- European Climate Pact (EN) | The awareness campaign aiming at increasing the community awareness about security measures during flooding events and about NBS which will be carried out within ARIANNA Project, as well as the Open Living Labs, will be implemented in synergy with the purposes of the European Climate Pact. In fact this EU initiative, as part of European Green Deal, focuses on public engagement on climate action, encouraging information sharing, inspiration, and fostering public understanding of the threat and the challenge of climate change and environmental degradation and on how to counter it by using multiple channels and tools including events in Member States, on the model of the Commission’s on-going citizens’ dialogues. ARIANNA Project will be particularly linked to the priority topic “Green areas”moving from the assumption that in order to build resilience against climate threats as well as to our health, more green areas are needed. Considering its purpose to build a climate-friendly society, the Project will be also aligned to the Climate Pact priority topic “Education and Awareness”, contributing to spreading knowledge scientifically sound, helping to translate science into options for everyday action. (EN), Climate Adaptation Platform and European Climate and Health Observator (EN) | ARIANNA Project will build synergies with the EU Climate Adaptation Platform, the EU platform for adaptation knowledge launched in 2012, and also with the European Climate and Health Observatory, joint initiative launched by the European Commission, in synergy with the European Environment Agency and many other organizations, to better understand, anticipate and minimize the health threats caused by climate change.

Contribution to wider strategies and policies:
- EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion Considering that the ARIANNA Project ambition is to improve the climate resilience of territories and communities involved, it clearly contributes to the EUSAIR Strategy; in view of the actions the project implies, addressing environmental issues, ARIANNA is in line with EUSAIR Pillar 3, “Environmental quality”, aiming at ensuring good environmental and ecological status of the marine and coastal environment in line with the relevant EU acquis and the ecosystem approach of the Barcelona Convention, and also with the goal of the EU biodiversity strategy of halting the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of ecosystem services in the EU. Within this pillar, ARIANNA falls within both Topic 1. Marine environment, and 2. Transnational terrestrial habitats and biodiversity. Definitely, both ARIANNA Project and Pillar 3 (as outlined in EUSAIR Action Plan SWD(2020) 57 final) contribute to bolstering the resilience of the macro-region's economies and societies in the face of existing and/or potential impacts of climate change, and also share the cross-cutting issues “Capacity building and communication” and “Research and Innovation”.
- Considering that the achievement of a better climate resilience in the area has positive impacts on issues related to the blue growth, it also contributes to specific objectives of Pillar 1 aiming at driving innovative maritime and marine growth in the Region by promoting sustainable economic growth and jobs as well as business opportunities in the blue economy sectors. In view of the negative consequences that climate disasters determine on transport networks, ARIANNA Project results also contribute to the improvement of connectivity in the Region, as foreseen within the objectives of EUSAIR Pillar 2 Connecting the Region. Referring to Pillar 4 Sustainable Tourism it is clear that improving climate resilience can positively impact on the achievement of this Pillar’s goals, especially in terms of the quality of tourism offered
- EuropeanGreenDeal ARIANNA Project fits into the European Green Deal Strategy, contributing to its purpose to “protect, conserve and enhance the EU's natural capital, and protect the health and well-being of citizens from environment-related risks and impacts”, as outlined in the Strategy introduction. Considering ARIANNA focus on NBS, it is in line with European Commission ambition, set in the Green Deal Communication, to improve sustainable solutions and disruptive innovation, critical to achieve the objectives of this strategy on the assumption that “conventional solutions are not sufficient”. The Toolkit and the joint developed TN Strategy focused on NBS and climate resilience, which will be implemented within ARIANNA Project, are perfectly consistent with this specific aspect of the European Green Deal aiming at making the EU climate resilient by 2050.
- Moreover, ARIANNA Project output represented by the Open Living Labs focused on climate awareness improvement and NBS, moreover, contribute to the objective of engagement of communities on the changes needed for a successful green transition, outlined in the Green Deal Strategy too. It is also in line with the intention, outlined within the zero pollution ambition for a toxic-free environment, to restore the natural functions of ground and surface water, essential to preserve and restore biodiversity in lakes, rivers, wetlands and estuaries, and to prevent and limit damage from floods.
- Other Forcing a climate resilient Europe-The new EU Strategy on adaptation to climate change, COM(2021) 82 final
- The objectives of ARIANNA Project are fully in line with the EU adaptation Strategy, which outlines the path for the European Union to adapt to the unavoidable impacts of climate change and become climate resilient by 2050. The Strategy has four principal objectives: to make adaptation smarter, swifter and more systemic, and to step up international action on adaptation to climate change. ARIANNA Project can particularly contribute to the strategy objective of adaptation actions informed by robust data and risk assessment tools that are available to all – from families building homes, businesses in coastal regions and farmers planning their crops.
- With reference to the objective of a more systemic adaptation, moreover, ARIANNA project is not only in line with European Commission ambitions, but it is just grounded in one of the identified cross-cutting priorities: the nature based solutions for adaptation. The project proposal can contribute to the implementation of NBS on a larger scale, increasing climate resilience and contributing to multiple Green Deal objectives. As clarified by this Strategy ARIANNA partnership believes that “blue-green infrastructures are multipurpose, “no regret” solutions and simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build climate resilience” (...) and aims at contributing to better “quantify their benefits, and to better communicate them to decision-makers and practitioners at all levels to improve take-up”.
- Other Enhancing the accession process-A credible EU perspective for the Western Balkans COM (2020) 57final
- ARIANNA Project, thanks to the strong cooperation among project partner countries which will characterize every step of the project, nevertheless its follow-up expressed by the CB network focused on NBS, definitely supports the accession process and the perspective of the Western Balkans expressed by EU and its Member States since the Feira and Thessaloniki Summits in 2000 and 2003. It particularly fits into the cluster of negotiating chapters “Green agenda and sustainable connectivity”, namely n. 27 Environment and climate change, contributing to fostering political dialogue in these fields in view of the accession process to the EU.
- Other European Climate Law
- The Project proposal is in line with and contributes to the Regulation (EU) 2021/1119 of 30 June 2021 establishing the framework for achieving climate neutrality, with particular reference to the statement enshrined in art. 5, dedicated to the adaptation to climate change, according to which Member States shall ensure continuous progress in enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change in accordance with Article 7 of the Paris Agreement (...) They shall focus, in particular, on the most vulnerable and impacted populations and sectors, and identify shortcomings in this regard in consultation with civil society.
- Other Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 Bringing nature back into our lives COM(2020) 380 final
- ARIANNA Project contributes to this Strategy, adopted in the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic: they both move from the assumption that ecosystems mitigate natural disasters, pests and diseases and help regulate the climate, and therefore put in place actions aiming at preserving it. It contributes to the development and implementation of NBS, as advocated and proposed in Biodiversity Strategy, which stresses how the biodiversity crisis and the climate crisis are intrinsically linked, because climate change accelerates the destruction of the natural world through events such as flooding. The project proposal is in line with the assumption that, in view of this crisis, nature is a vital ally in the fight against climate change, and therefore NBS, which are the core of the project itself, will be essential for emission reduction and climate adaptation.
- It is particularly consistent with the strategy’s ambition of creating green European cities, increasing biodiversity in urban spaces and drafting a nature restoration plan, also thanks to the EU Urban Greening Platform, under a new ‘Green City Accord’ with cities and mayors, in close coordination with the European Covenant of Mayors.
- Other New EU Forest Strategy for 2030 COM(2021) 572 final
- This Strategy, rooted in the European Green Deal and in the EU Biodiversity Strategy includes the “3 Billion Trees Pledge”, commitment enriched by a roadmap, aiming at increasing the area of forest and tree coverage in the EU, as well as the the resilience of forests and their role in reversing biodiversity loss, and mitigating and helping communities adapt to climate change.
- ARIANNA Project, in particular its focus on the NBS represented by tree planting, will fully contribute to this Strategy, on the base of the same guiding principle: plant and grow the right tree in the right place, for the right purpose, so that to ensure that planting is carried out in a way that produces a tangible and positive impact on the climate, the environment, the economy and the quality of life of EU citizens.
- Other A/RES/70/1 - Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
- ARIANNA aiming at enhancing climate resilience, indirectly impacts on all the goals of Agenda, in particular Goal 13, dedicated to the urgent actions to combat climate change and its impacts, and related targets such as:
- 13.1 Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries;
- 13.2 Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning;
- 13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
- The consistency of the project proposal is also clear with reference to GOAL 11 “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”, especially for the following targets:
- 11.4 Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage;
- 11.5 By 2030, significantly reduce the number of deaths and the number of people affected and substantially decrease the direct economic losses relative to global gross domestic product caused by disasters, including water-related disasters, with a focus on protecting the poor and people in vulnerable situations;
- 11.b By 2020, substantially increase the number of cities and human settlements adopting and implementing integrated policies and plans towards inclusion, resource efficiency, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, resilience to disasters, and develop and implement, in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, holistic disaster risk management at all levels.
- Referring to Goal 12 ARIANNA Project, considering the foreseen activities of dissemination and awareness campaigns about the Toolkit and NBS, specifically contribute to target 12.8: by 2030, ensuring that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature.
