The Bauhaus Goes North (BGN) project aims to review the state of the art in respect to participatory, sustainable, and inclusive co-design for the transition to a circular and resource efficient economy in the NPA Region. Under the New European Bauhaus (NEB) it removes barriers to accelerate replication of best practice across the NPA Region. BGN will be delivered via a Living Lab initiative to co-create a Co-Design Playbook; a Replicability Index tool and Annual Best Practice Call to accelerate take-up of replicable solutions. Contributing to the NEB movement, it proposes and advances participatory, sustainable and inclusive co-design best practices. Four jointly-develped demonstrator projects - a district plan, a campus and a historic building, a sustainable island development - will illustrate and anchor diverse settings and contexts. The Partners and Associates are strategic agencies in 7 regions representing Local Authorities, Academic and Environmental Groups and Social NGO's.

Expected Achievements (EN):

WP1 will be led by UCC’s Community Engagement Office. It will apply Living Lab methods as the principle mechanism for co-designing, developing, and co-creating a baseline of NEB principles, tools and measures in response to the core challenges. WP1 will include an initial Scoping and Identification of the experience of the NEB in the NPA region. Applying living lab methods, it will bring together international best practice, thought leadership and transdisciplinary expertise from across the Quadruple Helix of societal actors in the partners regions to identify cutting-edge best practice and formative principles. It will co-create a 'Co-Design Playbook' that can inform replicability, considering local contexts, competencies, capacity building and policy for supporting the transition to circular and resource efficient economies. An Annual Best Practice Call + Camp (GBCI) will support mutual learning and accelerate replicable best practices at local, national, Nordic, and EU levels.. The objective of WP2 will be the Identification and bench-marking of current Best Practices and Projects that exemplify NEB principles in the NPA region through a competition composed of a yearly call over three years and judged by an Expert Panel selected from all the Partner countries. The WP will be led by the Green Building Council Iceland, which already has an extensive network and media presence. Local Partners will nominate Experts to the Panel. The yearly call will be widely circulated using all Partners networks. Each Call is expected to produce a short list of around 10 Best Practices each year, from which three winners will be selected. The winners will be publicly declared 'Best Practices' for that year, and details of their projects and contact information provided will be highlighted on the Project Website for the duration of the Project and 5 years afterwards. The Competition will provide an opportunity to review the state of the art as well as networking opportunities. 4 Demonstrator projects will be implemented that demonstrate the application of NEB principles and approaches - especially focusing on 'circularity' principles (circular economy and resource efficiency). Demonstrators will include both urban and rural based projects, planning and development including Urban Campus regeneration and Rural sustainable models of construction. Specifically, they include; (1) Sustainable renovation of a mid-Modern building on UCC Campus (Cork, Ireland) and a parallel timber frame campus Demonstrator in Torshaven, and support from Landsverk (Faroes). (2) Renovation, reuse and repurposing of a dairy farm in Temmes, Tyrnava, (Finland) & CECAS Myross Wood House (Cork, Ireland) (3) Development of a sustainable Masterplan of a new district in the City of Bodo (Norway) and BLOXhub (Copenhagen, Denmark) (4) Sustainable solutions in the island Holmön (Sweden), and model for sustainable development in Cape Clear Island by Cork County Council (Ireland)

NEES (Natural Energy Efficiency and Sustainability) Project (1993-1996), in which the University of Umea was also a Partner that demonstrated the use of natural materials and processes in construction and renovations (EN) | This project was led by UCC (CCAE) and reviewed the greening of the construction industry, through the identification and promotion of renewable and recycled construction materials, as well as the use of nature-like approaches to design. (EN), E-Lighthouse Project (2017-2020) demonstrated how to maximize energy retrofitting of homes and recycling.. Principles for the Norther Periphery and Arctic
Region. (EN) | Led by UCC, this Preparatory project focused on the identification and review of critical Best Practices of the NEB approach in the NPA Region. It examined where these Best Practices were integrated - thus achieving synergies. Working with the same Partners as the current proposal, this project proposed to use key NEB principles ‘Make, Live, Assemble‘ framework, and the wider idea of circularity (Buildings, Society; Economy, Energy, Material, Techniques & Processes, Programme, Design).
(EN), HYBES "Hybrid energy solutions for buildings and infrastructure" (2023-2026) (EN) | HYBES is developing new methods to make buildings more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The project partnership comprises institutions from Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Ireland. HYBES will develop energy solutions that contribute to buildings producing as much energy as they consume. HYBES is dedicating an entire work package to raising the awareness of citizens, municipalities, energy producers and businesses. (EN)

EUStrategyBalticSeaRegion BGN will provide a common European approach to integrated sustainable development that is not only environmental and technical but also takes into account the cultural and historical characteristics of each region, in particular, the impact of climate change and the need for the greening of economies and of industry is a major component of this approach. The Project will facilitate stronger connections within different parts of the region, thereby meeting the objectives of the Strategy.
SeaBasinStrategyArcticOcean BGN will provide a common European approach to integrated sustainable development, including the impact of climate change and the need for the greening of economies and industries. In this way, the Project aligns with the Joint Communiation because Climate Change is recognised there as a major threat to the Arctic, and the EU's role in fighting it is highlighted.
AtlanticStrategy The Action Plan aims to contribute to the European Green Deal, including a socially inclusive model of sustainable development. TerritorialAgenda2030 One of the overarching objectives of the Agenda is a Green Europe, which includes, among others, ecological livelihoods, climate-neutral towns, cities and regions, and circular economy. These aspects are the pillars of the NEB approach and, therefore, will also be the pillars of the common approach to integrated sustainable development the Project aims to provide.
Other BGN aligns with the Circular Economy Action Plan by providing examples and practices of circular economy in construction and development, and the European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage, providing examples of renovation, reuse, and repurposing of historic buildings.
