Summary
Project acronym: NATURED
Project ID: IPA-ADRION00445
Project start date: 2024-07-01
Project end date: 2026-12-31
Project status: ongoing
Relevant linked projects:
- Urban Heat Islands (UHI) – Interreg Central Europe (EN) | The UHI project aims to analyse the phenomenon of "urban heat islands" to define policies and initiate transnational initiatives for the prevention, adaptation and mitigation of the risks associated with temperature increases in population centres. This will also be implemented by tracing appropriate models for the transformation of urban areas and proposing suitable regulatory and design measures, to be included in the territorial and urban planning tools that can contribute as best practices of procedural experiences, pilot actions and plans implemented for the action plans of resilience, and consequent pilot actions for the experimentation of solutions, to be developed in NATURED. CORILA, partner in UHI, will ensure the expected synergy. (EN), STREAM - Strategic development of flood management (Interreg Italy - Croatia). (EN) | This project is focused on the development of local tools to cope with coastal and urban flooding. The focus of STREAM is on the forecasting and early warning component; therefore, it is in synergy with the aims of NATURED without having conflicts or overlap. NATURED can capitalise on the experiences, results, and approaches of these tools to increase the resilience of urban areas to effects of climate change. (EN), ADRIACLIM - Climate change information, monitoring and management tools for adaptation strategies in Adriatic coastal areas (Interreg Italy - Croatia). (EN) | Due to the coastal territorial focus of the project, its results on information, monitoring, and management tools to support adaptation strategies in coastal areas of the Adriatic are useful for the activities to be implemented in Split. (EN), SECAP - (Interreg Italy - Slovenia). (EN) | SECAP has a strong cross-border component to support adaptation planning. On the one hand, the approaches used, and the results obtained from the analyses for the cross-border knowledge frameworks can work in synergy with the status quo WP, although applied to different territories. On the other hand, the coordinated adaptation strategies and their implementation in local Sustainable Energy and Adaptation Plans can contribute as best practice of procedural experiences, pilot actions and implemented plans for the resilience actions plans, and consequent pilot actions for testing solutions, to develop in NATURED (EN)

Deliverables:
- Program of transnational/ local training seminars to understand interactions climate/city.
- c. 99
- Transnational technical assessment report
- Narrative report on the complex interactions between climate and cities
- A set of vulnerability/hazard matrixes at the city level on the effects of climate change
- Joint developed strategy for resilience of cities
- Transnational technical qualitative assessment
- Report resuming the citizens/stakeholders’ opinions and contributions.
- Joint action plan on implementable NbS
- Transnational technical qualitative assessment report
- Review of the public works plans to prioritize NbS
- One package of 11 pilot actions to test NbS solutions of resilience to climate change in cities.
- Replicability plan at wider scale of the successful tested joint solutions
Contribution to wider strategies and policies:
- EuropeanGreenDeal Scientists have clarified that even if emissions of GHG were stopped, their concentration in atmosphere is so high that their impacts would last for a long time. Thus, making urban areas more resilient to climate change and its catastrophic effects is a key component of EU Green Deal (as stated by new EU Adaptation Strategy of February 2021), to which NATURED will contribute through data collection, a vulnerability matrix, a portfolio of implementable solutions to be tested in pilot actions.
- c. 497
- EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion
- Even if climate change (mitigation/adaptation) is not mentioned in the strategy as a specific pillar or goal, the EUSAIR acknowledges that the Region is under threat from climate change as flooding, drought, soil erosion, and forest fires are all increasing realities. By working to make more resilient to climate change in urban areas (flooding, heatwaves), NATURED will contribute to the Pillar 3„Environmental quality“ of EUSAIR, which overall goal is the preservation of natural ecosystems.
- Other TERRITORIAL AGENDA 2030: IT points out that the impacts of climate change vary considerably across European geographical regions with different degrees of vulnerability. The increased risks of sea-level rise, heat waves, forest fires, drought, desertification, soil degradation, floods, and other natural and mixed natural and technical hazards call for place-based responses, cooperation, and coordinated policies, that require tailor-made responses at all levels. NATURED is wholly designed on these assumptions.
- Other
- EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR): One of the goals of Danube Strategy is to provide a timely opportunity to put in place the required elements on which to build a Danube Adaptation Strategy in nearest possible future, underling that is essential a full cross-cutting, integrated approach to climate change. NATURED, through the vulnerability matrix, pilot actions by which some solutions will be tested, with an overall place-based approach founded on NBS-Nature-Based Solutions, will contribute to the strategic goal above.
- Other EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP): the region is particularly vulnerable to climate change. In 20th century, temperature increased by almost 2°C, against around 1°C in nearby regions. Small glaciers are likely to disappear, while larger glaciers will suffer a e reduction of between 30 % and 70 % by 2050. In 2018, the Italian side of region has been affected by catastrophic tempest Vaia, whilst climate instability is increasing with anormal heat waves. Through its own NBS approach, NATURED will provide useful inputs to EUSALP.
