supply to large groups of citizens. Such unwanted events cause damage to the flora and fauna inherent in the Danube region. - Emergency in transport of radioactive and toxic cargoes on the river - particularly dangerous for the transport of used or fresh enriched nuclear fuel for the needs of the nuclear power industry. - Fire on board a vessel - this emergency situation can lead to human casualties and fuel-lubrication spill over board in large quantities. - Cross-border pollution - usually occurring in major accidents in neighbouring Danube countries and the measures taken cover the institutions of more than one country. The implementation of the project will provide the opportunity for reducing all types of pollution, by supporting investments in monitoring and data collection on air, soil and water pollution. The conducted and acquainted under the project works, infrastructure and equipment will enhance the immediate monitoring, prevention and reaction in case of river pollution from shipping, in particular to the natural protected areas. Environmental conditions are to be enhanced, along with the health and life of the population.
