Project acronym: SOIL:OurInvisibleAlly

Project start date: 2024-09-01
Project end date: 2027-08-31
Project status: ongoing
Relevant linked projects:
- Links4Soils (L4S) (EN) | L4S laid the foundation for an Alpine wide network of knowledge about soil through provision of general tools.. The consortium with strong PP in spat.planning & direct networks on implem. level will expand:
- - Local anchoring & boosting of implementation of AlpSP Network
- - Applicable SSM approaches at loc./reg. level incl .spat. planning
- - Expanding & upgrading http://Alpinesoils.eu (data, products), e.g. with SOILoutcomes
- - Soil culture & capacity-building (WP3)
- - Cooperation with AC-SWG(A32) (EN), LIFE Future Forest (FF) (EN) | LIFE Future Forest (2020-2023) focuses on the sustainability of forests & soils including the valorization of the achieved ecosystem services in the county of Landsberg am Lech (DE). SOIL will integrate the project area as pilot site showing & further elaborating the demonstration of sustainable forest management that builds on “living soils”. The handbook developed in Future Forest, giving orientation to municipalities replicating the approach, will further guide this process. (EN), Biodiv'Connect (EN) | The project acquires methodological & strategic tools, shared on a cross-border scale, to preserve & strengthen ecological continuity in the western Alps, in order to integrate the public policies & planning tools . The synergy will be used to underline the role of living soil in enhancing biodiversity & their tools integrated in the SOIL guidelines. (EN), OpenSpaceAlps (OSA) (EN) | OSA (2019-2022) created a platform for the exchange of knowledge & planners from different disciplines (AlpPlan network). The “Alpine Open Spaces Planning Handbook” gives strategic recommendations for open space protection. The results of OSA will serve as a basis for spatial planning & to the multisectoral approach of SOIL. A strong linkage between the AlpSP & the AlpPlan network will be forged during SOIL to better link land use sectors with spatial planning. (EN), GreenRisk4ALPs (GR4A) (EN) | GR4A facilitates risk-based protective forest management as ecosystem-based natural hazard risk management in the Alps. Its main outputs will be implemented for providing protective forest territorial diagnosis within SOIL. FLOW-PY model & economical evaluation tool will be applied for protective forest diagnoses in project´s pilot areas. Protective forests management guidelines will be used as a basis for providing elements to build integrated & adaptive management of soils ecosystems services. (EN), Impuls4Action (I4A) (EN) | The ARPAF financed project I4A initiated measures to support sustainable development by providing appropriate instruments, raising awareness & finding new models for sustainable soil protection in the Alps on the topics water management, inner development & peatlands. The integrative activities & tailor-made instruments for soil protection will be used for improved actions in pilot sites towards CCA. (EN), Horizon Soil Mission Support (SMS) (EN) | SMS (2020-2022) is producing an EU research & innovation roadmap for sustainable soil & land management to support the objectives of the Horizon Europe Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe” (EU Green Deal). The project also focuses on the analysis of needs & gaps to identify living labs for demonstration & engaging stakeholders from various fields. The project's aim goes hand in hand with SOIL.
- This synergy will be used to further elaborate transnational strategies for local implementation. (EN), Horizon EU-H2020 Land Support (EN) | Land Support (2018-2022) developed a web-based completely free, open-access GeoSpatial Decision Support System (S-DSS) devoted to:
- - support sustainable agriculture & forestry;
- - evaluate trade-off between land uses;
- - contribute to the development & implementation of land use policies in Europe. (EN)

Contribution to wider strategies and policies:
- EUStrategyAlpineRegion SOIL results contribute to the specific objective of EUSALP AG6 & are linked to AG 2/7/8. The workplan & feedback of AC-SWG, AG6 & 7 is integrated in the AF & active exchange will take place during the project, e.g. via discussion rounds, joint activities with AC-SWG new mandate (A32). Their networks will act as multipliers for the SOIL outputs even beyond the project. Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention, AG6: Active Observer of SOIL
- EuropeanGreenDeal SOIL contributes significantly to the GD, as the GD aggregates all sectors, governance levels, & sources of investments into defined goals for a climate adaptive & resource-sensitive continent. It is exactly this cross-sectoral approach that is consequently pushed for SSM. SOIL clearly operationalises the new soil strategy - as a key-deliverable of the Deal - for restored, resilient, & adequately protected soils by 2050 by implementation & capacity building.
- TerritorialAgenda2030 It relates to soil from many different thematic, CCA-related perspectives targeted by SOIL, e.g:(54)Ecosystems are fundamental to human existence & nature-based solutions needed to preserve their functions (37)Ecosystem quality: availability of high quality soil in all places in order to avoid social inequalities (57)SSM as part of the economic approach to circularity (7)Importance of strateg. spat. planning & calls for strengthening the territor. dimension of sector policies at all gov. levels
- Other EU Soil monitoring and resilience directive:
- The EU is proposing a new EU directive to protect & restore soils & ensure that they are used sustainably. Furthermore, this upcoming legislation especially targets the restoring/maintenance of sufficient organic matter to keep soils “alive”. SOIL is anchoring the importance of healthy, living soils via its 3 WPs, thus directly supporting the directive. When published, concrete actions will be included into the workplan.
- Other AC Soil Protection Working Group:
- Close cooperation: SOIL-PP is FR representative in the AC-SPWG. Other PP have contributed to the AC-SPWG Long Term Action Plan. SOIL will implement AC-SWG specific measures & feed its results directly into the work of the AC through physical/virtual sessions, written contributions & country specific advice. SWG will actively participate in SOIL: close exchange of information, participation of SWG representatives in SOIL calls. Joint A23, meetings & events.
- Other AC Climate Action Plan 2.0:
- AC decided on the Climate Action Plan & in this document, soil is referred to as“Alpine soils face multiple challenges from CC & require a common framework for preserving soil quality & quantity.” This exactly matches the approach of SOIL. For the Alpine convention, SOIL will be able to deliver a common framework for SSM in the territories considering spatial planning as cross-cutting point for other sectoral activities.
- Other EU Soil Strategy for 2030 title “Reaping the benefits of healthy soils for people, food, nature & climate”: SOIL very well contributes to the various objectives of the strategy (limiting soil threats/degradation: sealing, erosion, carbon depletion, biodiversity loss) by replicable implementation. Apart from that, the strategy clearly defines healthy soil. SOIL goes one step further & defines “living soil”. SOIL will deliver substantial progress for the implem. of the Strategy in the Alps.
- Other The European Soil Partnership (ESP) (with national SP) is a collaborative initiative grouping multiple natl. & intl. institutions & stakeholders addressing soil-related challenges. SOIL will contribute to its aims by fostering SSM, the AlpSP, and its network. A periodic contact with the ESP is planned to improve the mutual exchange of information, harmonise SOIL activities and disseminate the results via the ESP / FAO websites and the annual ESP Plenary meeting.
- Other The EU Mission Soil targets enhancing soil health in Europe through SSM, combating soil & land degradation, and preserving biodiversity. It seeks to raise awareness, innovate & foster collaboration among stakeholders to safeguard soil. It welcomes SOIL & active exchange as it contributing to its aims within the mission's framework. SOIL outcomes will be integrated in the mission's knowledge hub and some of SOIL's case studies possibly embedded into its map of living labs & lighthouses (Prepsoil)
