OBIWAN aims at converting organic waste streams into advanced chemicals and sustainable aviation fuels. After an initial anaerobic digestion for biogas production, a mixture of CH4 and CO2, the further chemical conversion will harness the CO2 in the final products. Excess carbon is then captured as solid carbon with applications in, e.g., gas cleaning and tires. In this manner, OBIWAN will generate technology to mitigate climate change, not only by avoiding greenhouse gas emissions but also by turning such gases into valuable products. The key priorities in the strategic vision of the Interreg program addressed by OBIWAN are circular economy, development of innovative technologies supporting adaptation to climate change, reduction of all types of land, air and water pollution and waste recycling. The entire value chain as well as individual parts thereof created within OBIWAN will be of impact on waste collecting and management companies. Also energy companies and airports will be affected. The concerned companies situate themselves on the multinational as well as on the SME level. Particularly farmers will be able to apply the developed technology and reduce their emissions (e.g., nitrogen). While the European Green Deal and the ‘Fit for 55’ program aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55%, this does not mean that all carbon-based products will be phased out. E.g., sustainable aviation fuels are expected to play a major rule in a sustainable European future, especially if the carbon needed to produce them can be sourced within the region (Europe) rather than from distant, and often politically less stable, locations – as it is the case for fossil carbon. Organic waste related to human activity and, hence, largely available in densely populated areas such as the regions involved in the programme (Flanders, Wallonia and Hauts-de-France), is converted by Anaerobic digestion (AD) into biogas, a mixture of CH4 (biomethane) and CO2 (bio-carbon dioxide). While at present biogas is mainly employed for its calorific value it has a high potential for chemical/fuels production by converting methane into hydrogen (H2) and solid carbon via pyrolysis, and subsequently hydrogenating the carbon dioxide into methanol, i.e., a sustainable aviation fuel precursor, using the obtained H 2.. The competences required to successfully achieve the OBIWAN objectives are present at partners situated over the involved regions: Hauts-de-France (biogas production, catalysis), Flanders (chemical/catalytic reaction engineering, reactor and process design) and Wallonia (gas treatment, gas separation and analysis). The need for the cross-border approach of the project thus presents itself both because of the issues and opportunities for the region (availability of organic waste streams and impact to be generated with the envisioned end products) and because of the unique partnership across borders. Major innovations are targeted within the project: 1) The conversion of biogas into chemicals/fuels ideally requires a biogas composition of 60% CH4 and 40% CO2 with a minimum of impurities. Considering the variance in substrate types and their seasonal changes, it is a major challenge, even at laboratory scale, to produce biogas with a stable composition. That is why the experimental measurements will be complemented by the development of an innovative numerical tool to simulate the process and give relevant control of the reactors to ensure the stable biogas production in terms of both production rate and gas composition. 2) The catalytic decomposition of methane into solid carbon with a H2 rich gas as a side product is lately gaining popularity for the production of s-called ‘turquoise’ hydrogen of high quality. However, this typically comes at the expense of the solid carbon properties. Within OBIWAN, the aim is to bring the hydrogen-focused process from the laboratory scale to an industrially relevant one for which the proof of concept will be demonstrated in an original Electrothermal Fluidized Bed Reactor (ETFB). Other significant innovations will be made with respect to biogas purification/separation as well as CO2 hydrogenation into methanol.

OBIWAN richt zich op het omzetten van organische afvalstromen in geavanceerde chemicaliën en duurzame vliegtuigbrandstoffen. Na een eerste anaerobe vergisting voor de productie van biogas, een mengsel van CH4 en CO2, zal de verdere chemische omzetting de CO2 in de eindproducten benutten. Overtollige koolstof wordt dan vastgelegd als vaste koolstof met toepassingen in bijvoorbeeld gasreiniging en autobanden. Op deze manier zal OBIWAN technologie genereren om de klimaatverandering te beperken, niet alleen door de uitstoot van broeikasgassen te vermijden, maar ook door dergelijke gassen om te zetten in waardevolle producten. De belangrijkste prioriteiten in de strategische visie van het Interreg-programma waarop OBIWAN zich richt, zijn circulaire economie, ontwikkeling van innovatieve technologieën ter ondersteuning van de aanpassing aan klimaatverandering, vermindering van alle vormen van vervuiling van land, lucht en water en afvalrecycling. De volledige waardeketen en de afzonderlijke onderdelen ervan die binnen OBIWAN worden gecreëerd, zullen van invloed zijn op bedrijven die afval inzamelen en beheren. Ook energiebedrijven en luchthavens zullen beïnvloed worden. De betrokken bedrijven bevinden zich zowel op multinationaal als op MKB-niveau. Vooral landbouwers zullen de ontwikkelde technologie kunnen toepassen en hun emissies (bv. stikstof) kunnen verminderen. Hoewel de Europese Green Deal en het 'Fit for 55'-programma tot doel hebben de uitstoot van broeikasgassen met 55% te verminderen, betekent dit niet dat alle op koolstof gebaseerde producten zullen worden uitgefaseerd. Er wordt bijvoorbeeld verwacht dat duurzame vliegtuigbrandstoffen een belangrijke rol zullen spelen in een duurzame Europese toekomst, vooral als de koolstof die nodig is om ze te produceren binnen de regio (Europa) kan worden gewonnen in plaats van uit verre en vaak politiek minder stabiele locaties - zoals het geval is bij fossiele bronnen. Organisch afval dat verband houdt met menselijke activiteit en dus grotendeels beschikbaar is in dichtbevolkte gebieden zoals de regio's die betrokken zijn bij het programma (Vlaanderen, Wallonië en Hauts-de-France), wordt door Anaerobe vergisting (AD) omgezet in biogas, een mengsel van CH4 (biomethaan) en CO2 (biokoolstofdioxide). Hoewel biogas momenteel voornamelijk gebruikt wordt voor zijn calorische waarde, heeft het een groot potentieel voor chemische/brandstofproductie door methaan om te zetten in waterstof (H2) en vaste koolstof via pyrolyse, en vervolgens de koolstofdioxide te hydrogeneren in methanol, d.w.z. een duurzame precursor voor vliegtuigbrandstof, met behulp van de verkregen H 2. De competenties die nodig zijn om de OBIWAN-doelstellingen met succes te bereiken, zijn aanwezig bij partners in de betrokken regio's: Hauts-de-France (biogasproductie, katalyse), Vlaanderen (chemische/katalytische reactietechniek, reactor- en procesontwerp) en Wallonië (gasbehandeling, gasscheiding en analyse). De noodzaak van de grensoverschrijdende aanpak van het project blijkt dus zowel uit de problemen en kansen voor de regio (beschikbaarheid van organische afvalstromen en de impact die de beoogde eindproducten zullen hebben) als uit de unieke grensoverschrijdende samenwerking. Het project richt zich op twee belangrijke innovaties: 1) De omzetting van biogas in chemicaliën/brandstoffen vereist idealiter een biogassamenstelling van 60% CH4 en 40% CO2 met een minimum aan onzuiverheden.Gezien de variatie in substraattypes en hun seizoensgebonden veranderingen, is het een grote uitdaging, zelfs op laboratoriumschaal, om biogas met een stabiele samenstelling te produceren.Daarom zullen de experimentele metingen worden aangevuld met de ontwikkeling van een innovatief numeriek instrument om het proces te simuleren en de reactoren op relevante wijze te regelen om een stabiele biogasproductie te garanderen, zowel wat betreft de productiesnelheid als de gassamenstelling. 2) De katalytische ontbinding van methaan in vaste koolstof met een H2-rijk gas als nevenproduct wint de laatste tijd aan populariteit voor de productie van zogenaamde 'turkooizen' waterstof van hoge kwaliteit. Dit gaat echter meestal ten koste van de eigenschappen van de vaste koolstof. Binnen OBIWAN is het de bedoeling om het waterstofgerichte proces van laboratoriumschaal naar industrieel relevante schaal te brengen, waarvoor het proof of concept zal worden gedemonstreerd in een originele Electrothermal Fluidized Bed Reactor (ETFB). Andere belangrijke innovaties zullen worden gerealiseerd met betrekking tot de zuivering/scheiding van biogas en CO2-hydrogenering tot methanol.

OBIWAN vise à convertir les flux de déchets organiques en produits chimiques avancés et en carburants aéronautiques durables. Après une digestion anaérobie initiale pour la production de biogaz, un mélange de CH4 et de CO2, la conversion chimique ultérieure permettra d'exploiter le CO2 dans les produits finaux. Le carbone excédentaire est ensuite capturé sous forme de carbone solide avec des applications, par exemple, dans l'épuration des gaz et les pneus. De cette manière, OBIWAN produira une technologie permettant d'atténuer le changement climatique, non seulement en évitant les émissions de gaz à effet de serre, mais aussi en transformant ces gaz en produits de valeur. Les priorités clés de la vision stratégique du programme Interreg abordées par OBIWAN sont l'économie circulaire, le développement de technologies innovantes soutenant l'adaptation au changement climatique, la réduction de tous les types de pollution des sols, de l'air et de l'eau et le recyclage des déchets. L'ensemble de la chaîne de valeur ainsi que ses différentes parties créées dans le cadre d'OBIWAN auront un impact sur les entreprises de collecte et de gestion des déchets. Les entreprises du secteur de l'énergie et les aéroports seront également concernés. Les entreprises concernées se situent au niveau des multinationales et des PME. Les agriculteurs, en particulier, seront en mesure d'appliquer la technologie développée et de réduire leurs émissions (par exemple, l'azote). Si le Green Deal européen et le programme "Fit for 55" visent à réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre de 55 %, cela ne signifie pas que tous les produits à base de carbone seront progressivement éliminés. Par exemple, les carburants durables pour l'aviation devraient jouer un rôle majeur dans un avenir européen durable, en particulier si le carbone nécessaire à leur production peut être obtenu dans la région (Europe) plutôt que dans des lieux éloignés et souvent politiquement moins stables, comme c'est le cas pour les ressources fossiles. Les déchets organiques liés à l'activité humaine et, par conséquent, largement disponibles dans les zones densément peuplées telles que les régions impliquées dans le programme (Flandre, Wallonie et Hauts-de-France), sont convertis par digestion anaérobie (DA) en biogaz, un mélange de CH4 (biométhane) et de CO2 (dioxyde de carbone biologique). Bien qu'actuellement le biogaz soit principalement utilisé pour son pouvoir calorifique, il présente un potentiel élevé pour la production de produits chimiques/carburants en convertissant le méthane en hydrogène (H2) et en carbone solide par pyrolyse, puis en hydrogénant le dioxyde de carbone en méthanol, c'est-à-dire un précurseur de carburant aviation durable, en utilisant le H2 obtenu. Les compétences nécessaires pour atteindre les objectifs d'OBIWAN sont présentes chez les partenaires situés dans les régions concernées : Hauts-de-France (production de biogaz, catalyse), Flandre (ingénierie des réactions chimiques/catalytiques, conception de réacteurs et de procédés) et Wallonie (traitement des gaz, séparation et analyse des gaz). La nécessité de l'approche transfrontalière du projet se présente donc à la fois en raison des enjeux et des opportunités pour la région (disponibilité des flux de déchets organiques et impact à générer avec les produits finaux envisagés) et en raison du partenariat transfrontalier unique. Deux innovations majeures sont visées par le projet : 1) La conversion du biogaz en produits chimiques/carburants nécessite idéalement une composition de biogaz de 60% CH4 et 40% CO2 avec un minimum d'impuretés. Compte tenu de la variance des types de substrats et de leurs changements saisonniers, c'est un défi majeur, même à l'échelle du laboratoire, de produire du biogaz avec une composition stable. C'est pourquoi les mesures expérimentales seront complétées par le développement d'un outil numérique innovant permettant de simuler le processus et d'assurer un contrôle pertinent des réacteurs afin de garantir une production de biogaz stable en termes de taux de production et de composition du gaz. 2) La décomposition catalytique du méthane en carbone solide avec un gaz riche en H2 comme produit secondaire gagne récemment en popularité pour la production d'hydrogène dit "turquoise" de haute qualité. Cependant, cela se fait généralement au détriment des propriétés du carbone solide. Dans le cadre d'OBIWAN, l'objectif est de faire passer le processus axé sur l'hydrogène de l'échelle du laboratoire à celle de l'industrie. La preuve de concept sera démontrée dans un réacteur à lit fluidisé électrothermique (ETFB) original. D'autres innovations importantes seront apportées en ce qui concerne la purification/séparation du biogaz ainsi que l'hydrogénation du CO2 en méthanol.

Expected Achievements (EN):

The objective of this module is the coordination of cross-border cooperation, which can be divided into monitoring of project planning and achievement of project objectives, maintaining interaction with members of the Industrial Advisory Board and facilitating contact with the funding body. Responsibility for project management lies with the project coordinator (Prof. Joris Thybaut, UGent). He will be assisted by a project manager (Dr. Elisabeth Delbeke) for the day-to-day management of the project at administrative level. The project manager will also be responsible for cooperation with associated partners, communication with the Industry Advisory Board and interaction with the funding body. The communication part of this work package is twofold: On the one hand, it focuses on internal communication in order to facilitate the management and monitoring of the project. On the other hand, the external dissemination to the industrial actors of the region and to a large (scientific) public, both in the region and beyond, is also the subject of work. The training aspect is also developed here for doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows from the various project partners as well as for a wider (scientific) audience. The training aspect will be mainly addressed in the workshops that will be organised as part of the project. In addition, the project will also ensure that researchers are involved in topics on which they do not work themselves, through courses, guest lectures and webinars. The first objective of this module is the conversion of organic waste into biogas of stable composition by anaerobic digestion (60% in CH4 and 40% in CO2). This will be achieved by developing a dynamic control system to regulate the process. This system will be validated during a second stage on an experimental pilot available in the mutual ‘biogas – anaerobic digestion’ platform of the UTC and UniLaSalle. Biogas is mainly composed of CH4 and CO2 as well as various impurities (H2S, volatile organic compounds, siloxanes ...). Therefore, for the use of biogas for the production of H2 and carbon, a purification step for the removal of impurities and a separation step will be required to achieve the required purity of CH4. These steps, which correspond to the second objective of the module, will also be studied. The main objective of this module is to pyrolyze methane to hydrogen and solid carbon via an electrothermal fluidised bed reactor in the presence of carbon-based catalysts. Subsequently, the hydrogen produced during pyrolysis will be used for the recovery of CO2 into methanol. The optimisation of these chemical reactions will be based on the development of models for the elementary steps for kinetics as well as for the reactor. These models are a key step in the implementation of an optimised process.

Het doel van dit werkpakket is de coördinatie van de grensoverschrijdende samenwerking wat opgedeeld kan worden in de opvolging van de projectplanning en realisatie van de projectdoelen, het onderhouden van de interactie met de leden van de industriële adviesraad en het contact faciliteren met de financierende instantie. De verantwoordelijkheid voor het projectbeheer ligt bij de projectcoördinator (Prof. Joris Thybaut, UGent). Hij zal bijgestaan worden door een project manager (dr. Elisabeth Delbeke) voor het dagelijkse beheer van het project op administratief vlak. De project manager zal eveneens instaan voor de samenwerking met de geassocieerde partners, de communicatie naar de industriële adviesraad toe en de interactie met de financierende instantie. Het deel van dit werkpakket rond communicatie is tweeledig: Enerzijds wordt er ingezet op interne communicatie om het beheer en de opvolging van het project te faciliteren. Anderzijds wordt er ook werk gemaakt van een externe disseminatie naar zowel de industriële actoren binnen de regio als naar een breed (wetenschappelijk) publiek, zowel binnen de regio als daarbuiten. Anderzijds wordt hier ook het opleidingsaspect uitgewerkt voor zowel doctoraatstudenten en postdocs bij de verschillende projectpartners alsook voor een breder (wetenschappelijk) publiek. Het opleidingsaspect zal in de eerste plaats aan bod komen in de workshops die georganiseerd zullen worden in het kader van het project. Daarnaast zal er binnen het project ook aandacht worden besteed om de onderzoekers ook te betrekken bij de onderwerpen waar ze zelf niet werkzaam rond zijn, aan de hand van cursussen, gastlezingen en webinars. Het eerste doel van dit werkpakket is het omzetten van organisch afval in biogas van stabiele samenstelling door anaerobe vergisting (60% CH4 en 40% CO2). Dit doel zal worden bereikt door een dynamisch regelsysteem te ontwikkelen om het proces te regelen. Dit systeem zal in een tweede fase worden gevalideerd op een experimentele pilot die beschikbaar is in het gezamenlijke platform "biogas - anaerobe vergisting" van UTC en UniLaSalle. Biogas bestaat voornamelijk uit CH4 en CO2 en verschillende onzuiverheden (H2S, vluchtige organische verbindingen, siloxanen, enz.). Om biogas te gebruiken voor de productie van H2 en koolstof is dus een zuiveringsfase nodig om onzuiverheden te verwijderen en een scheidingsfase om de vereiste zuiverheid van CH4 te bereiken. Deze stappen, die overeenkomen met de tweede doelstelling van de module, zullen ook worden bestudeerd. Het hoofddoel van dit werkpakket is om methaan te pyrolyseren in waterstof en vaste koolstof met behulp van een elektrothermische wervelbedreactor in aanwezigheid van katalysatoren op basis van koolstof. De waterstof die tijdens de pyrolyse wordt geproduceerd, zal vervolgens worden gebruikt om CO2 om te zetten in methanol. De optimalisatie van deze chemische reacties zal gebaseerd zijn op de ontwikkeling van modellen voor de elementaire kinetische fasen en voor de reactor. Deze modellen zijn een belangrijke stap in het opzetten van een geoptimaliseerd proces.

L'objectif de ce module est la coordination de la coopération transfrontalière, qui peut être divisée en suivi de la planification du projet et de la réalisation des objectifs du projet, le maintien de l'interaction avec les membres du conseil consultatif industriel et la facilitation du contact avec l'organisme de financement. La responsabilité de la gestion du projet incombe au coordinateur du projet (Prof. Joris Thybaut, UGent). Il sera assisté par un chef de projet (Dr Elisabeth Delbeke) pour la gestion quotidienne du projet au niveau administratif. Le chef de projet sera également responsable de la coopération avec les partenaires associés, de la communication avec le conseil consultatif industriel et de l'interaction avec l'organisme de financement. La partie de ce module de travail consacrée à la communication est double : D'une part, elle se concentre sur la communication interne afin de faciliter la gestion et le suivi du projet. D'autre part, la diffusion externe auprès des acteurs industriels de la région et d'un large public (scientifique), à la fois dans la région et au-delà, fait également l'objet d'un travail. L'aspect formation est également développé ici pour les étudiants en doctorat et les post-doctorants des différents partenaires du projet ainsi que pour un public (scientifique) plus large. L'aspect formation sera principalement abordé dans les ateliers qui seront organisés dans le cadre du projet. En outre, dans le cadre du projet, on veillera également à impliquer les chercheurs dans les sujets sur lesquels ils ne travaillent pas eux-mêmes, au moyen de cours, de conférences invitées et de webinaires. Le premier objectif de ce module est la conversion de déchets organiques en biogaz de composition stable par la digestion anaérobie (60% en CH4 et 40% en CO2). Le développement d’un système de contrôle dynamique pour réguler le procédé permettra d’atteindre cet objectif. Ce système sera validé lors d’une seconde étape sur un pilote expérimental disponible dans la plateforme mutuelle de « biogaz – anaerobic digestion » de l’UTC et d’UniLaSalle. Le biogaz est composé majoritairement de CH4 et CO2 ainsi que de différentes impuretés (H2S, composés organiques volatiles, siloxanes …). Par conséquent pour l’utilisation du biogaz pour la production d’H2 et carbone, une étape de purification pour l’élimination des impuretés et une étape de séparation seront nécessaires pour atteindre la pureté requise du CH4. Ces étapes, qui correspond au second objectif du module, seront également étudiées. Le principal objectif de cette module est d’effectuer la pyrolyse du méthane en hydrogène et en carbone solide via un réacteur à lit fluidisé electro thermique en présence de catalyseurs à base de carbone. Par la suite, l’hydrogène produit lors de la pyrolyse sera utilisé pour la valorisation du CO2 en méthanol. L’optimisation ce ces réactions chimiques s’appuiera sur le développement de modèles pour les étapes élémentaires pour la cinétique ainsi que pour le réacteur. Ces modèles constituent un étape clé pour la mise en place d’un procédé optimisé.

COMPOVERT (NL), COMPOVERT (FR) | Les projets transfrontaliers COMPOVERT et OBIWAN s’inscrivent tous les deux dans une stratégie d’économie circulaire avec un focus sur l’économie biosourcée. Cette dernière renvoie à l’ensemble des activités de production et de transformation de la biomasse en produits et matériaux biosourcés d’une part et en bioénergies d’autre part.
Le projet COMPOVERT s’attache à la valorisation des matériaux lignocellulosiques incluant les fibres naturelles et la lignine dans des applications biocomposites. Le projet OBIWAN quant à lui est axé sur la production, purification et séparation de biogaz à partir de déchets organiques en vue d’une conversion en produits chimiques.
Malgré un objectif de valorisation de la biomasse et la présence d’un partenaire et de deux associés communs (Certech, Valbiom, Greenwin), ces projets se distinguent donc fortement en termes de voies de transformation de la biomasse et d’applications visées. Néanmoins les équipes transfrontalières assureront la diffusion et le relais des informations pertinentes pour les deux projets via le site internet ou la page LinkedIn des projets par exemple. Les projets seront donc en liaison les uns avec les autres pour leurs activités de communication, visant à organiser des ateliers conjoints dans le cadre du thème plus large de la bioéconomie. Ceci est décrit plus en détail dans l'activité 2.3 (Interaction avec l'industrie/les parties prenantes) du work package 2 sur la communication et la formation. Het COMPOVERT project richt zich op de ontwikkeling van lignocellulose materialen, inclusief natuurlijke vezels en lignine, voor biocomposiet toepassingen. Het OBIWAN-project richt zich op de productie, zuivering en scheiding van biogas uit organisch afval voor omzetting naar chemische producten.
Ondanks het feit dat het doel is om biomassa te exploiteren en dat ze een partner en twee geassocieerde partners delen (Certech, Valbiom en Greenwin), zijn deze projecten zeer verschillend wat betreft de manieren waarop biomassa wordt getransformeerd en de beoogde toepassingen. Niettemin zullen de grensoverschrijdende teams zorgen voor de verspreiding en doorgifte van informatie die relevant is voor de twee projecten, bijvoorbeeld via de website van het project of de LinkedIn-pagina. De projecten zullen dus voor hun communicatie-activiteiten met elkaar in contact staan en mikken op gezamenlijke workshops die kaderen binnen het bredere thema van de biogebaseerde economie. Dit wordt verder beschreven in Activiteit 2.3 (Interactie met industrie/belanghebbenden) in Werkpakket 2 rond communicatie en opleiding. Universiteit Gent is als partner bij beide projecten betrokken (weliswaar via verschillende onderzoeksgroepen), maar ook hier zijn deze projecten zeer verschillend wat betreft de manieren waarop biomassa wordt getransformeerd en de beoogde toepassingen. Niettemin zullen de grensoverschrijdende teams zorgen voor de verspreiding en doorgifte van informatie die relevant is voor de twee projecten, bijvoorbeeld via de website van het project of de LinkedIn-pagina. Il s'agit de toutes les activités impliquées dans la production et la conversion de la biomasse en produits et matériaux biosourcés, d'une part, et en bioénergie, d'autre part.
Le projet VALCELMAT se concentre sur la modification chimique de la cellulose pour diverses applications telles que les emballages, les textiles et les additifs pour les bioplastiques. Le projet OBIWAN se concentre sur la production, la purification et la séparation du biogaz à partir de déchets organiques en vue de sa conversion en produits chimiques.
L'Université de Gand est impliquée dans les deux projets en tant que partenaire (bien que par le biais de différents groupes de recherche), mais ces projets sont également très différents en termes de méthodes de transformation de la biomasse et d'applications prévues. Néanmoins, les équipes transfrontalières assureront la diffusion et la transmission d'informations pertinentes pour les deux projets, par exemple via le site web du projet ou la page LinkedIn. Les projets seront donc en liaison les uns avec les autres pour leurs activités de communication, visant à organiser des ateliers conjoints dans le cadre du thème plus large de la bioéconomie. (FR), TAKE-OFF (FR), TAKE-OFF (NL) | Het OBIWAN-project is in synergie met het H2020 TAKE-OFF-project, dat zich richt op de omzetting van CO2 in duurzame vliegtuigbrandstof via intermediaire hydrogenering tot lichte olefinen. Activering en terugwinning van CO2 zijn belangrijke doelstellingen van beide projecten. We zijn van plan om gezamenlijke openbare workshops te organiseren en de belangrijkste resultaten van de twee projecten te verspreiden in de pers en via sociale netwerken. (NL), Le projet OBIWAN est en synergie avec le projet H2020 TAKE-OFF qui porte sur la conversion du CO2 en carburant d'aviation durable via une hydrogénation intermédiaire en oléfines légères. L'activation et la valorisation du CO2 sont des objectifs majeurs des deux projets. Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

SeaBasinStrategyNorthSea Het OBIWAN project draagt bij aan de Strategie voor de Noordzeeregio door zowel in te zetten op het reduceren van emissies en het verminderen van afval dat in de Noorzee terecht komt als het produceren en gebruiken van hernieuwbare energie en alternatieve brandstoffen in de Noordzeeregio. Door organische afvalstromen te valoriseren verminderd het risico dat deze in de Noordzee terecht komen en vormen zij bovendien een (lokaal) alternatief voor fossiele grondstoffen wat eveneens leidt tot de reductie van broeikasgas emissies. Eén van de eindproducten die in het project beoogt worden omvat bovendien hernieuwbare luchtvaartbrandstoffen, wat een heel waardevolle alternatieve brandstof zou vormen voor de Noordzeeregio.
EuropeanGreenDeal Le Green Deal européen vise à réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre de 55 %, notamment grâce à l'électrification des véhicules, au chauffage domestique par pompe à chaleur, etc. Cependant, il reste certaines applications pour lesquelles les alternatives sans carbone sont moins évidentes, comme les carburants pour le secteur de l'aviation, les produits chimiques et les matériaux. Alors que les besoins en carbone sont actuellement principalement satisfaits par des sources fossiles, le projet OBIWAN vise à utiliser les déchets organiques pour produire finement des produits chimiques et des carburants durables pour l'aviation par gazéification en biogaz. Les activités menées dans le cadre du projet OBIWAN s'alignent ainsi sur les objectifs du Green Deal en matière d'énergie plus propre et d'innovation dans les technologies propres de pointe, de recyclage des produits et de mobilité efficace et respectueuse de l'environnement.
TerritorialAgenda2030 OBIWAN draagt bij aan de Territoriale Agenda 2030 van alle betrokken regio’s. In de eerste plaats mikt het project op de vorming van nieuw talent door te voorzien in zowel doctoraatstrajecten rond relevante sociale uitdagingen als het opleiden van postdocs en techniekers om uitdagingen rond de circulaire economie aan te gaan. Het copromotorschap van doctoraatstudenten zal ook de samenwerking tussen de regio’s vergemakkelijken en zal het perspectief van het jonge talent verbreden. De lokale productie van chemicaliën en duurzame luchtvaartbrandstoffen uitgaande van organisch afval zal de regio’s ook meer onafhankelijk maken van de import van primaire fossiele grondstoffen en creëert lokale economische activiteit en groei in de circulaire economie, en draagt zo dus bij tot duurzame jobs.
